Listen: Vikings, Football, Mike Zimmer discussed on WEEI at Night
"That's four six to two or tweet us at under center. NBC if you'd like to you can tweet me at Malone's, Mike, I think we would all agree that we're having better days offense coordinator, John Deepa Lippo. Vikings fired today after that twenty one seven loss to the Seahawks on Monday night football. And the team has promoted the quarterbacks coach Kevin Stepan scheme to fill the bay conc- on an interim basis doubt. If if you weren't paying attention when Pat Shurmur was one of the show a year ago. And got the Vikings all the way to the NFC championship game. It was Shurmur request. To Mike Zimmer. The head coach Rick Spielman the front office general manager Danske takeover as coordinator ZIM like, nah, not going to happen. We're going to go. Get the smartest youngest. Most qualified guy. Of course, Filipo was the guy who would work with Carson Wentz and Philadelphia is coming up Super Bowl win. Right. So they went out and spend all that money to your deal for him. And by the way, I was counting this earlier today. This is like zips fifth operative coordinator since joining the Vikings back in two thousand fourteen. The vikings. Yeah, they've been a bit dreadful there were high expectations for this football team. They scored at least twenty points a game until the last few weeks before they put up a total of seventeen points back to back losses to Bopha to England Patriots. And the Seattle Seahawks. And I listen. It's one thing to be embarrassed on a national stage. I mean, Monday night football is it what it was when you had Howard. Frank and dandy. Don Meredith I mean that was the best of ever got. But it's still it's still a national stage. All your peers are at home watching you play. You get embarrassed. Apparently, this was no knee jerk reaction to that loss. I mean when you look at the numbers, it's easy to say. Okay. Let's Vikings offense into struggling they fail to put up over three hundred yards on offense at four of their last five games. Yet. They still sit at six six in one. And by the way, despite the loss there's still the second wildcard position with just three weeks left. All right now ZIM last night as you might imagine didn't have any answers. When asked about how the offense was going to get back on track. The Vikings to obtain on third down last night over two on fourth down hooting and Erin throw by Kirk cousins late in that football game on a fourth down. That was critical when he threw behind the tight end. Of course, they scored zero points despite four trips inside the Seattle for yard line despite all of that and all this function with this offense cousin said after the game last night. He still feels is biking team is a factor. Unfortunately, we haven't put the whole complimentary football together enough this season to really be the team that I think we we know we're capable of. And that'll be the challenge these last three weeks, and I said it last Wednesday that that was a challenge this week, and we didn't necessarily do that. So that'll be our focus these last three weeks. And you know, if we can put it all together. I think there's there's you know, kind of feeling what we're saying. Hey, watch out, you know, if we put it together could be special. Yeah. Okay. So from the outside looking at. Yeah. Okay. The Vikings apparently got better a quarterback they replaced case keenum who by the way took them to the NFC championship game. That was a good number. Mike zimmer? Publicly. He criticized the play of the quarterback asking the question out loud. Can we expect this from case keenum moving forward? So what do they do? Well, they go out and get cousins and they've gone from the sixth most efficient offense last year with pets at the controls to the twenty fourth position in the National Football League, including thirtieth rushing the football. They're only average about eighty five yards a game rushing the ball now. Previously. In fact, it'd happened a week or two ago Zimmer voices concerns about depots play calling to the media saying that the Vikings offense was unbalanced and need to run the football of a bit more. Zim talk to the media today after making his decision and said he has a high regard for deep LeBow. But the bottom line is that this is a results driven business at the end of the day. It's pretty much production business, and you know, it's difficult. I mean, it's hard thinking about hard making the decision hard trying to I have a lot of respect for John. I think that he's Gary, very brilliant mind, but we won't producing really was the end of it. All right now, according to ESPN Zimmer not the general manager Rick Spielman that had the final say on the firing people Filipo there'd been multiple reports out there that said this was not a unanimous decision within the Vikings organization. Here's how I view it shocked when I heard the news, really three games left. You're firing your newly minted offensive coordinator. But I think the cries from Mike Zimmer earlier in the year was, hey, listen, I built this football team with Rick Spielman in my image my philosophy run the football play. Great defense. Right. That travels. Well in the winter and in the postseason. That wasn't happening. You can't fire Kirk cousins, you just pay to make guaranteed him eighty four million bucks. And as difficult as that decision is why not get rid of them. Let's bring us too fancy who was with us last year. Under Pat Shurmur knows exactly how we want to run the show here. And let's see if we can make a run at this. Now, the other thing to take into consideration. Here is the deep Lippo was on many head coaching shortlists out there. Primarily for his work with the Super Bowl champion eagles under Doug Peterson. He was the quarterbacks coach there, and there have been people that have wondered out loud. Whether this guy was focused on his next job not being the offensive coordinator for the Vikings. But whether or not having any success in Minnesota was going to get him the next head coaching job in perhaps he should have been focused more clearly on what's at stake. So as I said this biking's loss and the way they've been playing the last three or four weeks has not knocked about to the playoffs. They currently sit in that sixth and final seed the wildcard seed. So we'll see if they can get this thing fixed and turned around a meanwhile, the college football now. Nick sabin. Has found a replacement for his offensive coordinator. Mike Loxley who we told you by the way as decided to leave and take the job at Maryland. Right. So now Sabin has officially tapped his fifth offensive coordinator since the beginning of the two thousand sixteen season. It's crazy, isn't it? I mean, all this change they continue to get better. How the guy that's going to take over as a guy by the name of Dan. He spent the two thousand eighteen season this past college football season. His first with Alabama's the team's quarterback coach while carrying the title of associate head coach is anybody actually wonder though, I mean, Nick Sabin. I have to. I mean, you have to go to the source or how does he come up with these titles? I mean, anybody who gets fired of any note former head coach in the college football rakes coordinator of the NFL. It seems like he goes straight to Tuscaloosa, go to work for for Nick Sabin anyways. Last. We had heard of he knows he was interviewing for the Kansas position. And of course, that ultimately went to less miles. Here's the list of savings coordinators, by the way since two thousand sixteen Linkin Steve's Arcadian, Brian Cabell Mike Loxley and now Danielle Niles, so we'll see you wanna sign me up to be the offensive coordinator for to tackle by. I'll take that job not to heart. All right. Eight five five three two three four NBC. Again is the number if you'd like to jump on react to the firing of John D Filipa open Minnesota. Let's get to the official start of the show. Here's tonight's edition of burning questions. All right. This is as my zipper pointed out production business, and there are a lot of things one can do to try to jump start. A sputtering offense. Maybe we can point the finger all over the place today. They fired the offensive coordinator John the liberal after the game last night. Why receiver Adam feelings that don't blame any of the coaches, including deep Lippo blame the player, and we're we're fighting as an office. We're trying to get some gone. We need a smart, and we need it fast. That's the tough part about you know, you hear office quarters. Get a lot of ridicule. But it's about the players the players got to make the plays. It doesn't matter. We'll play is called you have to run play. And you have to be successful on it. And I just comes down to execution guys doing the right thing on the on play. All right. So the question is simple. How did the Vikings? Right. The ship right now. First of all, I think they've got to find a way to bolster that office at one point Kirk cousins has been under pressure way. Too much the season for my perspective. Then he'd run the football more, and they need to run it better. You have a real game-breaker dalvin cook since he's come back off that hamstring injury. So why would you only run him thirteen times last night when that game against Seattle was so close with the Vikings made of the NFC championship game last year with the philosophy of great defense and running the football the firing of John D political at least signals return to that philosophy. Who is he? In Chris Collins, Lou. This is sick. All right. I don't know about you. But I don't love to watch love stories. So I did not watch the finale between LeBron James Dwayne last night as the two faced off at the staple center. If you're interested. Dwayne Wade missed a desperation three that would have won the game. Lebron the Lakers ultimately beat the heat. And LeBron now as one more win Dwayne Wade when they face each other during the regular season, all that really doesn't matter. Lebron James was asked after the game. What it meant to finish up at the staple center against his best friend twain way suppose, and I'm not even talking about the winter winter in the wtrw Mastel for the pharmacy possessions. Garden me on the morning, and there's only one building that could even embrace that moment at Staples Center. So I mean, we all got a treat tonight. Not only, you know us to ask competitors as brothers. But everybody was was here tonight. Great game. Boy that just atmosphere was now listen that sound bite was given."
