Thanks for taking the time to join us on this Friday as we take a look at some of the day's top stories. President Trump is dining with his top advisors says he remains in Washington during a partial government shutdown. Trump went to vice president Mike Pence's residents and the pair being joined by the incoming chief of staff. Mick Mulvaney, and adviser Jared Kushner, president called off a Florida vacation to stay in Washington because of the shutdown more members of the Central American migrant caravan are being admitted into the US they've been waiting in Tijuana for more than a month because of a backlog of hopeful asylum seekers coming up good news for savers you can now put more in your 4._0._1._K or IRA account. I'm herb Weisbaum. With a new numbers for twenty nineteen eighteen has certainly been a memorable year in politics ABC's. Karen Travers is. Posted at the White House every day, and she looks back on the air with ABC's, Sherry Preston foul mentioned a couple of things, you know, the male bomber the midterms Jamal kashogi the Russia probe. However, still was probably the one that dominated the news. The most the Robert Mueller investigation. Don't you think I think it certainly has loomed? The most large here at the White House and a lot of that Sherry is driven by the president's own could say obsession with it. It's the president tweeting about it almost every day. It's the president who talks about it so much over the last year, you'll have White House officials who criticized the media for coverage, and you have to say to them, you know, the president drives the narrative, and when he spends an hour in the morning, slamming the Muller probe as a witch hunt and going after Muller personally, you have to cover it. And it shows how much it's on his mind for every day. The start of the day to the end of the day. This has been the most consistent thing that he has tweeted about the Brad Kavanagh hearings, and what happened with Brett cabin on the confirmation followed by. The midterms after that with a record number of women and younger people being elected into the house of representatives. Is there a correlation there September and October were just such an emotional time across the country as the midterms were heating up, and then this bombshell eleventh-hour bombshell about Brad Kavanagh? It seemed like his nomination was smooth sailing Justice Kennedy announced his retirement, the president light Cavanaugh and everything was looking great. And then professor Christine Blasi Ford publicly accused Cavanaugh of assaulting her when they were high school students at a party, he denied it. But that emotional hearing when they both made appearances back to back on Capitol Hill that was all the entire country was talking about and everybody in this town was saying this is going to be a big issue for voters in the midterms. Well, it did matter in the Senate there were several Democrats from red states states, the president one in two thousand sixteen who lost the re election and had voted against Cavanaugh. Was it the only thing? No. There are a lot of other factors, of course. But it was a big thing. The president was campaigning on in those states. But of course, in the house, it was a Blue Wave and Democrats picked up forty seats to take control of the house and a lot of that was driven by women voters. Suburban voters were very turned off by all of the nastiness in Washington. And another thing that happened. This year was was the death of not only George H W Bush, but also John McCain President Trump was at one he was not at the other. But yet his name loomed large over both of those as well where people kind of look back and said, oh, I remember when we used to not get along. But we at least not got along, you know, A and could go to dinner parties together the old days. Everybody's for even the moments before President Trump and the first lady arrived at the funeral for George H W Bush here in Washington, you had the Obamas. Chatting with the pences the Clintons talking to the Cheney's the Biden's talking to the pens, and it was just this VIP section at the cathedral. Everybody who kinda like say, they they get. Get it. They get how Washington works disagree on everything. But there's a different level when it comes to you know, you've been there you've been the one in the room making those decisions that club. It's a very exclusive club. Then President Trump comes in and doesn't make any small talk. And it's very awkward, and you kind of see the tension there just shows he just doesn't fit into that exclusive club that he's a part of. And we'll be a part.
