Listen: Atlanta, Georgia, Houston discussed on The Twelve Six Podcast
"On the reasons are playing hearts on my phone was because they play hearts in the at the clubhouse and on the plane and all the guys don't WanNa play I like I said it was never good at card games I didn't know how to play and JV challenged me to figure it out. And I was like Okay so downloaded on my phone. Learned the rules. Because I'm a rule follower so I read all of the instructions and all the rules. I five times over started playing and then told Ashley. Hey I'm playing hearts she got into it and now we will both sit on the couch and not talk to each other now play hearts. We're on this like huge sectional and Elsa on one side and I'll sit on the other time won't be touching interacting talking and all but we're both playing hardships but then like I know you make that noise they saddled with the Queen Spades. Didn't they need like in every time every time so like we are so connected and our disconnection My most og deep dive into old school computer games was like during the world series and through that offseason I went deep into minesweeper minesweeper. I decided that I would not be satisfied until I played the mega minesweeper and beat it and it took me months and then we took a tripped banff for New Year's Eve and like the whole flight out and whole flight back. I was playing minesweeper on my phone and to the degree that Colin was like. Speak to me like acknowledged that I exist. Stop playing minesweeper and I was just hooked and on that trip. I beat the mega minesweeper. And I haven't played it a single time since done you've conquered it icon. There was one of those that I was. I never really got into with you over like this is not for me you tried but I mean honestly minesweepers heart. Yeah I get frustrated. Oh gratification there's it's like it's like Binary Zeros and ones and there's no like graphics honestly that's the reason I don't play video games because I've never been good at at them especially the shooter games or whatever was they. Don't play shooting yes. So they're like oh you should get onto it. You should play play four night with us. We can all do it together. We can play Klay Online and do groups and whatever that Kinda Shit has no. I'm not into. It may be bad at it and then I'm GonNa get frustrated in them and a yell at you. I'm not going to like you and I want to like you so I like all my teammates. They play for night. I don't probably why I think the very last question. We had a couple of questions kind of touching on says but it was the Split there we do between Georgia and Texas putting time between George why we live in Georgia. Why we split between Georgia and Texas? Why are we haven't moved all the way out to Texas and since we live in both was that look like during the season. I mean if I would have known six years ago that we were still be playing waiting for the Houston Astros. Yeah we would have gotten a house. He heard about a house here. Yeah I still don't think we would have spent the offseason here probably not But we would have bought a house just like like for the investment. We've paid so much in rent monthly for the past six years that we definitely could have been should have bought a house. We're both Fr- not originally from Georgia. I was born in Denver for Colin was born just outside of Chicago Naperville but did all like elementary Middle High School in college and Georgia most. That's our parents live in Georgia. My grandparents on my Dad's side live in Georgia both sets of your grandparents in Georgia that there's a lot. There's a lot of people over friends community family. Yeah all in Georgia and and when I was running my business even the minor leagues it was based in Atlanta. So my clients were Atlanta the weddings doing we're in Atlanta. All my like business this networking and like philanthropy type stuff was based in Atlanta. And I think at a certain point you know with friendships and everything. We both care a lot. I mean you mentioned Sunday care a lot about friendship. We both care a lot about community in our community is in Atlanta and it was something that we're just unwilling to do long distance on always I remember in two thousand fourteen when we were looking at buying a house and we thought to ourselves we can move anywhere we want to. We could really. Nothing's erling nothing holding down other than people in Atlanta and thought of moving anywhere else and moving away from these people didn't make sense for us and so we thought we bought this house This is going to be there for us like we're going to be here this. WE'RE GONNA put down some roots because up until then had been so hard to put down roots anywhere. We'd move so many times we're still kind up and down between the big leagues and the Minor Leagues and it was a it was a challenge to stay connected to community so I think getting a house in Atlanta buying a house in Atlanta making that statement statement. This is where we're going to be important for us from from that perspective to say like a we're invested here we're going to. We're going to continue to to be here for at least a little while. Yeah and What it looks like during the season you know when I was still working fulltime up until our first son was two years old? I was still working fulltime and I ran a letter. Press for like the last three four years of my business and a letter. Press if you don't know is an archaic cast iron machine to print paper. You're in the least efficient or technical technological way that exists in present day. I said you you enjoy the Struggle Charl so some bringing Gutenberg stuff. I chose that So it does not mobile. You cannot move a letter press so if I had to print a wedding order business cards or anything I had to go home. I'm so it kind of just split up my life on the baseball season so it used to be before we had kids that if Collin was on a road trip go on the road trip and if he was at home in in Houston I would stay in Atlanta. Because I know Houston looks like so I was just like I'll just go to all the random places with you and then when you go to Houston you're around your friends and your teammates. I'll stay in Atlanta and I'll work so he did that and I would fly the beginning and end of every road trips every eight days then ahead our son Shaw and that worked the first year I still did that. Second Year was working a little bit less than we went to the world series. That was the first time that we like really did a full postseason. And we we're like deep into the season did not come home for like a normal off-season and at the end of that offseason. That's when I closed the business. It was really really hard. It was so much of identity wrapped up into it but honestly all I was working for like less than minimum wage because small business owner running my own business did not put any baseball money into my business. It was all like on. Its own so it was just struggles. Small Business Struggle and had a two year old to take care of an a baseball schedule schedule and a husband that I was trying to keep up with and it was just like it was the odd man out like I fell totally down. Two threads like hang on by thread stress all the time exhausted all the time and I was like something has to give something has to give and it was clearly my business which was yeah tougher me but the right choice and I knew it so after I closed my business and I had the second baby especially this year. We kind of revised the plan. So every time Collina's in home at home for home stand and I will be in Houston when they go on the road. That's when I go home to Atlanta and now he's taken it down to. I stay in Houston three weeks weeks at a time I go to Atlanta one week of the month so I'm about I'm home in Atlanta out seven days every month And I do that. We're building a house now in Atlanta. So so I've been having to go back home to kind of like over that. I'm basically managing the entire build of that house. So like meeting with the contractor and double checking things and picking taking lights and paint and countertops and all the stuff which we're almost done with and also home to like host book club every Thursday? When when Thursday a month I whose book club in our House I I'm still really involved with my Yoga Studio in Atlanta so I go to the studio and do the chalkboards boards for all the upcoming events at the Yoga Studio and take class there. When I'm home I see my friends? We try to help at least one like girls hang time. I just can't not you know like the idea of not connecting back in at home at all during a season is just I would lose so much more by. Why not going home that week then I would gain by having like to less lights on my schedule per month? Yeah and we've kind of found a pretty good balance at this point of how how much being home we need to be doing versus. How much being together we need to be doing We realized pretty early on that three weeks was her Max of being apart. We couldn't do it any more than three weeks being apart or else we both pretty much decided Why are we? Why are we together where we married? We're both very independent people so it it took us a little trial and error but we got to the point where three weeks as our backs and if to be apart for any longer than that than we make whatever adjustments I need to be made to after three weeks of being a part. That's when the fights started about like. Why should you think matter to me and vice versa? Existential why are we doing this. Why do I why should I even even care but no being together is good? Especially now that we've kids. Being a family together is necessary for sure. Yeah now it's totally different like if we left for more than a week at a time you wouldn't be seeing your kids for long stretches of time which people do and it's really tough So yeah it's a decision for family and for marriage marriage to to spend as much time together as we can but they're still enough in Atlanta worth maintaining family. Wise Friendship Wise is real estate. Wise that Yeah that I go home one week a month to just kind of check back in And I felt good about that. My kids have have a lot of Rico player. Points yet are both of our kids more on a plane within the first two months two months of their lives at their first flights were two months. Yeah so they've gotten pretty accustomed to it. None of it's ideal you'll get all the situations and the way you could do it and you're like none of this is like a recommended the ideal radio so you're just kind of like pick the best out of a bunch of complicated options but we've got it worked out pretty well by now. Yep this is our life is what we do. It's it's funny explaining him explaining to people who who don't understand."
