And so says is a good holiday to have good memories. I watch the football. You know. Be Special people so I'm enjoying it so everybody else does too was celebrated or observant. Enjoy it you know. What the Hell is the best family holidays the entire year yeah faggot? Christmas and I grew up with dressing and my Go-to so you. This is a casserole season as you know moms go to Broccoli casserole and squash casserole does does have a favorite casserole around Thanksgiving well the old green being Castro's hard to supplant at least once a year. You know all the mushroom soup and grilled onions install that stuff but yeah. But I'm really intrigued by the the ones you miss your mom made I. I would be very invested in both those quite frankly. I think you'd be accident. We gotta get you down here for Thanksgiving sometime but of course you're you're on the road. An last night was the big A. W. Show. I think that's going to be a bit of a tradition there at sears centre. Could be wrong. Aw But What a cool you know men wrestling Thanksgiving just goes together? Like peanut butter and Jelly and people say that about you and our subject today. Jerry Jerry. The King Lawler and oddly enough Jiri actually beat you to the company. He comes in in nineteen ninety two. But you'd have never talked about this. You know through. Are Your days working in a territory system. Jerry lawler has been a a mover and shaker. Since at least the seventies was the first time you you had the opportunity to meet Jerry American person for the first Conrad at at a around eighty three or four ish watts flu in Jerry Jarrett and the king from Memphis to shreveport go to our TV and observe because there was a talent exchange in the making and that did happen and You know Lou The lawler and ensure a bitter battle bag with talent what we had what they can do set. Set your watch some just some you know the back and I remember that the bax was the fact that all of our are good looking guys or heels all big ugly guys or maybe faces out. That was an interesting. I remember having a discussion. Those guys but lawler came in would share it and then He said in for a match. So the first match the Jerry lawler not ever broadcast together was a mid south wrestling rematch. Then was taped and the Irish McNeil. Boys Club in Shreveport Do we know it was a one off. That's the first thing we admit I was aware of Jerry. Jerry was very smart about he. MARKETED HIMSELF IN IN MEMPHIS. You still live in the territory as long as he did and not be doing some things right especially promoting yourself and you're in the brand so jerry I had a it was fun during the call where they but I have been aware of him as I said started to say the after magazines so forth. He was very very good about. I'd say manipulating. But maybe that's a the word is applicable here but Encouraging the magazines to do stuff with him and I remember after big trouble. One time for I think he showed lawler. Caller had beaten Andre in Memphis. Our slammed him or something. I don't remember some controversial Jalen I know the. WWW office got very upset about that. So but lawler's always a great entrepreneur. He's still is talk to me a little bit about what his reputation in the business was because I think a lot of our younger listeners. Only we know of Jerry. The King lawler the commentator and sort of the comedy wrestler and the WWF. which you know? He's definitely had more comic relief in this. WBZ phase of his career. The than he did when he was the top guy in Memphis. And if he didn't live in that area or maybe you're not old enough to know you may only know him as a commentator commentator chat with everybody a little bit about who he was as an in ring performer in his heyday. Well I said this before in other Other other entities that people al Qaeda as we do let the when we just did not too long ago in Nashville with Tony Yourself People ask those questions and the one thing about lawler that I say. Is that if you if you look at all. The attributes that he brought to the table still brings to the table and a large degree. If you look at all the attributes that cheery possessed all the skill set. You'll be very hard pressed to find any wrestler that had more check more boxes in the king and check them not just a a fate pistol check with big sharpie check big bowl. He was a hell of baby face. I mean amazing. He was a hell of A. He'll believable understood. Crowd psychology to. Its utmost. Most agree he was he was an excellent promoter and the fact that they made money in that territory for many many years. If you only think about how that territory ended in his final days is not unlike the final days most any territory that had final days but the territory for many many years ears decades as a matter of fact was very successful and Jerry was a learned. A hell promoter there. We know that when he broke his leg or he had various ailments his his managerial abilities. Top talent is as good as anybody ever heard. Then he putting behind the MIC and a lot of research serves are obsessed with either gung of that that pre plan a cute line or to have the get themselves over more specifically and Jerry was never that way with me certainly. I don't recall that he we were working together. I think that's why our team works so well. If you look at all the things he did well Conrad. You're GONNA be hard pressed to find anybody that check more boxes with a bowl sharpie then Jerry lawler. He was that skill so for those that are younger than that. Only see him as you described so accurately as a comedy guy. Then you're you've missed the boat so that stuff from that Memphis territory or he. He was the booker. The top baby face or the top heel was amazing Shakespeare grape production as far as inbuilt of bill. Good psychology and he. He worked with some of the biggest stars in the history of pro wrestling and that came through Memphis at one time or other so his career career unfortunately for some it's been largely forgotten the the early part young baby face years the he'll turn Cetera et cetera dominating. His market that he grew up in. Dan has been largely forgotten but the good news is that it's accessible. W networks. got a bunch of stuff on YouTube. Obviously and then I'm sure sure Jerry's got stuff at his website that that would probably also lend you to be able to see all the things he's done. It's just incredible. I was lucky to have him with my partner. Nice telling this embarrassing. Sometimes you're the star of the day of Teen Pal. You're the Star on the point. Guard my jobs jobs. Get you the ball and shoot those threes. Get Hot roll it. And that's going to look at that deal. He was the star of the team. Put before me and because because it worked no because I'm a benevolent Nice Guy. Jr's Nice Guy Bullshit. I'm not that Nice guy but it worked egocentrically Conrad on read. I didn't want to be a part of a failure and the JR king combination was far from that. Yeah I mean it's still a do other people are talking about. Today is one of the most iconic duos goes and it's just fascinating to me that's just one piece of of Jerry lawler's contribution you know. We talked about his view. Maybe a comedy wrestler to younger fan in base. But I think as I get older I have more appreciation for all the Jerry lawler accomplished and the Mount Rushmore of wrestling discussion is talked about a lot and it feels was like they. Just go to the top guys in the history whether it's rock or stone cold Hulk Hogan Ric flair whoever but Jerry lawler belongs on a mountain somewhere. The likes of Bobby the brain Heenan. Because I don't think there was ever a job whether it was in front of the camera behind the scenes and behind the microphone in the ring. Jerry lawler didn't excel at. I haven't found that yet. I haven't found anything us. You know. He was a great traveling partner to you. Know for me but but you're right you know a more spur spur. More focused more oriented as far as careers concern. Yes he was like. I said if you have a guy that's a great baby fae sometimes. Sometimes there's a little drop-off trained on the transition from that guy being a baby face or and then becoming a villain and then there's another dropped ball sometimes when you have a singles wrestler the becomes tag wrestler or tag because a single stresser law was largely taghrid early on. Because you know. Jackie Jackie Fargo Kinda. Put Him there and he's SPARGO's Kind of you know protege so to speak. But everything's here he did was set at a high level as good as anybody else could find book in that role. And you can't find that very often. And then his magic for all those years behind the MIC. If you look at that that situation are we made sure that our team evolved in one of those Points is the fact that Jerry became when he first got there a lot on the air. Okay remember when we wonder all started ninety three ish. Maybe we January ninety three. Yeah something like that. He was a heel and very annoying. Convincing he'll That knew how to new psychology knew how to get people over and not just physically but mentally in in in TV persona wise. And then as time went on one when Vince lift deter left Aotearoa and became Michigan McMahon then all of a sudden lawler evolve kept devolving and he became more of an ally. Jr's and we were. We were both faces to some degree. Even though we'd say thanks controversial or so time time. Speak our mind from time to time but basically we were there we knew what our role was so he changed again and now with him on raw with a whole new set of farmers his role is still evolving. A little bit her vivus work on over the weekend You know he's he's still evolving. Still Changing. Which reminds you know? We talked about Chris. Jericho doing that. The smart guys figure out how to evolve. Aw stay ahead of the game especially when you're like Jerry who's getting close to seventy right now and he's still works every week he just about. I mean if he's got a weekend off it's rare because he enjoys the wrestling merge much more than enjoys the broadcasting even small venue few hundred people he's is there can post rap. Man Can get the music interesting he enjoys that and why the hell not so I ask you the other day store here I said. How long are you GONNA do? This shit did elegant little places all the stuff travel. It's a travel folks not actually getting their being. They're getting they're getting home he said I'm going to do it as long as they keep booking me I thought that was far. The most level headed honest answer that there was as long as promoters are willing to pay pay him to come do what he can do the ring or wants to do in a ring. Then he's going to continue to do it and he has said Walmart. Quitting I seventy three or seventy five her. Who knows? But it's always ever done so I encourage you do continued for as long as you can and long as healthy. We should mention that the reason we're doing this show today as because tomorrow is his birthday so at some point today or tomorrow Fine Cherry on twitter and wish him a happy seventieth birthday so let's talk about when he goes to the WWF. The first time he actually beats you there. He makes his way up in ninety two and up until this point a sort of ran his promotion Shen sorta rallying the troops the local fans and his market there in Tennessee to Full for him by making fun of the big guys. So you know folk Hogan's the top guy he's going to show you clips of when he bohol coke or fundraising a big angle. He's going to show you where he body slammed Andrei before Hogan ever did or whatever and now after years of sort of villain izing and playing the US against them mentality with the WBF. He joins the company to the point. That MELTZER's headline that week is hell must be frozen over at some point in the past week were you surprised to see. Lawler made his way to New York. Or was it just logical all at some point. Everybody's going to have a stop their New York. If you're good enough and events can make money with you..
