Illinois Democrats Set to OK New Legislative Maps Over Criticism
Illinois Democrats convening a special session to redraw legislative maps they drew back in May. Now they're incorporating US Census data provided in August. The hope is to head off legal challenges by Republicans Capital Bureau chief Mark Maxwell in Springfield. This latest move is the most glaring evidence yet. The Democrats muscled the first map through just to meet that deadline, and now they're muscling a second real map through if you will to cover their tracks and button up the parts of that first map that could have been shot down in the courts. Republicans argue it's after June 30th that constitutional deadline and by still drawing these maps, it means it should go to a bipartisan commission. Republicans filed federal lawsuits over the first maps.
