Listen: Chris, Chazz Witherspoon, Donna Stevenson discussed on SI Boxing with Chris Mannix
"Compunction face mattis hi welcome back to the episode of the S. I. Boxing podcast on this episode could get into a big fight coming up that's like going from like a D. minus level opponent disrespected chazz witherspoon to an a level opponent. I don't know that you WANNA do that. Even if you're if you're a talent on the level that is probably not but that it'll be tricky Chris because you wanna fight someone who will give you some rounds that you're not going to blow out immediately because that so I think that that's tricky tricky business but I agree with you in terms of getting rounds in it would be better for him to fight someone you know to fight inbetween fighting array night and then getting the winner of the Josh rematch but I don't know I it would depend on who he fought in the neo disown obviously is paying a decent amount of money for his fights d just one him to get in there with someone ordinary and An- not real really do a whole lot for your business that's another component to it also so he fights for a vacant title he obviously won't have a choice on who he fights next but I wonder if Joshua wins if he because Eddie hearn didn't say that for the of saying it I'm I'm sure there's something behind it Joshua won't want to give up one of the titles but maybe he would go on a different direction if he beats rees than than fighting USIG in his next fight how do you project sick you've watched a lot of guys make that jump from cruiserweight to heavyweight I mean there have been some notable guys manner Holyfield of course okay maybe the greatest that doing it but David Hey recently made the jump with a decent level of success won a piece of the title against blue of were ten fifty in years ago do you look at UCF is having the talent level to become a great heavyweight what what are your what do you think strengths and weaknesses are going to be in this division what's he faces guys is that are are are are close to his level from a skills perspective crissy's fantastic I mean he you know he does things that most guys is size cannot do so so he separates himself from David Hey obviously in that respect but is he going to be a big enough puncher to beat bigger stronger guys who are going to be able to walk him down a little bit and and take his punch that's going to be the biggest thing how successful he is as a heavyweight is going to be determined by how well he takes a shot from a guy who's I don't know thirty forty pounds heavier than him maybe because he was asked after the true sought after the fight how you know how much weight he could add because I think he weighed in at two hundred fifteen sounds so that's that's also tricky business because you don't want to add too much weight and slow yourself down yet you don't want to give away thirty to forty pounds against everyone that you fight and in the case of Andy were wheezy might give away fifty pounds Or if Andy Reid has a bad training camp seventy pounds but the point is you know you don't want to be too small Paul because he doesn't Deontay wilder of course was two hundred nine pounds for one of his heavyweight title fights but he's also arguably the biggest puncher in boxing so he can get away with that whereas USA cannot yeah one thing about and I had this conversation with Abel Sanchez who is the trainer for among others Gassiev who lost a convincingly too sick in the that will block super series final he said that is not going to be kind of an adventure holy field type cruiserweight heavyweight holyfield remember you know one a lot of his fights at heavyweight by being aggressor like even though he wasn't the biggest guys he was a aggressive puncher whereas usig his strength is kind of what Loma Chanko strength was and I'm not saying that because they've both been trained by Loma cheng-kuo learn I've decorated Olympic pedigrees but they they set traps they try to make you do things you don't want to do and what they want you to do so if he can do that at heavyweight eight I think you'll be more successful but of course the margin for error is is much smaller at heavyweight if you make a mistake out there and get caught with something you're GonNa get dropped by some of these bigger punches like a wilder Joshua maybe even if it comes to that like he's got to be careful with with what he does out there but I do is the skills he's he's clearly incredibly talented and I think he has the skills if you can have the Chin to be successful in that heavyweight division moving forward all right let's talk about the offer lack of a better phrase archer better behave we've got a piece of light heavyweight title he is taking on Olexander Vaud sick for his piece of the light heavyweights taking place in Philadelphia on Friday catch that on ESPN this is a great fight Keith between two guys that are both big punchers better be have probably the biggest her in his division of one of the punchers in all the boxing and vodka who is trained by Teddy Atlas WHO's coming off a decisive win two fights ago against the Donna Stevenson has tremendous talent is a tremendous boxer this to me is a kind of a coin flip type of fight how do you see it it's a class kickboxer versus puncher type of matchup Chris in the sense that you know Vostok is has fourteen knock east seventeen in own as fourteen knockout so he's knocked out more than eighty percent of his opponent hits as well but he's clearly the inferior puncher in this fight I mean artur better be ev is a massive puncher at one of the biggest punchers in boxing we're right up there I think wilders the biggest puncher in boxing but but but better be ever certainly up there devastating with his right hand a little more limited in terms of boxing skill than us stick and that's going to be what what Vostok has to do to win the fight that's his path to victory here. He has to box the way that he did against obviously Donna Stevenson he's a southpaw and better be right handed but he has the box carefully and smartly against better be of in a similar way to the way that he did against Donna Stevens he was down on two of the three scorecards going into the eleventh round of the Fight Against Stevenson although I think he had fared better than that to that point but he he got caught in the tenth round by Stevenson so that was one laps where he got caught on the side of a head of his head with the left hand in it knocked him into the ropes but he was able to hold a little bit and survived that trouble got to the eleventh round and then was able to knockout Stevenson unfortunately Stevenson suffered some what turned out to be brain damage thankfully thankfully but You know I think he has to fight a very disciplined fight to win bostick because you know anytime you make a mistake against better be Evan this the thing that Teddy Atlas was saying yesterday down Philadelphia you have zero margin for error whatsoever you make one mistake against this guy and he's GonNa Knock you out so I think bostick will fight a smart fight he's not going to stand in front of better blyleven trade with him because that's a fight he can't win ESPN is respect of course but I think they'll go about it in a very careful way I guess is the best way to say but as you said Chris this is this is one of the best fights that can be made in in the light heavyweight division for shore it's one of the better fights that's been made for this year and it has flown under the radar a little bit it's on a Friday night I don't know if that has anything to do with is it but you know they had to do that for scheduling purposes because he espn has college football on Saturday night this was the the date that they could do the fight on but yeah and it's in a it's in Philadelphia which has a rich history and boxing but you know why that fight isn't Philadelphia's anyone's guess you know they're they're trying their best is to sell tickets down there but I don't know that there was a better spot for it necessarily but it's a good fight it's a really good fight I don't think it's getting quite the attention that it deserves but I think it's unfold as a as a very interesting competitive fight in the ring I dunno where you would put that fight and Celtic it's one of those guys August go overseas and you don't want to do that if your top rank and ESPN you'll lose the value of putting on a fight like this in in prime time I do I do love the he got knocked out but he knocked better be down in that fight so better be shown that he's he can hit for sure but he can also be hit and be hurt in those type situation I'm looking forward to to that fight and you know more than anything that division not to borrow a phrase from our friend Deontay wilder that division needs one face one name like there needs to be an undisputed champion of that division I think that's the only way that a fighter at one seventy five right now can really move the needle because you have some really good fighter some great talents Kovolev is the most well known one seventy five but he might be the fourth most talented guy that list if you look at at better be Vaas tick and to meet your beaver who won this past weekend in Chicago as well so you've got some talent there but these guys all got fight each other I mean they should use what do sick accomplished at cruiserweight as an example I mean how many people knew was like two years ago I don't know that many actually did all of a sudden he becomes the undisputed champion he goes and fights Tony Bell you he wins that by knockout now everybody's talking about him as the next big thing to come on in the heavyweight division he had nine thousand fans in in Chicago Keith and those fans were there to see who sick that was an entirely pro USA crowd that gathered in Chicago. I don't know if it's if you can duplicate it at light heavyweight but I do the only way you can he early you can have a shot at doing it so the winner of this better be ev and Vostok fight I think has to turn around by middle of next year and but maybe if you're undisputed at light heavyweight maybe then you can get Kello interested if can elevates Kovalyov and somebody one of these guys comes around and becomes undisputed light everywhe- Chris I think that really depends on how the fight goes against cove eleven how he reacts to punches against a bigger a bigger guy in that division in that fight but I just going back to some thing you said earlier crooked I just wanted to To comment on on how better be have was hurt in the fight against Callum Johnson I think that happened more than anything because he got careless does he had already knocked down column Johnson and then heard him again and I think he was a little reckless when he went in for the finish and he did get clipped with a good left hook that put him down I think it was in the second round of the and maybe won't get as careless when he's trying to either hurt or finish Vostok if he gets that opportunity in the fight Friday night but as it pertains to getting clarity in the light heavyweight division Chris I mean you need an undisputed champion I don't know how that's going to happen entirely because again it depends what happens for second between canal and Kovalyov and Kovalev you know wins obviously is in a great position but then he see they might fight again after that so that might eliminate the ability for a unification fight because Cannella would have the option of getting a rematch in that case but if Cannella wins you don't know if he's GonNa stay at light heavyweight at a certain point you're biting off more than you can chew if you're a five foot all goes he needs to fight someone because he can't continue making optional defenses against guys that no one has either heard of or cares about and expect but you know a a relatively mundane defense back in March and this fight was pretty uneventful and unremarkable except for the sixth round knock down so he needs to do something here to get a unification fight."
