Watchdog says Secret Service deleted Jan. 6 text messages


A government watchdog has found Secret Service agents deleted text messages sent and received around the January 6th attack on the U.S. capitol I'm Ben Thomas with details In a letter obtained by The Associated Press the Department of Homeland Security office of inspector general says the messages between January 5th and January 6th 2021 were erased as part of a device replacement program The erasure came after the watchdog office requested records of electronic communications between the agents as part of its probe into events surrounding the January 6th attack Additionally the letters sent to leaders of the House and Senate Homeland Security committees says Homeland Security personnel were told they couldn't provide records to the inspector general and any such records would first have to be reviewed by DHS attorneys A Secret Service spokesman called the claims categorically false Ben Thomas Washington
