Listen: A new story from The Adam Schefter Podcast
"Thirty cap hit. Now turn to my colleague my friend the ESPN analytics six guru. Evan Kaplan and Evan we just heard from the Raiders Safety Eric Harris who made more than a name for himself last night and performed incredibly. Well what is your take. Take A. Where the raiders stand in this? AFC West race with the Kansas City chiefs Adams. It's incredible and I think the thing we have to remember with the raiders. I is the backdrop of that ridiculous road trip. They had in the middle of this season where they went basically six weeks without playing a home game so you put that in perspective active where they they kinda survived during that road trip they went two and three and now they're back at home where they've won two straight there now five and four. They're right in the thick pick of the AFC playoff picture when you talk about a wild card and think about this they play the winless bengals on Sunday illegal weapon. If they win that game they are tied side for the division lead with the chiefs. Now I don't think a lot of people would have predicted that ten weeks into the season. We know mahomes miss some time and the have their own issues on defense. But the raiders leaders with thinking about the raiders and where they were coming into the season the whole saga with Antonio Brown and now they find themselves in their last season. Looks like an Oakland and and in Prime Position for playoff run and listen to this. Just look at the schedule down the stretch. You can play the schedule game team but you played the Bengals at home. I I mean. I can't believe the raiders wouldn't win this game. You never know. Look we saw this week. The Falcons one in New Orleans. The Dolphins win in Indianapolis. It happens but again if everything goes the way it should they take the Bengals as you mentioned they share first place the next week they play at the jets winnable game at Kansas the city December. I would what shapes to be a game that could be to determine the leaf the AFC west. And let's just say they don't win that game. Right come home for back to back games. Tennessee and Jacksonville. What about home before? Travelling to the chargers which is like a home game for them will be a road game here at Denver in the last game of the year in a game in which the broncos causal I would expect would be done by then so it's really not a challenging schedule no stretch. It's not and you look at the teams that are competing with I mean nobody. Nobody is head and shoulders above them. The bills the steelers. The colts the titans if you WANNA throw the Jaguars they're all kind of they feel like similar teams. They've they've shown glimpses they've been inconsistent. A lot of them have dealt with quarterback injuries. The raiders not one of them. But you look at the steelers the colts and the Jaguars all have so those five five or six teams are kind of bunched together. So I wouldn't be surprised off the raiders come out and get one of those wildcards in the AFC. Well the team they're competing with as you mentioned is the chiefs and the chiefs from Monday night football all this week back to Mexico City. The venue that was supposed to be in place last year before poor. Field conditions shifted the chiefs rams game. That was such a great game to Los Angeles Angels. What about the mahomes Monday night? Magic as opposed to the chiefs defense. That's really struggling right now. Right you got two things really here in my eyes in in Patrick mahomes third career start on Monday night. Football the first to have been a memorable is putting it lightly so the first one was in Denver Early in the season last year. uh-huh you remember. He threw the left hand. xactly the tyreek Hill to convert a key third down on their game winning drive a a win in the final minutes for the chiefs and then the other time you mentioned that rams chiefs game last year all he did was six. Touchdown passes a Monday night football record in a losing effort which which gets us a nice segue that defense and look. We saw it and week. Ten against the titans and the chiefs are giving up over twenty three points per game in this season there have only been five teams in NFL history to allow that many points per game and reach the Super Bowl. You put that in perspective it look at history says you can't reach the Super Bowl allowing that many points now. I know we're in kind of a different. NFL and we've seen these high-scoring playoff games. They lost left in thirty eight thirty one last year. But I kind of speaks to the point. You've got mahomes in this offense scoring thirty points and you're not winning these games that you should be winning. I I think amazing amazing that happens art have and I think we have the Chiesa Monday night. We've got the raiders trying to catch him. But I think the best individual match up of the weekend. Lamar Jackson I SEAN watching to. MVP at its two of the three most dynamic young players in the game along with Patrick bombs. What are we making that match up? This is a great one and and it goes back to college. You think about them in the two thousand sixteen heisman trophy. They were one two with Lamar Jackson. Winning to Sean finished second they played a memorable game In College when Clemson beat Louisville Louisville bill was down huge. Lamar Jackson lend them on a big combat. But it wasn't enough Clemson won that game and now you you look at them in the NFL and think about all the great a quarterback performances. We've had this year. You had Aaron Rodgers threw five touchdowns and ran for a touchdown in Green Bay. You talk about all the Great Russell Wilson performances. These three best best individual performance of the two thousand nineteen season belong to Lamar Jackson. And Shawn Watson you look at total. QBR which takes everything that a quarterback does Amar Jackson has the highest total. QBR's in a single game. This year we ten against the Bengals won against the dolphins third on that list to Shawn Watson in week. Five against the Falcons so these guys have done it on individual game basis. They've done it the entire year. The they're the only two quarterbacks to have at least fifteen touchdown passes and five rushing touchdowns they're impossible for the defenses to stop and I think that's kind of an interesting factor in this game. Is that the defense is kind of see the the opposing quarterback in practice all the time I don't know how big of a factor that is but And then the bigger picture look. This is a big game for the AFC playoff picture down the stretch. Yeah I mean that's what I think might get lost in the lead up to and on Sunday is that it's all Lamar to Sean. And I'm not downplaying all as I just put the numbers in perspective as you said before for. They are two of the dynamic young quarterbacks in forget about young. They are two of the dynamic quarterbacks in this game I think we gotta take the young label away from that. You look at the Ravens into her seven into the Texans who were six three. This could end up becoming a huge game that we look back on for playoff seed. Here's my question to you. If I gave give you the number one pick today and you can pick either of those quarterbacks Lamar Jackson or does Shawn Watson who could pick I. I would take the Shawn Watson close. It's very very close but I would take Watson I don't have a great reason why I just when it comes down to it I still I trust him a little more. If becomes a pocket passing game down the stretch now that being said Lamar Jackson completed eighty percent in the last two games. So let's I think the the idea that Lamar is just a running quarterback that's out the window now but if given the two I think I would take Sean. It's a great question it really is. It's it's we. We posed that question on the Monday. Night countdown says you're in San Francisco one of the brakes and I thought about it and I'm like wow how. Who would you take like? You could make an argument for each one. You really good and I think I'd take no disrespected. Lamar Jackson the show. I I start with MOMS. Yeah okay I think he'd be my first pick. I just I just love watching that guy play. But Man Lamar Sean. They're not far behind and they are changing the game as we know it and they are fascinating to watch and it's going to be a great match up on Sunday right. We also have on Sunday a super bowl fifty fifty two rematch the Patriots and the Eagles. What are we think of that? Tom Brady referenced. Earlier this week about that game certainly still still sticking with them and Philly special you remember that game had everything in that super bowl but this will be the the. This'll be Carson wentz under center for the Eagles Nick Foles in that game so this'll be wentz. This is first start against Brady. Both teams Kinda coming off a bye patriots coming off a loss in their previous game against the Ravens with Their worst defensive performance this year. Sure and you look at Brady in this offense and dating back to week four. It's really an offense. That hasn't really gotten things going Tom. Brady's total QBR's ars below average under fifty. And I know you've mentioned some of the guys that they may be getting back on offense but an interesting game with both teams coming off a bye that I don't know. Oh if I'd be surprised if the Eagles won that game at home against the Patriots despite the Patriots being eight and one and you feel about that ad but certainly one of the interesting interesting you always have these interesting games teams in opposing conferences later in the year You can project ahead and that's one this weekend. Well it's it's a fascinating match up and I would bet that Tom Brady is going to be thinking about what it would have been like the beat. The Eagles and that Super Bowl when we're done furthermore for the Patriots Place in history low at secure enough as it is and I'm sure Carson Wentz on there what it would have been like for him to play in that Super Bowl exactly leading the eagles against the patients. It should be a great match up and you said you like the Eagles that game. I don't like Eagles. That's not what I said. I would not be surprised if the Eagles won that game. I just think coming off the bye at home. I think it'll be close game but look at Bill Bell check with two weeks to prepare. It would be tough to pick the eagles. I just met I don't think I think it'll be a tough game. You look at it and and this is one more interesting note about this game brady if you go back to the Super Bowl and then their previous regular season matchup also lost against the eagles. It would be certainly a rarity for Tom. Brady to lose three straight games to the same opponent. I mean that's only happened against three teams in his career against the cold. Colds broncos and the giants previously and his career include the playoffs. So Tom Brady losing three straight games to the same opponent now. I don't know so now. I think I've talked of myself into it and also it would also mean that coming off a loss against the Baltimore Ravens before their bye week that the Patriots would have lost two straight games in the regular season and something about that seems hard to imagine as well because that's just not the kind of thing that the Patriots do especially when they're giving an extra week to prepare for this game as the Eagles Eagles were as well coming off a bye week of their own but hard to imagine the Patriot. Susan two straight as but listen no. They've lost the eagles before it could happen again. And to quote you you would not be surprised. Yeah we'll see where we are next week when it was probably thirty one thirteen patriots. They're nine and one on the season. Alright Evan I appreciate the a time. Enjoy week eleven. We'll talk to you during week. Twelve pounds go down thank you. ESPN grew Evan. Kaplan before we get to your ask Adam Adam questions. I A were from vivid seats.
