Each listener supported w NYC studios. Welcome to deer hanging John over to think of it and said hey I recently got a Pumpkin but it was broken so I had to go get a pumpkin patch your joke joke joke at the how how Weenie time started off as like an interesting story broken especially tangents our podcast where we talk about science things and we try to amaze each other with science facts and also beat each other in getting science related points Hank by with stupid hank thank you how are you doing are you still in place the people who join me on Sasha tensions are Seri Riley allow what's your tagline and I wanNA pokemon shirt oh that's a great tagline tells every everybody everything they need to know about you including my not middle aged man age range is in urge of like all editorial at crush course we're also joined by Sam Schultz producer special projects producer I believe myself a promotion the producer of any of the channels no by show kids ended tant and Siam but that a lot of youtube channel but you take on all of our like unique Jackson tangents you black ops lack Stephenson is also here I pretty good just had a lovely weekend out in the wilderness we brought back so much bread Stephan is a producer of show yeah you know make spreadsheets and stuff and also videos oh yeah I do that occasionally at Deer Hankins John we get a number of different kinds of questions we questions sometimes that are science questions people just like hit us and I'm like I love I'll answer your science and I get to help them do their homework or something I think that they're just having acting thoughts about the universe to give them the benefit of the doubt okay so we have frontloaded this episode with some science questions but we also have some normal questions so we'll see more than average will be science questions but also we wanna take on and help our help our listeners with various and I can't talk about science anymore I'm sick of it the record tomorrow I know it's your pallet cleanser so we're GONNA have our first question comes from Steph who has career Hankins tangents when I step in a puddle of mud and a bunch of microbes end up on the back of my legs and then I go and I have a shower to wash them off those microbes for the ride of their lives do they even notice or are they probably still chilling on the back of my leg somewhere suddenly concern for the microcosms Steph. I'm very the interested to know like what the experience of acceleration and like G. for so yes now at at the microscopic level microscopic organisms have they can sense things but mostly they sent things that are useful to them well entirely but we all some things that are useful to there are some that can detect gravity they can tell up from down so that they can move within but that's pretty unusual mostly what they can detect is oxygen concentration and light because of those are the things that are necessary for metabolism so they don't really care if they're like swirling around in in the like this I think about the ocean like the ocean like those molecules are just sloshing all over all the time they're not really aware of that in the way that like a human sloshing around in the ocean is just like a really quickly changing environment it's more like this changed the do this and that's a direct link there's no thought in between like microbes don't think the like the way that like a plant will turn to face the sun it's like this is over here and then there's sort of a direct molecular mechanism tells them to do the the next thing so in the mud puddle presumably there mud puddle loving microbes happy there. They got their nutrients than when they splash on the back of your leg you have different chemicals on the back of their leg and that can either be like wow what happened here it's you I don't like this at all I don't like the this I'm going to try to move away and like then they squirm and do whatever chemo taxis chemo taxes moving through a chemical gradient so I sent there's more oxygen here than there was here so move that way and they keep moving and that sort of like why microbes move is that they're traveling on chemical gradients there's also this idea that we're all doing that constantly all sort of traveling through a chemical gradient of our own brain chemistry and we don't actually make very many decisions on our own I feel that few like track every minute of your week and you do that week to week a discussing percentage of the things that you do are just like the same things that you do every week AAC new no I like showers I good eating I love recording of deer hey good job it's like how much of this am I choosing break no well definitely have you seen my calendar I don't calendars are just chemicals capitalism and chemical I feel like that's making again societal capitalism is sort of our societal soup that we have to sort of function inside of physical property angering a little bit of a tangential question you intentionally wash the back of your leg no yes yes I don't yeah I don't I like once a week probably haven't washed my calf yeah that's like hassle what's the water gets down there soapy water to like there are few key for well the run off of the dirt grease from your hair stuff going down the rest of your special attention for sure take a wash cloth thank you yeah I wash my feet because they like they have a sturdy tell their dirty whereas my calves like no matter what I do they're always just showing my cat you're like Whoa Whoa Whoa Moi my cam ep you wash your kneepads really boy you guys his kneepads again but you're never gonNA come into contact with my knee pit Oh yeah I guess you're right but someone like our next to a child that this hike of your knee and you're wearing shorts they could no I want them to have a slightly negative experience so that the learn not to grab my knee in helping this is something you need to know I mean sometimes I do it and I'm like Oh that's nice thanks for answering that question for me dear hanging tangent wire do tangents and Hank tangents and Hank what happens when an astronaut sneezes space do they fly across the room like in cartoons and if the sneeze occurred in the International Space Station how would they clean up the sneezed out fluid that is flowing in the air not Christa Christa. This is a great question that's good to know I mean equal opposite reaction of stuff's find out it puts you backwards yeah does this ain't we would float and the space station like this little droplet yeah oh I mean this seems like look this is the reason they don't want bread in the spaces our little particles that ended up in the air and then his behind your panels and then there's mold and stuff back there and then he can't clean it out there's filters and then the more you have to change the filters that more work it is the more maintenance there is but I think that like specifically for stuff like sneezing and you know various other reasons there might be droplets in space there are systems to take care of the droplets lawn I think to try to sneeze into something that orbit but to the filters do this for the stuff that doesn't caught and then also there are devices for capturing liquids that are traveling around vacuum cleaner that up you're waving your hand around and I imagine the Butterfly Net mugs you know for when you accidentally this p. that probably happens that's like that no if you're an astronaut in space though sometimes you know F- flowed out farther hold it in I don't know you might think about how scared to be in space look out the window and you're like Oh that's terrifying if you sneezed and didn't cover your mouth would you fly backwards but if he sneezed and Dracula you wouldn't fly backwards some 'cause the well not all that would be captured but yes if it fu you would get pushed back and then when the energy hit your hand it would push forward so cancel each other out if you were able to capture all the energy yeah okay also be useful if you get like stuck in at the medicine and you just whip out a little emergency pepper packet yourself genius journey of you stop your sneezes I like to do that and but now I feel like I trained myself to sneeze more through my mouth than my nose because I was doing that and I feel like that's bad and I'm GonNa die one day what sneezes go one hundred miles an hour I'm GonNa try to redirect it you're holding office out yeah I think that if like holding sneezes killed you we would hear about that more I'd be dead deer tangents in Hank why do we have toes I understand fingers but why toes seem very odd I can't even move them individually like I can my fingers what do they do please help fingers and toes cameras yeah I mean I like the fingers are pretty understandable they're super yeah yeah we don't consciously use our toes much using them to balance it time that sort of my thinking but hang seems to consciously use your toes consciously all the time pick up stuff with your toes I pick stuff up yeah bending over is hard for me because my because my hamstrings are very tight won't I don't feel like I have good towed ex dirty but also when it feels like Oh bending over his heart I should make a point to bend over then so that right that's a good point I should bend over music or loses holding a child in one arm and he's optus toy on the ground and he's crying and just pick it up with my toe does the fact that that we can't move all of them individually for the most part mean we're like evolving them to not be there anymore I think that they are useful and I think that there's definitely a side to side thing happening so the big toe and the pinkie toe and sort of the end toes they do independent things in need to do independ- ratings see wouldn't want like just a flipper out there but maybe we could evolve like a like a dino foot three two or three toes that's all when you got like a simple body plan this is like a hawks gene thing where like they're these special genes that do layout and it's better to just sort of rely on the same ones that say like okay there's going to be five things we're going to do it on this side and this side not on the bottom two and that worked well enough yeah it might be better to have fewer toes but it's even better to not have to like mess within the sort of body plan more which is why we ended up with you know all vertebrates on land having the same body plan ahead on the top two arms to Lex wild the bones in your hands and toes are called Foulland Jeez I remember from a vial and it's fun word eight were got a bunch of philanthropy hands are amazing Ryan quite a bit yeah sometimes you look at them near like what beautiful delicate perfect little machine and also when you talk to hard you like your tangents and Hank I'm seventy one years old and even though I have lots of Nice clothing no interest in dressing up I generally wear t shirts blue jeans and a sweatshirt but when you get old and you don't dress well people try to give you money on the street I enjoy the visibility the of old age and maintain that I could wear fuzzy pink slippers and no one would notice my wife on the other hand always looks her best and dresses up very nicely when we go out together it's a mismatch she never says is anything but I sense that it bothers her tonight join a twelve step group that was a big big I feel like you don't need it full stop look nice sometimes now that maybe the steps is like learning how to wear a new piece of right like this is the kind of twelve step group but I'm not the traditional IRA with the socks and then got from there how many do I have twelve pieces of clothing no talk sock shoe shoe over one sock at a time because that could be a fashion choice so you throw in a watch and a couple of rings get up to shoelaces are they close Oh maybe them as an accessory counter shoelace if you count a what assume.
