Listen: Donald Glover, Tina Donald And Guava Island discussed on Q
"From guava island, which is a new movie starring Donald Glover, which premiered at this is interesting to me it premiered at the music festival over the weekend after Donald performed as childish Gambino. A movie premiered at music festival now streaming for free Amazon prime Tina Donald teasing this movie for a long time. People were going to wonder whether it was a music film or a narrative feature film what what is club island. I watched most of it. And I'm still not one hundred percent. Sure what it was. It's kind of like a mix of all these different things where you know, people will burst out into song. But it's also still technically a narrative because you know, he's a guy who lives on this fictional island trying to put together a music festival. So technically like it is a movie is in a feature length movie. But it's also only fifty five minutes long. So in some ways, it just feels it's a very slim production, you know, but you know, we've got a lot of. Of really great talent here. In addition to Riano, we've got here Marai who worked on Atlanta. We've got Letitia right. We've got lots of great people who can bring their flare their music talents to this. But I have to say for screenwriting goes, I was a little I don't know. Disappointed. It's it felt kind of anticlimactic, but super bright and colorful, I love the fashion. I love the way that it looks. Yeah. It is because I feel like everything Donald Glover touches turns to gold. Whether it's whether it's music or TV show, Atlanta. I'm surprised he didn't love it. I know me too. Because I I have been a very big Donald Glover fan ever since the days of community. But I have to say that I feel like he's kind of stretching on this. And I will also they say this it focuses so much on him. I find you know, repeating that this is America when he's already created a much better in my opinion music video for it. Just felt I'm like, okay. What else is new here? You know what else? Have you got? And designating riana to sort of like, the simple narrator slash girlfriend role without giving her much else. Just fell. I don't know could've used are more. She's an amazing actress in addition to being an amazing singer, John John why release the film this way? Like, it's an interesting question Tina, or anyone who goes film festivals might appreciate this problem, which sometimes you go see movies, and they're, you know, sixty one minutes long, a Matteis Pineyro film or something like that. And there's no sort of avenue for that. You know, it's not going to get a conventional theatrical distribution because I think people might feel like they're getting ripped off paying twelve bucks for an hour. Long movie. Likewise on TV. There's sort of stable categories of the twenty two minutes sitcom or the hour long drama, something like Atlanta jams up those categories. But I think maybe streaming platforms like this as we're seeing with even the criterion channel with which launched last week. We can see films that are at different lengths because we don't necessarily have those expectations. So a weird sort of what is this movie like Ouaga island naturally? Kind of finds a home. But at a music festival. It's like everything. What's the word? Trans media that live concerts in the internet streaming and movies are all sort of collapsing into this one space, and I think we see that guava island or certainly in the promotion of it. Although I will admit there's too many streaming services because I tried to find it"
