Boxing, Keeler, Ahmed Dimitrius discussed on SI Boxing with Chris Mannix

I am doing great Chris a lot of good fights but I'm really looking afford heavyweight title. Fight coming up. I love myself heavyweight title fight so I can't wait till water and fury to. I'm looking forward as well. But it's you know because you said that I'm going to jump down the rundown here real quick and like boxing in January. I look at it and there was some fun fun. Upsets I mean Jesse heart versus Joe Smith No. I don't think that was a big upset. Huge but Jason Rosario knocking off Jay Rock Williams those made for entertaining moments but like like they were like especially in the case of Rosario too big upset about this past weekend Dimitrius Android Luke keillor's to blow. It still is a problem in boxing that these main events are not fifty fifty even sixty four types. That's what it needs like. What is your experience you have? It happens way more often. I think I think that's the one advantage. Dana White has over boxing. He's conditioners fans to expect you know fifty fifty or fifty five forty five fights in there and all Fights not just in the end the main event you know every now and then you can't help it and you get one. That's a little wider than that. But that's what you get weekend and week out in May and and so the fans expect that and they get upset when you have like Donald Cowboys. Ruining the all time leader in wins and people were upset that he was fighting conor McGregor because you know he had lost two fights in a row. Oh so but in boxing that I trust me crazy that is to think. Why is Luke keillor getting a world title shot forget about why Andrea fighting but why why is getting a world title shot? He doesn't deserve it and we saw that ten seconds into the fight. Yeah less I knocked down came very quickly for android. I mean as some of the covers sports sorts is there anything boxing could take from. UFC that that would be useful or is it just the fact that boxing is so fragmented whereas Dana White has control over ninety percent of the top talent. I think you know that. That's the fair statement. Chris you know when you look at it. There's so many promoters so many networks they all have divergent virgin interest and in MMA business. You know you really have to interest you have UFC. Which I would say probably has seventy to seventy five percent of the top one hundred Fighters in the world. And then you Bella tour which is the second big promotion and their own buy viacom slash. CBS and they have a large number of the best fighters in the world. And then that's that's it and you have see able to make most of the great fights that they wanna make as a result when you go into boxing Terence Crawford fighting for top rank and there's is a ton of good fights out there form but al Hayman has his own ideas of what he wants to do because he has guys lined up and he can put on Fox and not have to deal with Arum and talk about do. I I want to put Crawford on. ESPN or what am I going to do. That's the problem really inherent in boxing. And it's Never GonNa Change under the current system that we have. I mean I won't I. I will probably send over Gaza one this past weekend. I think he's a candidate to fight. Turns Crawford as kind of like an Andy Release Type Sea level. PBC Guy going over to if i Crawford but we still outside a while fury. We still haven't seen evidence that they're able to work together. You know they did Gary Russell Aloma Chanko and there've been a couple of other things but mandatory situation. Yes you're right there it adds a right. I it's rare that we're going to. We're going to get that. Let's be on us. You know but it's rare with anybody I mean I don't WanNa put the blame on Arum and hemant You know look zone Did the fight with Ramirez and Maurice Hooker which is good but you don't see those two sides working together a lot. This is just a big problem and I think call these exclusive contracts. I loved it back in the showtime. Hbo Days when Jay Larkin. The late Jay Larkin came out said great fights no right and they decided not to sign these long term contracts with fighters so that they could cherry pick good fight. It was easier to do that in that day. Because you didn't have as many competing entities now you have a lot more options and everybody everybody wants to exclusives again so it makes it a lot harder. Yeah I think that's something with my understanding of what they're trying to do. In twenty twenty is that is more towards that that Jay Larkin model there. I mean it's they're looking to not necessarily sign guys to multi fight deals but get these big fights like perhaps a hooker versus program some point this summer. I think that's top of their agenda. Yeah I think that that's really what they need to do. Because I think if you look since September of eighteen when they started and they promised I you know pay per view level fights on a subscription service. I think you got your money's worth if you're a boxing fan you know. There's been a lot of good fights on dissolved his own. You haven't gotten your money's worth if you're a casual fan. Who wants to see the big name? You WanNa see Canelo Alvarez and Floyd Mayweather. You're not seeing those guys in those kind of fights L. Canelo oh to their credit has fought forget rocky fielding but he came back and he fought Danny Jacobs and Kovolev in his last fight so that was good but but I think for the most part the type of that we were thinking of fights ahead on. Hbo Pay per view for years are not showing up on zone. And that's the real problem. I think if they can pull that off and make that switch then I think they're going to get ahead of the game. I mean I think it's a really good service for me and you fight fans but it's not such a good service for just somebody who wants to watch a big fight every now and then. Let's talk about this past weekend. Anyone that listened this podcast knows Ahmed Dimitrius android fan really. I just look I believe in the guys talent. And I'd love for him to get the ability to showcase it against one of those guys. Unfortunately what we saw Luquillo Keiller was a level versus D.. Level at that point just a completely one sided performance as somebody is another side of this conversation. Give me your thoughts thoughts on on Android and his whole situation right now. Well I am high on Android but less than than you are. I just don't like you know. I talked to him when he signed if I- Keeler and I brought up with his father said to him and the celebrity fight and after the first round. Hey Don't do this be careful and it was almost it's like you know instead of going out there and have that star making performance blow this guy out in two rounds and and get out of there and look good. He's saying be cautious. Just don't take any chances whatsoever so ever and I think in boxing the rea the reason you become a star to a certain degree is if you take risks in you succeed and manny. Pacquiao is a great example that he took took a ton of risk. We find one memo Marquez. He he failed utterly but people still loved him for that. And I understand you know it. It's easy for me to sit here and on this Chair and say you know Dimitri Andre should take risks when I'm not the one in the ring fighting and it's not my health but if you WANNA complain about not getting the big fights and you WanNa complain about uh not getting the exposure and the big paydays. You have to do what it takes to get that especially in. This fractured time. The sport what we talked about earlier just dovetails into his situation. All right if you want to get those kind of fight if you WANNA be in that type of spotlight you have to fight fights at people get turned on by and he's not doing that and I thought aw he really embarrassed himself against the Luquillo he he. He couldn't get this guy out of here. The corner was going to stop the fight. After what was it. The second or third round mm Keeler was just totally overwhelmed. You could see emotionally. He was he just couldn't deal with it and to meet your still couldn't get him out of there and to me. That was an embarrassment. I think he's a great talented Allenton. I think if he were to say Hello Alvarez he would give Carmelo a lot of trouble because he's such a good boxer. But there's that special something that make Floyd Loyd Ford and Manny Manny. Camila Cabello and I don't know that Dimitrius has that one of the things. I was surprised that he struggled with was the ability. To finish you know as I'm watching from from ringside he just was if he had just slowed down a little bit. Maybe taking a step back and come forward. He probably would have been able to finish Keeler but he was so he can never create eight that space and for a guy that we look at as an elite talent. You've got to be able to do that. That's something that you gotTa get into the gym and figure out don't you. I mean that's that's a big part of of being a great fighter being able to finish properly the thing that I looked at in that fight that really concerned me. Chris was his foot work. I thought killer dictator where the fight went in terms of Cuba was moving to try to get away. Keeler did not WANNA fight. Keeler was trying to survive but Dmitri did not trap them in a corner when when Keeler got to a corners because he went to the corner where he wanted to go and he stood there. You know I think Dimitrius has to be better at cutting off the ring and in a situation like that and I think that was the same same thing that happened with celebrity and that fight he needs to get in a situation where he makes them fight where he wants to fight and how he wants to. He has the ability to do that. I don't know if he lost concentration `concentration or what it was but certainly if he would have done that he could have picked his shot gone to the body a little more than he did. You know he was head hunting a lot with those shots that he was throwing. I think he stops that guy easily and I think one really good body shot would probably put him down and kill. You would've said I've had enough and I think the rough looking for a reason to stop that fight. Yeah no Andrea. THOUGHT HE ADAM. I'm in the second row climbing up on the ropes that second time. He's done that by the way where he has not knocked the guy out. In those circumstances you know Dimitrius after the fight was talking about Billy Joe Saunders in my role in the ring I was trying to steer him away from that back to Charles. Charles I do love the fight a lot and I don't understand why I it hasn't come through for wishy given how much money has been put up here but I just look I understand android. Saunders is a significant fight to world champions champions fighting but aesthetically like isn't that just a stinker like is that any could that possibly be a good fight. I look at that fight and I say both of these guys as have have really not had a lot of entertaining fights Andrea last fight. He was struggling and then he finished really well you know. He came from behind and finished and his fight against David lemieux a a couple of years ago I thought he was impressive. And how he fought but most of his other fight or not fight where they bring you out of the seat you know. He's effective. He wins kind of like Andrei but just not entertaining. Just not a guy that's going to you know make anybody's jaw drop And so I don't see that being there I think would dimitrius is going for and call on him out of saying well. I want to collect belts and I WANNA be able to show beat talent show. Hey how good I am by being guys. Other people. Widely acknowledged have talent if I beat the most avoided guy out there then I must be doing something right. I think that's where he's going. I agree with you though. I think a fight with Charlie would be a much better fight. I think cannella would consider fighting them. You know can all areas Lonnie Lara Canoas. Not Afraid of anybody. But I think Andre has to give Cannella L. O.. A reason to want to fight him. You know make it a better fight than just you know there's talk that was gonna Fight Murata I don't really care for that fight but you know. Morocco is a fighter. I hope he'll be there to fight..
