Automatic TRANSCRIPT

A Isaac. What happened but he gets to me? Yeah so I'm just going to bring it right back around as we listened to that which I love but bring it right back around to to sort of where you start in this book and you you're talking about how you speak. Speak all these different languages in South Africa in your stand-up how much is language. Fit into how you view the world and and even what you find funny in that case of trap as a toddler languages is completely the prism through which I see my entire life. You know for me languages. Bridges is both what separates and brings people together languages how we process emotion with other human beings languages how we hear an experience experience emotions and ideas around us in society and I don't just mean English and French and German. I mean even the language that we use used within language in whether it's body language or you know with its music. There are so many different languages that that that we have and possess as human beings that help us connect or help us define ourselves in this reality and so for me. That's that's literally everything that is happening to me. All the time is just a language anguish. How do you interpret trump's language? No other time people listen to what trump says but they don't listen to what he means and love the time his his audience connecting with what he means which is why they don't care about what the media reports on what he says and so always trying to do is exist in a space where connect with the language that people are using translated into into a language that I can then translate to somebody else. Well I hope that a lot. A lot of this country's young children read your book because I think it. Just there's so many lessons in it and it's really interesting to hear about your upbringing. Trevor Noah thank you I absolutely yeah. Well it's great talking to you. Thank you so much for joining us. Thank you for your time my conversation. With Trevor Noah from June. His comedy album son of Patricia is up for Grammy. Those awards are on Sunday. We've got an excerpt from his book at here now dot. Hundreds of thousands of people rallied in Baghdad today demanding that troops leave Iraq. The demonstration came three weeks to the day after an American drone strike killed. Iran's top commander who was in Baghdad at the time. NPR's Jane Arraf he's in Baghdad now and joins incest Jane First of all describe what you heard and saw at these protests today well there had been quite a lot of fears that this would be a protest that would try to rush. The Green Zone tried tried to storm the US embassy. None of that happened. It was a huge protest. Not The million people that mocked it a center called for Senator. Is the Shia cleric. Who organized is this protest? But there were several hundred thousand and they were all very much on message. They were chanting against America basically no America they wanted. US forces to leave there. They were waving rather unflattering portraits of president trump and a a lot of them dancing and singing and waving the Iraqi flag and just remind us about Muqtada AL solder. The Shia cleric That you just mentioned who called for this rally. This is a name. I'm that Americans have been hearing for many many years. But remind us who he is and and tell us what he said so he was a young cleric in two thousand and three when the US invaded aided Iraq and toppled Saddam Hussein and then the US of course stayed so considering them occupiers he raised a militia to fight them that that was two thousand and four when the US army was fighting Sutter's forces. Young kids you know with rifles shooting at tanks in the streets in Asia and other places so now fast forward a he is a major political. Figure he's not in Iraq at the moment. He's in Iran pursuing his religious studies but he had a message for the protesters and for the country. Let's just listen to what.
