Listen: Michael Lang, Joe Cocker, Woodstock discussed on Rolling Stone Music Now
"'cause I started going year after that. And I mean, we're all set up literally in the middle of downtown Chicago. Like, you leave the festival, and you are walking through just like all the street main street State Street, Michigan like you're going straight into the city like into the heart of where people are going to be working, especially on a Friday and lollapalooza is relatively well run. I found it to be the festival self to be great like you, obviously are not spending the night in the middle of grant park and relatively smaller than a lot of other festivals. You're going back to tell but the crowds leaving the festival have caused a big issue in Chicago. And I know there's been some pushback year after year from the city to shutdown lollapalooza because of the crowd size as it gets bigger every single year as they try to accommodate the demand for tickets in the way that festival culture has become so popular with this generation with music fans with people wanting to go to destination festivals and planning there year around going to three now four day festival in downtown Chicago. So even with the well runs. It's like because of the size of the crowds because of the demand because of you know, their it's gotten bigger every single year the first year, I went it was only one headliner on Sunday night or two headliners on Friday and Saturday now it's four days and four headliners at least every single night people are packing the entire festival trying to get out of there is insane. So I know there's pushback for even that Coachella was kind of similarly a mess. Trying to get out of it trying to get through it. Obviously. I don't know how it's been the last Hoberman years that's been, but I know that with that it's definitely similar issues with crowds and traffic and trying to get people controlling on this in one place. So we thought we'd finish up by talking about a couple of festivals that are coming up this year, which are aniversary festivals for Woodstock one is actually called Woodstock fifty. The other one is like Bethel Bethel woods concert for the. Yes. The deal is the Bethel one is at the original site, right? Which was turned into a fifteen thousand seat amphitheater now where they look shows all summer long. Whereas the other one is put together by Michael Lang who still owns the name Woodstock. Yeah. And is being held where it's Watkins Glen to same side as the festival that was in seventy three which is even bigger than Woodstock crowd was and I'm funding these festivals confusing who is the target audience. I spoke to Michael laying in he wants all ages, but he's gearing his Woodstock Adler adults also. So there's no hotels. They're really. So he said that there's going to be very nice glancing tense with a lamp and four and four walls to those five. And he said that the bathrooms will be super clean, and they won't smell, and they need to be emptied the entire time. And then the mkx fertilizer they wanna Dulce to come glam for the weekend. Feels you say that flashing back towards taking a step and realizing I've stepped into sewage. As porta potty technology has advanced in huge ways recently, and it's a game changer and to get adults. They're also he's having major stars as he put it do tributes to the band, and Janice Joplin and Joe cocker. I think that he might be overestimating the audience for a joke cocker tribute glow. He manage Okaka for a while. So I think he's very in the Joe cocker. Oh, good. So there's a lot of objectively the The builder, builder. and he says he who's going to be is going to be like is like Billy Islas gonna come and pay tribute to Joe cocker what he can only list. Who's doing the honor? But he told me that they are booking legacy bands that played the first Woodstock. So I become obsessed with us Andy Roda, an interesting article in which you basically proved there is no legacy band play Woodstock. I asked the who myself. I asked p towns in his own house and hell no I asked Neil young on Tuesday. And he said, no, I feel like you do like I asked about doing ask the rails. Speaker. Young. He said, no and Santana spoke to my colleague Corey who said that he wanted to play Michael Lang's, but it seemed a bit disorganized.."
