Listen: Donald Trump, Bill Daugherty, Jim Tiffany Wilson Worsely discussed on How Do We Fix It?
"And then they talk to them at great length slowly on the other side. I have a Trump supporting relative. Yeah. How do I deal with that? How do I try and well and prove that that relationship? So this is the other thing we do in terms of our of better Angeles work, we do skills workshops. Okay. Where people can learn to an app three hours. They learned skills, and how to communicate with somebody. That's very different. And so. So one of those skills is to express curiosity to ask somebody. So I have I have a relative from Texas, which is red country. And so when we get together, I say, I'm curious about people are seen Trump in your part of the world right now. And then we're into the conversation along the way he tells me his view, and I expressed interest. And not judgement not judgment interest. And then. By the norms of human reciprocity. If I express interest. We'll see if I'm understanding this what you're saying. How do people think about this? How do you think about that? And then by the norms of human reciprocity. He's going to be more open to what I say people have to save face. Nobody nobody wants to be portrayed a stupid ignorant blindly self-serving how you doing with with better angels. Is it more or less successful than you thought? It would be when it started just weeks after Trump was elected in two thousand sixteen far more successful than I could have imagined. I mean, we have workshops going on at twenty five states. We have we had one hundred and fifty workshops when tremendous media attention. We're building a social media arm, and I've never in my career. And I've been at this a long time have had people beat a pathway to my door saying can we do this? Could you? Come and talk. Can we do workshops can we we in my career? I've always had a convince people there's a problem. Okay. Hard to do. And then if they agree then it my solution is worth considering this problem. Everybody knows it's there, and we have a new way to address it. Bill says this combination of blue and red is crucial to better angels. Success? Most civil conversation programs are created by blues. That's that's that's the blues belly wick and the language if you look on websites, if you look on our website, you do not see a lot of blue language or read language about why we call us workshops. Okay. And we don't use language like authenticity. Being with can conversation. But the blue language is all over the place. And we we teach our moderators to not introduce that language is not an our workshops. It's not material Bill Daugherty who says that change in America will come from local citizens groups and filter up to the state capitals in Washington before we end in Minneapolis. I want to go back to the first person we spoke to Jim Tiffany Wilson Worsely who had a few thoughts on Donald Trump. That may surprise you. She suggests that having him as president is an opportunity. Absolutely never in history. Have we ever had anyone as bold in crazy FM? If you think about a we Americans, we are both people we a courageous people. And we're really crazy. We are crazy, right? A lot of times we can hide are crazy because we get to vote for a person who fits the standard. But now American said, we're not voting for the standard anymore. We. Voted for ourselves. And so now that we get an opportunity to look at ourselves.."
