David, Five, Ten Million Dollars discussed on The Tim Ferriss Show

Philanthropy as you put as call you clark. Kent in a suit and tie. You've done a lot of these many things that you've done that you would put in. The category of people plan thrapy. What are you proudest of. What holds a particularly strong foothold in your heart. Is there anything that really stands out for you. I would say answer a question a moment but when my mother did pass away i went through oliver papers. And she has scrapbooks of all my patriotic philanthropy things and none of the scrapbooks. None of the articles about carlisle. She was really interested in what i had done. She called me that. When i started giving away money to kind. Give back to the country. When i call patriotic three. She was extremely proud. And that's where she collected all the articles about that not so much carl success. Oh the interesting thing about patriotic philanthropy is. It's a relatively small part of my philanthropy. Maybe five to ten percent but it gets ninety nine percent of the attention for whatever reason because people aren't doing it much so if i give a large amount of money to a cancer center a cancer hospital you know that's a good thing that's modest compared to what bill gates other famous cancer landscapers for doing but if i give ten million dollars to keep the washington monument and a in reasonable shape that gets an enormous amount of attention. Maybe it should. Maybe it shouldn't. But i just i've been surprised. At how many how much attention guessing. How few other people seem to want to do it. But i tried to convince a lot of people giving pledge and other places that they should do. They are a lot richer than me. And many of them to do the same things but doesn't seem to attract as much attention. Maybe because people think the government should be doing this. I don't know but mother used to watch it and so one time i might. I decided that. One of the lincoln memorial which was such a famous art of our history. I thought it needed some repair and Was kind of run down a bit in the park service. Unruly have the money to do everything. So i set out to fix it. And they said that's announce it in front of the lincoln memorial. I said okay. So we have announced with their and soon as we're doing it covered on c. Span live it starts to snow so i'm sitting there and the snow and i get a call my cell phones from my mother. She's watching c. span. She's david put your hat on it. Snow ink okay. So your mother's are always paying attention you know so. I put my hat on anyway. I have enjoyed this Fixing the monuments preserving documents like the magna. Carta i've historic is probably one of the better american collections of historic american books and ultimately. I'll give these things away and the places that seem appropriate. I like putting him on display in the reason. I put him on display. Is that if you look at a computer. Slide of the magna carta or if you read a computer slide of the wash monument doesn't have the same impact as visiting the human brain still gets much more out of visiting something you prepare for. You learn more. When you're there you may learn more afterwards. So i'm trying to get people to learn more about our country's history and the reason is this. If you wanna have a good democracy you have to have an informed citizenry. That's what the founding fathers believed informed. Citizenry will lead to a better democracy right now. We don't teach civics very much in our country's history and we don't teach in our country schools and we don't teach very much about american history congratulate for almost any college united states without having to take an american history course so now situation is such a bad that recently in a survey two thirds of americans couldn't even name the three branches the federal government and while ninety one percent of people apply for citizenship test. This country can pass the basic civic status in forty nine hundred fifty states. Recently the majority of citizens couldn't pass basic citizenship. Test that you have to take to be a citizen so we should do a better job of informing our citizens. And that's why some of the things i do is designed to kind of get people educated about this a little bit more than maybe they otherwise would be if you could get a message a quote a word and image anything out to billions of people. Metaphorically speaking on a huge billboard could be anything. What might you put on that billboard. Give back to your country do something that makes the world a better place in your country a better place. Honor your parents. Your reputation is all you really carry around with you. It takes a lifetime to build a reputation and five minutes to destroy it. So don't do anything to destroy your reputation but do things don't honor your children your parents and yourself and give back to the country which you presumably think is the best country in the world or you wouldn't be here really enjoyed this david.
