Listen: Michael, Andrew Torres And Fraud discussed on Opening Arguments
"Smith that over there is Andrew Torres. Hey, happy tax day, Andrew. Yeah. Happy new baby. Yeah. Maybe we'll see. I don't think this thing's ever coming out. We're recording ahead of time. So maybe I do. I hope everyone joy doing their taxes. I did mine like say Levin, twelve months ago. So I I've been done for a while. Yeah. I took care of that back in the eighties. It was great. Of course, ripping off a Simpson's joke where it's like, oh, I did that. Elmer that was last year tax. You have to every. Good times. All right. We have a tax themed episode, and I promise it'll be a little more fun than that's marginally more fun than that sounds at mecca. The show's new tagline opening to show, that's marginally more fun. It sounds. Why is boring as the might suggest for by the title happy tax day? All right. We've got to talk of Nadi our old friend. I'm sure he'll be on the show any day now from prison. I don't know. We'll find out and we're gonna talk about the IRS. And I also I can't wait to talk about the Trump tax return stuff. Because I am worried. I have this fear that somehow the lodges won't apply. You know, it's going to be it's going to be a clear as Kushner story because the house committee is requested Trump's tax returns. And then it's it sounds like they're just going to be like, nah, we're not gonna do it or something, and I'm very worried. So I can't wait to hear Andrew break that down for us. What's going? Happen there. What should happen all that? Good stuff. So tons of heavy tax day to you all tax related episode. Here we go. Let's talk Michael anonymous. Naughty. Not. Deign states. He'll. All right. Yeah. As we were recording on Thursday. The news broke that Michael Vanni was indicted on thirty six counts in federal court. This was a grand jury presented to the US district court for the central district of California. This is not the extortion against Nike stuff, that's an entirely separate proceeding. These are twenty nine counts of tax fraud. Several four counts related to the of the Egan of Nadi bankruptcy that we talked about in episode one eighty one and a couple of counts of Bank fraud. Right. And so let's talk about the the new stuff, right? The old stuff. I right. There are four counts that begin. It is counts thirty three through thirty six that relate to materially false, declarations and statements made under penalty of perjury in connection with the Egan of Noni, bankruptcy. Some of these we knew already some of them. We did not know. So for example, in connection with the bankruptcy Michael ovens failed to disclose settlements that his firm received and were therefore assets of the bankrupt law for right? Why he refused to disclose? Those are is going to become very very clear when we talk about the twenty nine tax fraud clemes, and again, let's also be clear this I like being clear that this is an indictment, right? This is a charging document, Michael. Avenue is innocent until proven guilty and will have the opportunity to contest these allegations in a court of law that should be made clear, right. This is what a grand jury has found that there is sufficient evidence to charge. Michael avocado with these thirty six crimes, and as a callback to our to our Friday episode where we pointed out that the grand jury returned a single indictment one count against Julian Assange, this is a more typical kind of indictment, particularly in a white collar case, right? Like, this looks a lot like the indictment that was handed down against Paul Manafort, for example, where when you are conducting financial crimes, you can charge somebody with conspiracy"
