Listen: Wrestling, NFL, WWE discussed on Le Batard & Friends - Mystery Crate
"If you listen to the show you obviously. We know that I am the biggest wrestling fan on the show and Tony. Kahn has been gracious with his time. With South Beach sessions and sitting in the radio studio for an entire our our with us and I want to take the opportunity to just geek out over wrestling with you. Because I'm very passionate about this wrestlemainia every year. I'm very excited that you guys. This came onto the scene because I think competition makes all the products that much better you take it as a flattering thing when you see Vince McMahon and wwe because it probably is unfair to put it. Just Vince McMahon. When you see them doing things outside of the norm putting main roster stars on T. because they're going head to head with you on Wednesday even though I'm pretty sure both entities are on? The record is not really thinking of it as a competition. But you've got your eye on it and you probably think that's a curious decision. This is actually quite flattering during the I expected an xt would end up on television against us From the outset and I wasn't sure whether it would be on USA or Fox Doc. Sports one but I assumed it would be on either one or USA directly programmed against us as to our show. I wasn't at all surprised about that and I told. TNT from the outset. That was probably going to happen and it did happen. I just wasn't sure what channel and then I did. Expect the roster would get beefed up and you know actually probably happened about a months later than I expected and the hand Kinda got forest with the travel. Logistics problems that they had Do Two overseas shows that they've done and that Ended up leading to a lot more investment in that show and I wasn't surprised to see it with anything. I was probably surprised that it took a month as the president of all elite wrestling. And you're obviously you've been a wwe fan growing up do you. I was it. WWF and was there anything in particular that push you wait. You say that as if you're not a fan of the product. I'm not a fan of other wrestling products. I watch all wrestling shows but I can't really be a fan of any wrestling company anymore. You can't can't be a fan. I can't be a fan of other. NFL teams or other English football clubs either so it changes the way that you actually digest the product now. Do you miss being a fan sometime time. No in the same way that I don't miss you know what no I don't it's a little different with the NFL. Because of the viewing experience guy can still watch wrestling. I can't watch as much watching I don't spend as much time at home couch anymore with the NFL it actually changed everything because the NFL viewing experience. Amazing it's like you know the one downside of owning owning in NFL team and and traveling is like you don't get to sit at home and watch red zone ever and Sunday ticket. That's how good those products are and in wrestling. Yeah Change Change. Allies consumed it but that happened even in the lead up like scouting and watching everything and I. Yeah I you miss being a fan sometimes but I'd much rather be in the position. I'm in I think even being in the position that you're in sometimes you can still get lost in it and sometimes it just boils down to you being a fan. Do you ever sort of lose that that. Because you're you're in the gorilla position for these big shows now at some point you got to be just so geeked out over some of the stuff that you're watching you forget like Oh crap like I'm working gorilla. I never forget the timing because I never I have to do. The time cues but within you know within a it it what I find is really interesting is There have have been a few times where I have absolutely been pure fans the best moments we've had and really enjoyed them but you can't again when you have to keep an eye on the clock and you have to make make sure things are running smoothly you know you can't get that far into it and I think that's similar in sports so that's where I think being in professional sports before Kinda it did serve. Well I know that you're director of football operations for Fulham Football Club. You're the sporting director over there director of analytics for the Jacksonville and Bill. Jaguars so you probably don't have much to watch any of these things live. I know you say you can't be fan anymore but Tony Kahn. Still find himself waking up at three o'clock walk in the morning eastern time to see what's going on with new Japan wrestle kingdom going on but you're watching it sort of like scouting from business perspective. I mean I watch other companies shows IOS and when stuff's good I do enjoy it so I guess yeah I mean I still can appreciate it but you definitely watch through a different Lens like now when you watch. NFL Football Ball. You know you're looking at players and you know you want your friends to do well and I think that is similar like you have relationships with people in the business. That don't necessarily work for you. You you like them and you want him to do well. I was watching some of wrestle kingdom and some all elite wrestlers showed up from arrangements that were done even before they agreed to terms with Ali wrestling. Jon Moxley Oxley the former dean. Ambrose is titleholder over there and Chris Jericho his obviously been second wrestle kingdom that he just took third right Yeah Yeah Yeah. Yeah the Omega match in the Naito Match And now Donna Maha she so I know Chris Jericho some what he said after the wrestle kingdom I phase right now and it might put you in an awkward position because he mentioned specifically how much he would like for. Aws New Japan pro wrestling and have a working relationship. Is that something. That's sort of in the cards for you guys. Not I'M NOT ASKING I. I'm a pretty easy going. Nice Ace guy I I hope I've projected that while I'm here and a believe one good turn deserves another and I guess I'm still waiting for my good turn because because I let I've let them have access to a lot of people when I don't need to I have exclusive contracts with with Chris and John and when they came in they they. This was something that they wanted and I said yeah we can do that. I could yank them at any time. I haven't Because it's important to them. I do it for Chris and John Not for new Japan pro wrestling but if there were people at New Japan pro wrestling it was important to them to come and establish themselves in America on television which is not something they're able to do because they don't have a television show of their own in America then presumably they would come over to aws and make an impact with us no pun intended and I was in trouble like towards into that sense and if they'd like to send people over to work with US I'm open to it but I have some people over there to do things things and I haven't really stood people's way when they have wanted to work. Those shows as long as it doesn't impede US and Chris and John Haven't missed worked for me they've been out all my shows so it hasn't been an issue. They wouldn't go over there if it was going to interfere with what they're doing for Awa so they I think they see it as something complimentary so I'm not opposed to a working relationship and as I see like I've already done a lot of stuff for them so I guess I'm still waiting for something in return. I won't hold my breath. What sort of challenges come with now? This is weekly it's episodic TNT has been in the wrestling game in the past. But it's been a while what sort of production challenges have sort of popped up week to week that you didn't necessarily foresee you you are shows have looked great and I get tons of positive feedback. About how good this shows. Look I think a couple of times There were some sound issues that were out of our control. we've worked on With our network partner and they were like limited domestic issues and in some cases for the most part. I mean. I've been really really happy with our team. We have a crew of guys that's produced a lot wrestling shows. I mean Keith Mitchell. Our executive producer goes back so far in the business I mean not only did he work for the original. WCW He he came over right around the time Ted. Turner bought Jim Crockett promotions and and the NWEA's Crockett territory became WCW But Keith. Even before that that was producing World Class Championship Wrestling Dallas. Von Eric's in the early eighties. And so he goes back in wrestling production as far as anyone else in Keith Ethan. His crew have produced more wrestling pay per views than anybody. Except for Vince McMahon and his team. So he's the most experienced person in the business. You mentioned that you got you that that was available. Obviously Yeah Yeah You've mentioned that You can't really be a fan any more of the products. I do want to talk to con the Fan. So let's go back in time a little bit Ed. I sort of when I was graduating high school and in college I stopped watching wrestling altogether Part of that was the product and part of that was just my growth. But what brought me back was someone sent me a DVD. Knowing that I used to like wrestling and it was a ring of honor and I thought some of the stuff that they did in the early two thousands really building some stars people know seeing punk from what he did at wwe. But I thought he had some of the more compelling stories and this was like old school like DVD's the funniest that's old school now and instead used to be H. S. tapes but I would follow like all the stories that they tell us more Jones punk through. DVD's and that's what really ignited my passion back for the business. And I am stuck with it since you know those are those are so many talented wrestlers on those shows and when you look at the roster it's amazing how many people from that roster have gone on and done great things in wrestling But those shows didn't look good they were in small buildings and You know they came the kind of fall into specter of of WCW which had been this company where that was the number two company for a long time. They've been even the number one company at one point and their shows look great. They were on a great channel. The carried tons of credibility. And they're just having been anything like that in a long time. And that's what I wanted to bring back to wrestling like a roster with rustlers that were exciting to people but like when I look back. Those ring of honor shows. It's hard to be inspired by the company.."
