Listen: Joe Flacco, Broncos And Denver Broncos discussed on Drive Time Sports
"Joe flacco day edition of drive time sports. I'm Ryan wheels is alongside the happy that you are long side as well if you'd like to get your thoughts out, and I promise you we're going to get to the text line. We've had multiple guests in our number one and everything like that. We will get to your thoughts. So keep them coming to eight six zero zero four six grant Mitch will give his thoughts on all of this coming up in the next segment crunch time bomb of the hour. I you know, how it go. Obviously that is the big story today. We touched is Ahah Thomas. We'll talk about him a little bit later on in the show as well. But the big news of the day, Adam Schefter reporting that the Broncos have agreed to acquire. Joe flacco the return will be amid round pick probably third and onward and upward we go. They have an extra fourth from the PT trade. Yes. So did they do? Yeah. So yet another tentacle to this story. Joe flacco for Thomas. Good trade. Mark. Look, there's no team certainly in Colorado. In the west. East of LA in west of New York that does a better job of constantly staying in the consciousness of the fan base. Then the Broncos. It only I was talking with Nick Rotschild. We're both at the switch backs event today. They unveiled their away jerseys very sharp looking by the way. We're talking. It's almost like the nuggets they knew the nuggets were coming out with Isaiah Thomas returning. A lot of people were interested people may be talking about Isaiah Thomas on the radio today. Kind of put the Broncos to the back burner. And the Broncos say, no, we refuse. Maybe that's why why now like we asked this with the Kyla Murray announcement Why's he announcing it when he did why are the Broncos leaking that they acquire Joe flacco. Now is it because they can't stand for any other team in Colorado to be happy or to be talked about. I'd say it's as good a reason as any. But that being said. I have to address something that I saw Ryan Harris who I like a lot. He appears with grant Mitch from time to time on channel five obviously was a part of a Bronco Super Bowl team. I he I saw a tweet from him earlier. And I just in case you side. Or in case you were entertaining. These kind of same thoughts allow me to pre your mind at ease. Ryan Harris said Joe flacco move is brilliant. He has no guaranteed money. You can see what he has and release them before the season. If he's got nothing left in the tank you create competition at the quarterback position. And you just got a former Super Bowl MVP for nothing. John Elway does not make this move to kick the tires on. Joe flacco John Elway is a lot of things stupid is not one of them. He knows that acquiring. Joe flacco will set dove valley on fire. And create just absolute chaos, but just like he knows how people are going to react in the locker room outside the locker room on social media in the media. He knows what he's knows what he's doing. When he gets Joe flacco. This is not this is not hey, we're gonna take a chance and kick the tires. No. They're bringing in Joe flacco to be the starting quarterback of the Denver Broncos in two thousand nineteen. I get that. He, you know, financially. You could. Economy. That's that's all well and good. I'm not saying there, those aren't facts. That ain't what John Elway's bringing them into do. John elway. And the Broncos didn't do as much due diligence as as has been reported by Jeff leg while than others. To bring him in to you know, maybe he works out. Maybe he doesn't know Joe flacco better workout because John Elway went and got him when he already had a quarterback on the roster. Well to kind of defend Ryan Harrison, his his take there. Joe flacco has been out injured since November. So you don't know what what you're getting exactly. Because is he going to be able to play L is he healthy? He was healthy enough to play in the chargers ravens playoff game. That's true. Get your point. Yeah, again, and it was either this trade for him now or wait and see if the ravens released him later and. That was the talk and have to sign him to a contract that would include guaranteed money. And again, what Ryan Harris is saying are facts, these are all facts, no, guaranteed money. So you could cut him for nothing. You could. I it does create a competition. If you decide that's where I deviate case. Keenum is not on the Denver Broncos and training camp. No, I think that's the other thing. Because like if they go into the draft and say somehow, they get Daniel Jones or or even more. So let's say somehow, they get drew lock like, you know, late first or second. Then drew lock comes in training camp. And he's like so much better than flacco. They say, yeah, we're gonna go drew lock. So. Flaco? That's the one thing. And then he got care Grayson is your backup that I am the one thing that I am. Wondering about and I don't know that I have the answer today. Does this make the Broncos more or less likely to take a quarterback at ten less? That's where I'm leaning. But not unlikely that they take a quarterback at all. True. Especially of these this crop, right? That's out there. But yes, I think now with ten they can focus on like David said best player available that feels the need. Right. Got to put that part in print. Everybody forgets that part, right? Best players sales. Just the best player on that fills a need. Right. So greedy would be a great option. If he's available. We'll have greedy. Is it because primarily because of his name? Could be I don't care. Don't judge. Don't you wanna defender that's named greedy? Exactly. Right. And so I don't this is not while the Broncos could cut bait with Joe flacco at any point before the season, given a giving up anything. Anyway, if you're giving up amid Brown pick that you got your not even your own. If you're the one that you got for DT, then you're really not giving up anything. I don't think. Yeah. I don't think anyone's so by by August, fright slate clean here. Yeah. I think there's I don't think anybody's saying while they pay too much for Joe flacco. I think. The question is could they really afford to keep both guys on the roster in into that. I say, no, no case keenum is going to be gone one way or another. They're going to hope to trade him. But if I'm another team if I'm the Jaguars or I'm. I mean who has young. Pick a the jets or a team with money or how about the colts? It was great that you had one year of Andrew lock. But what if he gets hurt you feel like you have a pretty good team? Well, two of the teams that are that they're talking about him going to Arizona because cliff Kingsbury was his coach Houston. Uh-huh. Coach and New York Giants because who's their headcount get that who's the head coach Pat Shurmur and who was the offensive coordinator in Minnesota venture. Exactly. That's why. But why people know in a? It sucks. But it brings up. My problem with this. Because if you're just joining a joining us, first of all, welcome hope your day has been spectacular. The bottom line with this deal. Is that the Broncos are better off at quarterback now than they were yesterday? That is the at the end of the day the bottom line they're better at quarterback. But there's all these other tentacles and ancillary things that make you not like the move as much namely that you there seems to be no succession plan forgetting, it'd be one thing if they acquired Joe flacco and in return, they're giving the ravens case keenum tobacco up. Lamar jackson. Great clean. Cool. Broncos. Got a better quarterback. They get case keenum out of there. It doesn't seem like the Broncos have that next part figured out yet they've welcomed in Joe flacco in the front door. They haven't pushed case keenum out the back door yet. So how do they do that without cutting him because can they afford to cut him? Sure, they would save eleven million dollars in cap space. But they'd eat ten. If they cut case keenum. So is that a possibility? Sure it is. But what I don't like about the move. Is that there's no corresponding move set up. And I think that's the biggest thing because I know. Everyone loves the idea of competition. The Broncos don't do quarterback competitions. Well, they just don't. So I really don't wanna hear the word competition being thrown out for flacco and keenum because we had to deal with that garbage for three years. I'm not doing it. Again. There's no quarterback competition. You brought in flacco. If you draft a quarterback, that's a different kind of competition. Right. It's a different kind of competition. It's do we play the young guy immediately. And risk. The upside is he hits the ground running like a Cam Newton and ends up being better off for long term. Or do. We discourage him too early. And then he becomes a bus because he gets to beat up early. But it's not really saying. It's not really a quarterback competition. The Broncos win it have a quarterback competition. Even if they took a quarterback at ten. Because all they need to do is just say Joe flacco our quarterback. And so and so's the backup. And we would understand that. Because not all teams subscribe to the idea of taking a quarter of playing a rookie quarterback immediately. So I want nothing to do with quarterback competitions. Joe flacco is the starting quarterback of the Denver Broncos case keenum, the next step is to figure out how you can maximize the return from case keenum now that you have. You know? Your there's no there's no mystery now people know that you have flacco, and they know you need to get rid of keenum. I was going to put that in really crass way. But I want to do that. They don't have that second part figured out. So NFL teams are not going to be lining up at John Elway's door trying to give up assets for case keenum. That's the part. I don't like about it. But again, I keep going back to it's like, and I know if I mentioned this person's name, I'm already going to split the audience in half. Here goes nothing. It's like President Obama used to say when he was trying to get reelected. Are you better off now than you were for years ago? The question with the Broncos are the Broncos better off today than they were yesterday. I think they are wheels is shrugging. And it's certainly up for debate. I can welcome at debate. I think that flacco is clearly a better quarterback, case keenum."
