Barr says there were serious irregularities at the Manhattan correctional center were Jeffrey up steam killed himself over the weekend Washington post national security reporter Matt zepa tau ski joins us Matt you've been looking into how I've seen was being monitored before his death what have you learned so far yeah we'll bar didn't say what irregularities he's referring to but we know of a couple of the probably the most glaring is dead at the scene should have been monitored every thirty minutes because he was in the special housing unit at the federal jail in Manhattan but he hadn't been checked on in several hours that process had apparently broken down he also should have had a cell mate he had come off suicide watch about a week earlier and should have had a cell mate but his cell mate left on Friday in the jail had not reassigned one to which is a violation of protocol so those released to irregularities that bar might have been referring to as far as you can tell Matt where the conditions abstain was were being it was being held in where they unusual for the MCC well that does two things are certainly unusual now that he would be held in the special housing unit is not unusual you know very high profile in may and you would want to give him sort of special consideration to make sure that he was safe bowl from himself and both been from other inmates by a one sort of following the normal things they do in the special housing unit mean when you're in the special housing unit someone is supposed to be coming by laying eyes on your checking on you every thirty minutes that wasn't happening so it was pretty unusual that that he wasn't being monitored as closely the **** out of you talked a bit about it but what what's the E. M. C. C.'s track record overall and his track record I mean look and they have they have a ton of experience handling high profile inmates they successfully housed hell trouble while he went through a weeks long trial and everyone knows his history with escaping may have had escapes in the past but it is generally regarded as a pretty secure facility that is no stranger to holding high profile inmates no union officials tell us though that staffing has really been an issue in the last two to three years and in fact all the officers who were on duty in the special housing unit war on overtime shifts one of them in a mandatory overtime shifts meeting his managers made him stick around and the other on a voluntary one but his fourth or fifth that week so over work has been an issue but the facility is equipped to deal with high profile inmates to what happened here was a relapse thank you that's Washington post national security reporter Matt sat Pataki three thirty four on the afternoon roundup the White House today unveiled new rules that could prevent immigrants from getting green cards if they use programs like Medicaid or food stamps politico immigration reporter Ted Hesson is on our news line so Ted how will these new rules work well this is a sweeping new regulation that first of all price to the legal immigration system may you know not the legal immigration which is a frequent target of of president trump and under this it looks at whether any incoming immigrant would be likely to receive public benefits or what's currently receiving certain public benefits if they were they could potentially be disqualified for receiving a green card or even for getting a visa to come to the U. S. you outlined the changes has the administration provided some reasoning behind the new rules you know the administration has said this is really about showing that an immigrant is self sufficient that if they're going to come to this country that they're not going to become a burden on taxpayers and they're going to be able to hold their own and actually had a briefing at the White House today acting USCIS director Ken Cuccinelli who's a top immigration official within the trump administration really stressed that message instead it's about self sufficiency and people at in his words being able to stand on their own two feet Ted immigration advocates there already vowing to fight these rules that's right I mean almost instantly there were several groups saying that they plan to file lawsuits over this one is a group that represents immigrants out the Los Angeles area and saying that you know this regulation is essentially pushing people away from the financial services that they need and beyond even the benefits that are listed in the regulation the groups are saying that there's a broader chilling affected that immigrant families will be less likely to go and use any kind of public benefit because they're going to be nervous that it's going to jeopardize getting a green card in the future it'll be another court battle to look out for political immigration reporter Ted has been on our news line thank you thank you for having me three thirty six on the WCBS afternoon roundup were you one of the millions his identity may have been compromised in the recent breach the one of the millions who trust their identity protection to LifeLock life like now includes the power of Norton for more protection LifeLock.
