Listen: Joe Joe Biden, Ted Cruz Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren discussed on The Chuck ToddCast: Meet the Press
"Hello from Washington. I'm Chuck Todd and this is the Chuck Todd cast that. We've only got good news for two twenty twenty candidates. NBC News Wall Street Journal poll has the first big poll after the third debate and it shows a couple of things one it shows that Joe Joe Biden still holding strong. He actually picked up support from July Survey Elizabeth Warren. She's also got voters fired up and if anything she grew even faster than Joe Biden President Trump says he has an Iran strategy but the big question is what will the public believe and later in the shelby joined by journalist and author Gary Graff who will discuss his new book the only the plane in the sky and oral history nine eleven and we'll discuss how the country has changed since then including many things about the press and the presidency but but I I'm talking with Republican strategist Michael Steele and NBC Contributor Ruth Marcus of The Washington Post welcome to you both all right. We get to talk some raw politics a little bit we had the big. NBC News Wall Street Journal poll out as we like to say there are a lot of good polls out there but we think are better than most and the big thing that our pollsters did is we took our combined first and second choice the big the big numbers were this and let's start first with and I'll start with you ruth. I'm I'm guessing you weren't surprised at Biden was still ahead. Were you surprised that both Biden and worn grew in our poll. I don't think I was surprised by that because I think they both had the room to grow and in some ways the incentives from their constituencies to grow right Biden is plugging away and he had a a terrible first debate but he but that didn't seem to hurt him in the polls and so he keeps going steady and attract and none of the voters who who are attracted to Biden seem to be consultant doubling if anybody else yeah there's no flirtation going on Dayton one guy and so they're going steady. More people are trying to go steady with that guy and then we're sorting. September and I don't think we thought the sorting would begin September right right and then on Elizabeth Warren before we get to the sorting she is outperforming her main rival Bernie Sanders and so there's room for both of them to grow until they need take each other on the sorting a really interesting question. I have to say in September of Nineteen Michael Steele. I didn't expect to only have essentially candidates growing three if you can injure gang wpro but I'm saying to candidates everybody else decreasing. Let me give you a fun little stat. I put together if you take our July survey the combined warned Biden was forty five and the combined signed. Everybody else was forty-five right this time the combined worn by fifty six combined everyone else's forty-one right and I I come at this as kind of with a similar thought but precisely the opposite direction from what Roose said. I think that this reflects the fundamental weakness Bernie Sanders Bernie Sanders Concept Yeah Bernie Sanders has BECO- problem problem better rourke was incredibly appealing running against Ted Cruz Bernie Sanders as the only Credible Alternative Hillary Clinton and sixteen was more appealing feeling than he otherwise willing and chafee never credibility the metric system is an intriguing concept but no I mean this is this is he went deep against Clinton. He's the only one who did did she had high negatives within the party he came into this with name recognition organization and a sense of grievance from sixteen osteen and that none of that is a very good reason to run for president in twenty twenty. You'VE GOT Warren making similar ideological arguments and Bernie Sanders looks and sounds like Abe Simpson yelling at the cloud well. It's funny you say this and the que- There's been this question of where does the Bernie if you believe that Bernie continues to shrink. I'm not sure I believe that but if you fall into this theory than in the question's going to be okay. Where does the Bernie vote go now. Our pollsters wanted to highlight something ruth. The Bernie Vote is interesting. He gets fourteen percent overall among those aged eighteen to thirty four. He's at thirty-three. He's the leading person among that age group. He's the next the second place is worn at twenty-five among thirty five to forty nine so essentially a older millennials in very young genetics. He's at seventeen third-place already by the time you get to at the age of fifty he's three percent among fifty to sixty four and two percent amongst sixty five plus what our pollsters were saying. Bernie is actually overrated in our poll that they believe his fourteen percent is really a single digit number because eighteen to thirty four never turns out right and and to the extent they we do turn out those warring numbers suggests that when my goal saying is totally accurate that they could shift or are they. Bernier bust how many of Mr Right either way. It's good for the two leading contenders right status. I mean the the answer to that. Question is better for one the other right if they're Bernier bust and that's good for Biden if there if some of them some significant number of them are switchable yes it was with Warren which seems more likely to me well. I'll tell you this. I'm some therefore chunk of that. Enjoy this and I hate to be a stereotype here but there's a fourth Canada senator who got double digits among eighteen to thirty four year olds in our poll obviously Biden Warren and Sanders. Who Do you think that fourth candidate was giving away Free Money Andrew Yang. He's sitting eleven among that crew. He's at one percent with fifty right by the way but he's it. It is interesting wh who resonates where and this is a reminder the two true social media the candidates are young and sanders right and you've also got the universal in a youth without liberalism is heartless age with conservativism brainless than the more left-leaning candidate does is better with younger people plus you know older people remember the Cold War. They remember socialism as the enemy they have an ideological disinclination to like free money so so even though they're getting it from free money if we believe this is a two person race and I wanted before we what we're all hesitant at saying it not the only nine percent on our poll said that they had made up their mind so in the Democratic primary so we should note that although usually highlight that when you you really they don't believe it but you say it anyway because we know that for the most part we're probably looking at how this things breaking down but what could we all think something else is. What could that be. What are we what. What are we waiting to see before we come to the conclusion all right? We're sorting between Biden more so it's a two person race for now but I noticed that nine percent number and I think I think that's really important and also we know first of all. We're living in a world where anything can happen and certainly in Biden world in particular anything think happen. He could say something that is he could have another really terrible debate performance. He say something that is really problematic because because things come out of Joe Biden's if that is how we are going to cover Joe Biden is an inevitable that this happens you see I mean you know something. My point is this. If you're sitting there looking for moments were Joe. Biden is out of touch out of sync or out of time. You can always find them. If you choose to your newspaper Ruth did something fascinating to me the initial headline over the Dan Balls analysis piece you aware this not not exactly but the initial headline was basically Biden had a good night and then the analysis kicked in from Msnbc and some other liberal leaning outlets who all were like doc only God he were record playing it up and all that what would happen was it was just watching the twitter version of Biden rate which is just only do the gaff and yeah it was good but if you watch the first forty five minutes you came away with going. Let's get some questions that she won't answer to it. I watched it from soup to nuts and thought boy. Biden did what he you needed to do. If you only watch clips you believed Biden right at the sun and the Washington Post chain changed your headline by Friday afternoon on the same balls else piece to say Biden headline wasn't Dan's analysis it was sort of like Biden survives despite verbal gaffes and this is the genius of trump trump trump never had a great debate in the Republican primaries but he always had a good moment he always had the p- the coverage was always very good of trump after these debates kind kinda converse of that down Fox okay and Sean Hannity Land and which is what matters to our primary voters. and I think that that look if you're covering the race from specific prism if you're looking for Al Gore to tell ally if you're looking for George Bush Confu get confused. You're GONNA find it. That's my point point and if you're covering Joe Biden from the prism of the only thing that doom som is a spectacular senior moment a Rick Perry oops moment on national national television. You're probably gonNA find so ruth. This is very interesting. The Biden team clearly complaining about their press corps that it's too young. They live on twitter too much. Here's the thing I think correct and I think they look ridiculous complaining about it. I think they can both be accurate and like there's a better way to. There's a better better way to handle this. How about Chopin Interviews and actually put yourself out there. They're high both worn by nerve being hidden from from actual questions right and when you make a mistake like you've conflated a story about a war hero. Don't say something like details. Don't matter her 'CAUSE I. I know we're living in the age of trump and I'm sorry I heard that and I thought details do matter and that's not an explanation. How about I it should have been more precise and and move on but I want to say something about the sorting and the two person race. You have a lot of people here who are workers at this point right. They're running in case. It's a front runner stumbles. If you're not in the race twenty two candidates in this race who essentially got in solely believing the following following believing of the following that Elizabeth Warren was too liberal to be the nominee and Joe Biden was tool and it turns out that all these other alternatives are just not good enough off well. We'll see and I think that the one of the fascinating things are spent a lot of time thinking about how this sorted so quickly why were in sorting September and I think it may be that huge size size. We did deal with a very large Republican field but that seemed to work itself out by everybody got their week. You know you'd Rubio Week and doing doing that. Am I think it's the paradox of this is at the enormous size of it has just sucked up any oxygen that any of them could have gotten an allowed these two others to the certainly certainly squeeze well. I also think that up until this debate with amy cloche our most of them had pretty lousy strategies all of these one one per one percent or one digit. Single candidates. were running to the left. The left is the crowded part of this field. If your banking on Joe Biden Collapse for whatever reason Don Delaney gone out us he ran for president and what is John Hickam.."
