I just gleaned jaunty jolly against the furniture. Oh my goodness as a theater story. Wow that's that's a theater story. We won't forget. I don't think anyone could I'm going to go to say you can find a better theater story by it because you're not going to top that that always puts an end to actors get together. I forgot my line coriolanus and aw I stabbed myself with the source that was awful. I always wait till I wish I would have stabbed myself all told their stories and and then and then you tell your toppers layer it is have you ever heard Noel Coward Song. Why must show go on? We we love that. We loved that it's just great great. Sometimes there are reasons go on their own. Just no no no of course not and your professional will go out in my shit. He pants dipped in the first row so you've done so many different kinds of things a lot of people my age no you from disturbing behavior savior as the Cocoa Bananas Janitor who saves the Children and you had some fun ticks and I did I did I yeah that was the first time I worked with David Nutter. Who is my I absolutely adore flea named I adore David Nutter? I think he's one of the most best underrated directors on the planet for a while there. He had a string of he would do. He was the go-to Guy. If you wanted to your pilot to get on the air he had I think he had a track record of fifteen for fifteen online and then he didn't like the whole last season of game of thrones and half of it or something but anyway he did that funny character in the rats I forgive ah it's all about the audition and he was brave enough to you know he said Yeah I could see. Let's go see that what you're an actor who brings things to to the to the table. You don't just read your lines right. You're contributing creatively and I'm sure that directors smart directors rectors are grateful for that. I think so I think I like to think I'm sure that's not always the when we did bill and Ted. We did bogus journey. There was a there's a moment where we're in the hardware store and the grim reaper is pushing the cart around I push the cart and I thought wouldn't it be great if he passed as somebody who is smoking a cigarette and he said see you real soon and the guy just goes a cigarette. It's two twenty seconds of film and it would be fun. We didn't have any but I told PTY at the director and we didn't have anybody to do it an actor to do it and he said I'll he so that's the director he said. Bring the bring the camera over here and and that's precisely how did it and it took two seconds and it was like but I love but I love that stuff. Well yeah I I really I really enjoy being able to have ideas and you know they don't all have to get into the movie but but it's really fun to be able to bounce them off of the people sure because every once in a while it's just like no we have to do that and that that was one of them now you play the grim reaper again in a tales from the crypt episode. was that straight or or funny. I think it was funny I can't I think it was fun. I'm asking you a question about an episode of a show. You did decades ago fair Newhart Newhart L. U. Ah Roseanne. It's been on everything fun fact I played the clumsiness guy on earth on newhart. I got clumsy guest best right guest and I got the I was staying at friend's house in L. A. He and I had done this audition for the job and I got the I went back to their house. These friends of mine lived on Franklin and their son was out on the sidewalk owned with a skateboard and I thought Oh that looks like fun. I'll try that I thought he went to feet and the thing would and I fell and I sprained my right ankle right. Swell up like that and then my agent called and said you got the job of that was on Friday. You Start Monday so Monday. I show up and I'm just I didn't tell anybody that my bank. I'm just I'm not gonNA LIMP. I'm not GonNa blow this opportunity and we did the read through and then we started blocking the show the way they do and Bob. Newhart said GonNa be funny. How about if you fell down the stairs? Could you fall down the stairs. I bet that it'd be funny. Oh yeah that'd be that'd be funny if I fell down the stairs instead of just walking down so so so I I had to figure out a way to slip and fall and not use my right foot at all the whole way down. I thank you found out things we do. Things do indeed well again. You can't top your own stories. That's the problem you know being having your ankle and a splint is nothing that you played a whole act with diarrhea on the stage. You have impressed my molten. I mean it's hard to hard to get past that is is part of what is overwhelming. You've been working a long time and you've done so much but I can't imagine everyone must recognize as you from different things because again. If you're my age it's could be roswell disturbing behavior things like that but for somebody else it could be a play that they saw you in for somebody else. It could be you know die hard two or or worked for read mile also those you know that's that's absolutely to everybody that everybody recognizes me. Who is the gentleman earlier Kevin the deep space nine three clubs some deep space nine our fearless leader here at the high ball all but you're absolutely right everybody gets to has their favorite thing? Remember which there's always a treat I did to just recently to two years on two seasons of a show called power yeah you did and now now. I can't walk down the street street in New York without penalty. y'All Tommy's there you cute that was visually that was great casting you and just Sikora because you've definitely definitely have the simple. You have those blue eyes piercing size you do you do fun. Fact Yeah your bullet these I I know I didn't even remember this. When I got that job they called up and Courtney Kemp and I talked and I they made the offer and I liked it and I wanted to do it and and Joseph Cora was at the read through the table readings GonNa play my son and he said you remember me? I thought Oh oh no dial for murder. Because I'm terrible about that. He said now apparently he was an audition in L. A. and he had blown at Warner brothers and he had just not done terribly terrible. Hey stunk up the place just awful and he was sitting in a diner across the street it kicking himself and I walked in and he recognized me and we got talking and I said something to him. Like you know you know cheer up yeah. This is a long ride. Don't beat yourself up over this one. This better stuff come in. I don't know what I said. You were kind in a moment that he needed kindness yeah people remember that it means a lot Kinda says far I yeah I guess it it really does and that's the thing somebody something to him. If he remembered it like fifteen years later he was like he said I went home. I told my wife about it. I was like oh I can't believe work. We great that's so well that must have added Hawaii to seem like such a father and son Yeah. Oh man that part that part is that was fun to watch you. Do what the only because you're you're. You're a bastard but you're not and we want to hate you sometimes but then the whole thing every emotion and I'm one hundred percent that person sitting there on Sunday night just grunting and making noises going don't do the argument now do that work with rule. Yes yes who who's dying of cancer all of that going on. I've been unfaithful. I've got a kid by somebody somebody else that great. This is really fun scene where she slaps me so hard rain spun around. I I know it's Mercedes have been waiting to slap for a long time. You just happened and I just happened to be just happened to be face. You know oh but she was shoes. Just phenomenal were talk about that's what that's what I find. The most fun is when people who are the people who bring their they bring their game and it becomes like becomes a different kind of tennis match. You know you bring your game and they bring their game and the thing just like lifts off the page and neither one of us know where this is going to go. You know what I mean Johnson. I kid done. I don't yeah it's true that and that's I think as I say for the audience you get challenged you get of course. It's like playing tennis match. You say when you'RE GONNA. You'RE GONNA if you're paying champion. You've got to use step up. Step up you. Bring your best. That's what I I always my. My memory of of Shawshank of shooting Shashank was sitting around the dining table and every single one of James Whitmore's sitting there. Morgan Freeman is sitting there and Tim Robbins is over there and all the rest of and everybody brought their down game everybody brought their game. You couldn't look you couldn't look at any face on that table that wasn't feeding their and that's what was really fun. It felt like it felt like a tennis match. You would throw a look to Brian Libyan. He you know it bounced around around the room and Frank Darabont. I gather liked having that that kind of energy yeah yeah yeah yeah. He is the only movie that the only move ever done where they brought us to this place two weeks early to rehearse. Oh Wow that's a luxury. It's just because he wanted first of all he wanted theater actors. You'd want movie stars see wanted actors and because he wanted it it to feel like an ensemble and he wanted to feel like these people knew each other for nineteen years you know so all of those little webs of of the by play as ing and the Horse horsing around that went on that's what he wanted. I mean he was very you clear about it and that's what we gave them and he obviously liked what you did because he asked it'd be next month. I know I know it's like being in a rep company. it was wonderful yeah. It's funny you think about it that way. That's exactly it was like sorta sort of reminds me of Orson Welles. He had the same in the mercury players worked with the same actors over and over again and you know why because they're good and end they have you can count on them. You know yeah you know you don't have to worry about personalities or is this guy going to be a jerk and blow up the movie. you know so you gather around all of these players and and get them going. You know what what what do you want from a director. What what do you look for in a director job? I'd given that you've got the SA- already how's the cheese ACCIARI. You can't talk me anyway I I would I need from a director's usually is the big picture is because I can get lost in the minutia I can I can I can get all lost in the in the in the moment to moment to moment and and finding this discovering that and so on I need someone who stands outside of it and says and reminds is be where we are in the Ark of the whole story because it may not be a good time to get lost in the minutiae as as fun or charming or or whatever it is we may be racing toward the end of the film you know Frank and frank was frankly great at that he would you know seeing where this you know where where is this going to fit in the in the bigger picture.
