Listen: Vitamin D Deficiency, Vitamin D Deficiency Agency, WWF discussed on Absurd Hypotheticals
"Ettelaat definitely spend just full days. Never going outside. Yeah which is mainly. We're pretty sad people but like yeah you know just in general. It's the kind of makes you thank you know R- anyway has kind of what I had. Things don't change much as long as you can live so aw live so Chris what would you do so I decided to look at Sunday because obviously if you're not going outside you're not getting sunlight and the main thing you get from. Sunlight is vitamin D so actually two types of Vitamin D. They're both hard to pronounce. So there's one called Arrigo Callous Farrell and colleague cal was sopher all so these in the chat and we can pronounce and try and pronounce them. Better Yeah I WANNA try those share. Hold on let's do this. They both have the same ending to the word. Ah Yeah Agriculture for all. Yeah do you okay. And Kholokov's roll. Call the counselor throw sterling so much I know they're they're they're it's okay. I'M GONNA use today the version of these which is vitamin D to Vitamin D. Three hold on one. I don't know is vitamin D to by the doctor sewed mighty sorry just ignore made Eh. I found it I found it. Google told me German researcher Adolf Windows. I discovered three forms of Vitamin D.. which he called D One d two and d three? It was later learned that the vitamin Ataman D one was a mixture of compound rather than a pure vitamin D products. The term D one is no longer used more. You know so anyway pretty much. That's the main way we get vitamin D is from sunlight and the sun actually doesn't have vitamin D in it. What happens is that our skin has something called seven seven dehydrate cholesterol so like when? UV be late hits that there's like a reaction that happens in that creates vitamin D three and then sunlight has UV light in it. So if we don't go outside we don't get UV light which means no vitamin D. So first question was just like could you dislike stand in a greenhouse and would that solve your problem would vitamin D and The answer is no because windows. Actually block most of the V.. Light in sunlight. So that's not God damn windows. Yeah I know ruin everything so I found a stat saying that forty percent of American adults right now are actually vitamin indeed efficient. Just like in general right now with their option to go outside. Well wow wait wait. Wait a big fun of Vitamin D Deficiency Agency. Yeah so not great and some of the symptoms of vitamin D deficiency our Something called rickets. which is like a condition that impedes heeds growth in children? You get bone issues so like a weak bones or like deformities. He and muscle weakness and also depression. So it's not like fatal but it's not great man. I hope my bones are on brittle I hate. I hate diseases. That are like the sentiments. Like you you get you know your weak bones. Yeah until you never. You can't feel that your bones are like one step away from us being so I wanted to figure out. Like how much vitamin D do. We actually need There's there's an article from Creighton University Medical Center which recommends hundred micrograms per day Vitamin D. So I start looking at alternative her native ways to get vitamin D. Obviously there's other ways than just the sunlight so right now. A lot of our foods are actually fortified with Vitamin D. So late it's added later in the process of just making the food so like examples of this are milk and cereal have fortified vitamin D in them but there are very few foods that actually naturally have vitamin D.. In them but there are some so. The first thing I looked at was fish. Fish actually have a small amount of vitamin D but the main fish product. It has lagged. A very decent amount is cod liver. Oil Look Yeah so one teaspoon of cod liver oil has eleven micrograms of Vitamin D in it so you could as a solution. Just sipped down nine teaspoons of cod liver oil per day gotta solution. It's very gross. I admit and and you're right. It's not a solution because of the cod population so cod population has kind of been not in the greatest condition in nineteen ninety ninety. Two there is actually collapse in cod. Fisheries They found that the biomass northern cod which are found around Lake Newfoundland their the population dropped to one percent of what previous levels were due to overfishing as like a huge drop in in cod and as a result of this like when they found this out they actually put a ban on the fishing of northern cod and this caused like a ton of fisheries stories to shut down a lot of people lost jobs actually so politicians actually use this as lake leverage for elections and stuff so they. There's one guy I forget who it was in Redan their name but they lifted the ban on cod during an election just to gain popularity and then it was later found out that lake he had done so too early. The population had not yet recovered from its Its drop yet a So not owed for him. Yeah Shame on. He didn't really care about cod fisheries. Also bobby that's GonNa suck imagine like big business like crazy. There's you work with bridge inspections. We're just like okay. We're no longer inspecting bridges. It's like there's nothing that you did wrong but little your job no longer exists because it's illegal rain like I was GonNa Fish. My job was to fish cod. That's what I do is simple. Nice life that is a good life now no longer prepare a profession. You're all you all the whole. Were too good at fishing. Cod the ocean now. There's none left them all out. Yeah so there's actually like a failure to accurately assess the population of God to Nineteen Ninety Eight Committee on the status of endangered wildlife in Canada or Kozic for shirt. They a classified cod as vulnerable like in the endangered scale thing. Vulnerable is not quite as bad as endangered but in two thousand the worldwide find for nature the WWF classified it as like you're wrong. It's endangered speaking of the WWF. Clean briefly talk about the fact that the WWE had to change their name away because they've lost the fight to the World Wildlife Rhetorician Adoration Foundation. Whatever really yes because it used to be the world interest W F yeah and then the current WWF sued food and one is now world wrestling entertainment? That's off it's so good. It's one of my favorite random FACS. Don't fuck with animal activists. Second John CENA anyway don't don't anyway Benz Fun fact away anyway so like by two thousand three all pretty much actually not pretty much actually. All the Atlantic Canadian cod fisheries had shut down. There are none Don left and in twenty ten Greenpeace actually put cod on their red list. which is like a list of things they recommend? You don't buy they say that if you if you buy cottage probably sourced from an unsustainable fishery so since and cod has sorta recovered a little bit but as recently as twenty eighteen federal government reduced the quote and they said that cod stocks had fallen yet again so obviously caught is not a sustainable source of vitamin D sale. Other fish straddling other fish and salmon was the next highest on the list. So a salmon has point one thousand micrograms of Vitamin D program. So the average American eats about sixteen pounds of fish pre or not even just Salmon Blake fish in in general per year but in order to get the amount of vitamin D weaned from Salmon. We need six hundred and twenty pounds of salmon per year then over three thousand percent increase in consumption. So just like any kind of fish that we're going to try to eat to get vitamin D is GonNA causing overfishing problem. It's not going to be an option and so next. I looked at mushers. 'cause mushrooms have vitamin D.. In them too so like vitamin Mushrooms in their Raum have like a small amount of in D- But then if you actually expose them to UV light they react to the UV light and they create more vitamin D. It's vitamin vitamin D to Not Vitamin D. Three so like the common button mushroom which is high on the list of mushrooms I had. The abut mushroom has point point three two micrograms per gram of mushrooms so the average American eats about four pounds mushrooms per year and we need to consume him two hundred and fifty one pounds of mushrooms per year to get vitamin D. So that's six thousand. Plus increase in consumption does not sound great for us. No now what is alive but if you need to I mean you want to get your vitamin D. So if that's your only option I'll just stay out of the state. Vitamin D deficient thank you. I like mushrooms but like mushrooms that much. I wanted to see if because obviously we had that overfishing problem. I want to see if this mushroom thing could be sustainable. Apple so edible mushroom production is actually increasing right now so X.. It's expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate of seven point point nine percent between now and twenty twenty six which actually pretty pretty high. It's growing pretty fast. That means that by twenty twenty six it will have increased by by sixty seven percent so nowhere close to six six thousand percent. Obviously so mushrooms are not an option that that was like. Why are we spending for food with vitamin D and their vitamin D supplements lake? That's why astronauts deuce astronauts there in space. They're shielded from the sunlight. They don't get any sunlight at all and to solve this. They take vitamin D supplements. So like. That's an easy solution that I had to look into. How do they make vitamin D supplements? Because they're not just like they don't magically appear we need to make them from something and what they're when most of them are made from actually is something called Leno. Lynn Selena Lin is a wax. That's excreted from wool. Bearing animals primarily sheep so they they like harvested from Sheep Wool L. O.. Excreted from where it's like excreted from. I guess the pores in the skin of the sheep in coats the wool all so like when they shear a sheep they can they can clean out the wall and a they harvest the land from the wool and then the process say you do to get like the vitamin D from the land is say they're able to extract the seven dehydrate cholesterol. which is the same thing that we have in our skin from the the land and they irradiate that with UV? Light and that creates D Three Vitamin D. Three so as like. How much does how much vitamin D three can we get from one sheep so typically use shear a sheep once per year and they can get about one hundred fifty grams of lanoline per year from that cheap so gone through the whole process of extraction? All that there's an assumption said to make but in general well you'd get around thirteen thousand five hundred milligrams of d three per year from one sheep which is a lot actually compared to like how much we actually need need. It wasn't it wasn't number for how much we need like one hundred one hundred micrograms per day per person I'll yet and this is per year and smell grams so it was like okay. That's a lot how much how much sheep. How many sheep do we have in the world? Compared to the amount of people in the world so while Population Orient has seven point seven billion people all and the sheep populations one billion people so one sheep has to support seven point seven people so yet one person needs a one hundred micrograms per day which means that seven point. Seven people needs two hundred eighty one thousand micrograms per year so the the sheep actually provides way more than that. Oh good honey sheep. Yeah we really make surplus of Vitamin D.. which is good but As like Lake we have all the surplus. How long does vitamin D actually last as go bad if we just like let it sit around so the FDA actually doesn't require an an expiration date on vitamin D supplements and the reason for that is because vitamin D actually doesn't become unsafe to consume? If you just leave it out what happens assists that loses its potency so you just let let it sit for a really long time and then you take a pill. It's not gonNA you're not going to get as much vitamin D as if you take it right away. So I was like from Vitamin D Vitamin Edmund. Like decent it gets lower case. You know the case David Loder lurking st but have been So I wanted to try to figure out how long are like how fast loses its potency is found it very hard to find this number like this rate of lost poem. Mm See what I did find. was that some even though the FDA doesn't require an expiration date some companies do choose to put an expiration date and the typical expiration date. It is round two years so that's pretty much what I used from a basis of. How long the vitamin D you will be the last save until you have a really big surplus awesome? Indeed it's only gonNA last two years so every two years will just need to make new supplements not a huge deal so for every seven point seven people we need one sheep and I think that in reality this would just happen on an industrial level. I think that'd be way more efficient than what I have in mind. uh-huh is that every family will just have their own family sheep and they'll have their own. Uv Laptop just process themselves. I don't know how hard the price is. But they can learn. And they'll just every household I have a sheep and chemical processing laboratory to turn whacks. Vitamin D. Supplement can learn. It's a learning process. So yeah if what if no one could good side every family you'd have a sheep wonderful for so.."
