"And joining us on the care of the news line CBS news automotive expert Jeff Gilbert based in Detroit and Jeff the trump administration going after some automakers what's happening what what her brother these for car makers Ford BMW Volkswagen Honda cut their own separate fuel economy deal with California before the president announced the new fuel economy standards of so called rolled back well for came out today that the justice department is investing investigating that to see a four car makers working together on fuel economy is that some sort of collusion so are they violating antitrust rules so this is just the beginning of an investigation the car makers say they'll cooperate and it's interesting because this comes obviously at a time when the trump administration is at odds with the state of California over the auto emissions in mileage standards and other things so where are we on this in terms of who decides what the mileage is going to be well you know it's probably gonna be like everything else in this country will probably be decided in the courts somewhere but the trump administration is still working on the wall back to the car makers initially requested the but they kind of back to Oakland California threatened to sue and they have the right to set their own standards now the trump administration is expected to announce in the next month or so that they want to take that waiver away from California in California says if you do that will soon so again it's likely to end up in the courts the carmaker stop by making this deal with California they were going to stay out of trouble currently that's not possible these days yeah it's interesting with the trump administration seemingly intent on Kirby move the California power on the mileage issue an emissions issues and such things it brings up. a question about that auto makers not wanting to have to deal with two different standards and it just makes it more costly for them. exactly and I think the car makers would like a little bit of relief but they they have set for the record they don't want that if it means we're gonna have to be brought multiple standards or if the whole situation is going to be boiled over in the courts for a number of years and they have uncertainty because they've got a plan for these products that that are going forward and they need to know what kind of fuel economy these products have to me Jeff thank you very much CBS news automotive expert Jeff Gilbert joining us from Detroit on the K. are all the news line and again the justice department has launched an antitrust investigation looking at the BMW Honda Ford and Volkswagen the see if they got together on this California emissions a standard to"
