Listen: Phillies, Kevin And Baseball discussed on Joe Giglio
"Cousin swings and hits one deep down the left towards the quarter looking up. I. Ellen cousins the opposite way. A five three lead in the top. Unbelievable. You know, much like a lot of the Phillies season last year. You can take away the good and ignore the bad the evening show likes to do that in that game. I believe the Phillies lost and a walk off home run by Jason Heyward. But the good there was two things. Cousins with a home run a lead for the Phillies and a fun call there by Kevin Franson who as we bring him on here. Introducing Kevin Franson who you heard from last year's police broadcast. You know, he's been part of our show from time to time as a guest. And now we saw the the news yesterday. Kevin getting the bump is going to be doing. I believe eighty one games next year for the Phillies along with Larry Anderson doing some color, but with Scott France, Casey, Kevin France from out in the bay area. First of all Catholic -gratulations at second. How you doing tonight? Number one. Thank you. Number two, fantastic. You know, his two hour drive to San Francisco from home. Kind of get an annoying right now. So yeah, I'm fired up a little ball the title Philly. There we go. All right before we get into the bills. I have to just I have to throw this out because it's it's it's a kind of a bitch, Jack, and I have, but I have to ask how much credit you give this show for for your boost with the Phillies because very early on Jack. And I were fans of yours thought you were doing a good job on the broadcast. And we kind of have a a thing where people come on our show, and then they become bigger star. So how much credit do we get for this? Are you get it? All okay. Cindy webster. So you know, that that's where it goes. You guys MO Jo potential talk for a long time, which with Millar and Chris rose Ritchie rose every time it had a guy on Homer, right? That that's exactly what it is. I'm going to take full credit then for you. And you should and I will. And so we'll do that. I'm excited as you will continue to do a good job in this business to say, it's all because of me Kevin Phillips big week coming up the winter meetings out in Las Vegas. And this could be one of the biggest weeks the Phillies have had so far. We'll get to that. But let's start with what happened so far in this off season. They've been active. What were you where are your thoughts on the gene, sicker trade? JP Crawford Carlos Santana to Seattle Phillies. Get back Jean cigar and a pair relief pitchers. What do you think? I wanted to make sure that no I don't want to be PC. I feel like the Phillies just stole everything on that one. Because you get gene girl who's. He's a hell of a ball player. You make your team instantaneously better. Obviously what what color Santana did in last year. Average wasn't good. But there's moments. I mean, you guys walked over one hundred times the guy still had some good production. But gene cigarette ads so much this team defensively he adds so much to the team offensively. Because there's a there's a fight. There's a grind at the play that he had he gets the two strikes. He doesn't just put the ball play ball hard. And and we've seen that when was with the D-Backs most recently, obviously with the Mariners they got better. A good opportunity for JD Crawford to to go to Seattle in play. I wouldn't sold on him. I see him for years. I wasn't sold. So I personally think it's a great deal win win. And you know, obviously shortstop being a position where you can't have enough shortstops. You can't have you have Scott scenery who the second base you can move over there. If they decided to do something where we are just makes sense. Everything makes sense, they got more athletic. They did. And they also got a guy Kevin in jeans cigar that over the last couple of years now as he become a really good hair and he hits over three hundred but he doesn't strike out. And and that's the one thing we saw last year and you saw during the games, they Phillies as a young team, which is not it's not crazy on that. This was going to happen. But they struck out a lot and it really took away a lot of chances late in games to just make contact and get a running. They couldn't do that. Sicker. Is one of the toughest hitters in baseball. Okay. Yeah. Absolutely. And I felt like that was a problem with the problem. I have with the strikeouts worth so much the the number of them. It works how they came. Right. It was a lot of for me. It was a lot of three pitch strikeouts. In times. Not a lot of foul off your guys. Like, there's recent had the ability or to waking out in that. And then if he struck out you're going down those. Oh, the hell of it bat. Right. I mean, there's so many times that you get down to your one two punch out. No foul up on a on a really good pitch hitting not easy. So we all know that. But at times you wanna see like a little bit more on the grinding of choking up. Maybe putting him play just to see if you could create something, and I get it part of the philosophy of what the Phillies and the Phillies hitters, and and stop is obviously creating damage, and that's all great. I fully believe that. But there are times where you do need to, you know, not choking poke with get the guy over having a determined to bat determined approach to get guys over guys in in. You know, what that was kind of lacking at the end, and it starts with guys up top. And researchers recently one guy, and we saw you know, the amount of time that he does strike out. But you see how many times? Pitch after pitch after pitch to get to the next one. And if he if he does punch you out, then you're you're almost you're going. I I saw it, but June cigarroa, he's the guy that you will follow a lot of stuff off. He will battle his butt off. And you know, more times than not you'll get out. I get that. We we all get that. Right. I mean, he's begging always be like man, it's got it means the greatest thing. No. But there's times where he knows that the strike was fine runner. I rambled pitcher. Maybe I take I got on the whole thing. But then there's times where he's like there's a third that infield back. I just tap it up the middle. You know, I just need to get it right at the second baseman restore stop, and he'll do that. Yeah. The situation on baseball. They they didn't have enough of last year. He he certainly would bring that. Kevin francis. Joining us right now on the sports. Call two guests line Kevin going to be doing Eighty-one Phillies games next year alongside Scott France key, Kevin now, I'm excited. I looked next season. Heard you yesterday as I was driving in do my show with Mark Cerise? And you were talking about how exciting next year could be. In the possibility of October and a lot of that's going to hinge on what McClintock does between now. And let's say spring training in this next week could be a big part of that. Let's start with the big names, then we'll get to the pitchers, and there's some big names in there till let's hang on a second. You know, these deals going down in Vegas. I brought this up on my show here in the bay. Are we gonna see some drunken deal done that? So I just wanted to go. I always love the old story about the Yankee owner and the Red Sox owner back in the day getting drunk and agreed to trade DiMaggio for Ted Williams. And they wake up in the morning like we sit and do that. I think we're good. I think we're good. He wasn't social media, then they are good. And you know, what I think John Middleton has any has any drinks out in Las Vegas. We might see the biggest contract in the history of ever because it looks like the Phillies want to spend a lot of money. Kevin you're team mates with Bryce Harper. You've watched Manny Machado for years. We've heard conflicting reports over the last month locally. We I still a lot of Machado nationally. It seems like the national writers say Harper's their number one target. I tell me about Harper is a teammate. And then I want to hear who you think should be their number one target number worn. I love Bryce Bryce is a great kid. And he's a kid. That's the one thing we all have to remember on this whole thing when I played with them. He was what twenty two years old. In everything that he does or says or whatever is just a lightning rod for for whoever. And whatever you'd be silly. He would strive there. Because. And just there's a demand. There's there's obviously demand by by Phillies fans for not. It's not about greatness. It's about passion. And there's a there's a true passion that he has for the game that I think we just couldn't perfect there. Obviously, you know, the young talent they have recent him would be twenty six years old together. Righty lefty in that in that lineup in you're going on my like, you could see all the possibilities one protecting the other. And then just creating you know, I love Bryce at. I hope I get the call a bunch of his games and the number thirty four jersey. I I I wanna say being the last, you know, to where it was with doc. And I think that would look pretty good on him there. So I'm a big fan. There are certain things that you you're gonna get when you get with Bryson. There's. You got the Johnny huddle stuff. But there are times that he jogs down the line, and it shouldn't be one of those alarming things. It's like, I'm a big fan of of guys that go, you know, that outta hell down the first base. All our chase utley. There's only like one of him in the world. And there really is braces the guy that you know, what it'd be like a one hopper invasion walked the I I need you in in game. One fifty. I'm not saying that's going to happen. I'm just saying like there's there's things that I I feel like to to go back very Machado. He's opened. He's opened up a whole new world on on everything with those comments. And and he can go back and do all the the social media and interviews he wants. But that's out there. You know people. Maybe it was it was just the wrong timing. But he's productive. He's a good player. And if people want to rest on just what? He said, they're not service that lets the whole deal you could, you know, reacting in and go with whatever you want with whatever he does. But just remember this the play and this dude will make you many Machado or Bryce artful will make your team better. At the moment. They come under a into your organization onto the squad you're becoming a better organization for having those guys in your lineup. And on the field. You are. And for the Phillies foundation piece, either of them young and superstar players are found days to pieces here, Kevin. And I think a lot of us assume they're going to get one of the two and kind of build the off season off of that along with them pitching seems to be a target for the Phillies. They were in on Patrick Corbin. He went to the national's. And now we're looking at some of these names left in free agency. There's also trade options. Let me ask you about Madison Bumgarner because you know, the kid you're out there in San Francisco talking about them on a daily basis, I need you. Kevin. To kind of calm, my fears. I love the pitcher I loved what he was at his best twenty fourteen. What he did there like it in twenty four. Well, that's true. But what he did. It was amazing. But you gotta call my fears because I look at the last two years and I see red flags. I mean, his strikeout rate is not what it was. Should. I be nervous. If the Phillies acquire Bumgarner. No. 'cause you're talking about the best big game pitcher. And and the fact of the matter is you're hoping as a Phillies fan, or you know, in many regards talking about him every night and talk about a very competitive team were every game is a big game. And that's a good thing. You know, you go back on the injuries there to fluke injuries there ones. The baseball related injury in the Whitney field, but it's not a throwing related injury. With marysville.."
