Listen: Joe Biden, Houlihan Castro, Chris Matthews discussed on The 11th Hour with Brian Williams
"Thanks to Lawrence take a welcome to all those viewers joining us at the conclusion of the debate good evening from our NBC News Headquarters in New York Brian Williams along with Nicole Wallace the third the Democratic primary debate has just wrapped up at Houston Texas Southern University among the largest historically black colleges and universities in our nation tonight's was the first debate as you know with this crowded election cycle in which all ten top contenders shared one stage the man it meant that front and Center were Joe Auden Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders finally facing off for the first time an showdown on the most important issue to Democratic voters among the most divisive a divisive topics of the evening in fact was healthcare more on that in a moment but first the night got underway with Senator Comma Harris interest speaking directly to one viewer. Here's what you don't get. What you don't get is that the American people are so much better than this and we know that the vast majority of us have so much more in common than what separates US regardless of our race where we live are the party with which were registered to vote and I plan on focusing on our common issues are common hopes and desires and in that way unifying our country winning this election and turning turning the page for America and now president trump you can go back to watching Fox News at the center of the stage tonight the front runner and the biggest target of the evening Joe Biden at one point Houlihan Castro appeared to take a swipe at Biden over what Ki- seemed to regard as some sort of senior moment the difference between what I support and what you support Vice President Biden is that you require them to opt in and I would not require them to opt in they would automatically glee be enrolled. They wouldn't have to buy in. That's a big difference because Barack Obama's vision was not to leave ten million people uncovered wanted. Every single person in this country covered my plan would do that. Your plan do not have to buy in do not have to buy. You just said that. He just said that two minutes ago. You just said two minutes ago that they would have Tamiami. You said they would have to buy qualifier forgetting what you what you said just two minutes ago. I can't believe that you said two minutes ago that they had to buy in and now you're saying they don't have to but you're forgetting that may look grandmother who adds no money automatically so you heard the crowd react in real time controversial moment for sure. It'll be interesting to find what's. Sanders said two Biden there between the two men but the accusation from Castro practically calls out for a fact check. It appears that in fact Biden did not say that Americans would quote have to buy into his healthcare policy. Here's what he did say. My health care plan does significantly cut the cost of it launched out of pocket payment. You'll pay a thousand dollars. You'd be able to get into anyone who can't afford it gets automatically enrolled in in the Medicare type option. We have a senator but guess what of one hundred and sixty million people who liked their health care now they can keep it if they don't like it they can leave infighting was the topic on stage and it called about it brought about calls for unity and civility with Mayor Pete leading the charge. This is why debates are becoming on watchable reminds everybody of what they cannot stand about. Washington wearing points against each other can each other and telling each other that your plan your plan look we all that's called the Democratic primary election on Alexa. That's what we're here for election but a house divided cannot stand so so airing a little bit of the laundry publicly on stage tonight. It was interesting. It was as if someone might have told them prior to this event. Here's here's the deal Obama good trump bath and I don't know who that is of the Democratic Party but if you had to stick one headline on this night eight I think we we show the moment that Hulan Castro was the skunk at the Garden Party. I don't think there's an appetite. I think if Joe Biden isn't the nominee if he falls from what have been months and months of months of an enduring lead. This race is not that fluid at the top and I don't think anything that happened tonight. We'll move Joe Biden Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren out of those top three spots. I think the only thing if you're looking for some sort of action or or anyone that could be be in motion after tonight. I think better work who found his voice after the massacre in our past so he still has that voice. He's still spoke with clarity. He he seems to have gained some confidence between sort of matching those moments he he tends to you salty language. I work for John McCain so I find that familiar and refreshing. Some people might not like it still has that sort of clarity that he really showcased after El Paso he had some moments but whether it jostles him out of sort of the bottom of that top ten I don't know and I think pe- Buddha judge was very much on brand tonight. So whoever emerges as the nominee who buddha judge will be named at a very early stage as someone who will be in his cabinet because he's just so talented in so likable. Let's go to our man in Houston Texas Chris Matthews in the Spin Room adjacent to the venue tonight Chris. What was the view from their home. Well you know I thought I agree with everything to call said I thought that the evening began with calls for unity a very strong call by Amy Klobuchar for unity. I'm not intending to be president for half the American people but before all the American people there was a pushback against hard ideology of the Democratic Left that was a theme for a while but then I thought some of the strong ideologues that people have strong agendas like Warren and Bernie Sanders were very clear where they stand certainly medicare for all no more private insurance absolute position on that Bernie Ernie in her competed on paying off all the student loans and then also in an ideological sort of purity tests Beta came along and said he's going to not just buyback back automatic weapons the semi automatic assault rifles but demand that they sell them back. I don't know where you get away with that. I noticed calmly talk about an executive order. This'll be extraordinary Harry ruling by the Supreme Court that would allow a president use executive orders to demand the end of ownership by automatic weapons semiautomatic assault assault weapons. I think these are three or four cases of extreme ideological positions but generally I thought there was a pushback on that stage against a hard left. I heard heard a lot of calls for unity. I thought it was a lot more pushback on all out healthcare Medicare for all without any health insurance from the private sector after I thought there was a lot of pushback did that wasn't there before and on border issues fascinating. 's last time around. I think it was to debate cigar. One debate and go people talking about certainly Castro was about decriminalizing illegal border crossings none of that tonight very careful and by the way I'm glad you scored it against Castro and the issue shoe up attempted to blame the guy having Alzheimer's. I think that was a cheap shot. The fact is he got his facts wrong and in terms of competency he was the one that risk is positions. You're not by Chris. Matthews I can't help but notice Senator Klobuchar over your right shoulder and we will come as we speak we will come back to you are frequent when viewers know the drill when Chris gets a candidate wired up and ready to go we'll go to Chris in Houston with us here members of our family and our studio Claire mccaskill former the Democratic senator from the great state of Missouri Eugene Robinson Pulitzer Prize winning columnist for the Washington Post and joy reed the host of am joy weekends here on Msnbc you see at the big board tonight our national correspondent. Steve Kornacki good evening and welcome to you all senator by dint of your title. We're going to begin with you. work kings or Queens made or destroyed on that stage tonight. What's your headline. I think Castro's hurt I think his he he he. He was trying to swing for the fences. People kept talking about the tension between Warren and Biden the tension. I felt on that stage. Where for the bottom five this was their lack really in some ways their last moment to make a lasting impression to try to get in to the it kind of debate that will probably move the needle some down the line. I'm not sure anything tonight. move the needle except I think Castro offended offended people the way he did that and it won't surprise me if it helps. Biden I totally agree with Clemson for long stretches. The debate to me seem like Biden versus. The fringes Biden versus the out and they were trying to get some sort of purchase. I think thank you understate the damage. That Castro did to himself tonight. you know he lost a lot of support. If he had a lot of support to lose he didn't yet a little support. I I think I think it's basically over you know he. He took a shot. It was it was not a good shot and it and it just really went over like a liberal loon. It was that was that was a bad bad moment for him on. I thought Cory Booker at times sort of looked looked wise and presidential and he sees these big presents himself in a in a in a way that you could sort of imagine an internal election. I think he might have done himself some good tonight. In the debate there are a number of issues. He wasn't pressed on it might have been pressed on they'd be he will be in future debates dates other than that. I didn't see a lot of movement joy. Reid well. You know it's interesting what you said and we actually the senator and I watched the debate together. We should camera that would have been a place to be. We had some fun. They'd have a great time microphone because you running campaigns. You know the likability argument in politics gets thrown at women but when you're running a campaign just having worked on the press and a couple you have to always remember who is likable couple among your opponents in wider likeable and I think that going after Biden is smart in the sense that he is at the top and if you WANNA get top eventually take him on but you have to remember people like Joe Biden Right. Joe Pine is not Donald Trump. WHO's an unlikable figure to most Americans people like Joe Biden. They may not know enough about Joe Biden to know the dings in his the past and when they find them out they may be disappointed but fundamentally Democrats like him and so if you go away and then the other piece Joy Democrats are fundamentally horrified and terrified and totally turned off by criticism of him he emerges the non was the same reason that they're turned off criticism of President Obama there was just an event the last it's not with a lot of young progressive activists who very critical of specific things about President Obama but if you were to come for President Obama they would defend him because President Obama is on their side fundamentally and so I think when you're trying to take out a front runner you don't do it in a way that presumes that people don't like this person that you can go after them in that harsh but I think that that was too harsh on his part the other second tier Kennedy's. I thought better had a great night. This was his night estimates so far because now I can see in him the confidence of not really necessarily carrying if he wins. He just wants to send a message that I think is authentic. Authentic tonight and my last is at warrant. No one touched her and she was strong on foreign policy. She sent a coherent on everything she said about. She had a great night. Does she get enough airtime. No I think no one did it's still two people the same number of people as the other debate. I the go-to but no-one nobody said a word about Senator Harris and I thought she had a great degree night. Attack on trump is exactly exactly yeah. Democrats polls want so that was a mistake I learned down by the way had a good night to did dairies strong Chris Matthews honor and distinction of taking us over the top of the hour normally the eleventh hour tonight our special post post debate coverage and Chris is standing by with the first of our special guest tonight Chris. Thank you hopefully with some crossover appeal until eleven o'clock. I'll be closer than I sent her. Thank you start by setting kind of a keynote you talked about.."
