Listen: Baseball, Serena Williams, Jennifer Ring discussed on That's What She Said with Sarah Spain
"Yeah. And and some that are like super wonderfully surprising. I, the baseball class I assigned this book by Jennifer ring who's political scientist at Nevada, Reno, and it's called stolen bases, and it's about it's this hidden history of the fact that women and and African American men, but but really she, she's looking at women how women were pushed out of baseball and how hard it is for women to play the sport of baseball. And I know you've covered the women's traveling base, the girls traveling baseball team, the ways that that people just react to such anger to to girl getting access to the space. It's crazy, and it was nervous, assigning. Book because it was a summer class and you know, majority men students, and I got so many miles after that class thing, they just love that book and you know, blew their minds and that's what that's what makes teaching sports history in this way. So much fun. Like somebody told me I should put on my business card, but I'm in the business of blowing minds. You think differently about the world when you use sport as your lens into understanding the past, so that that's really fun about teaching sports history. I love that I'm gonna end on that because that's such a great first of all, I love in the business of blowing minds but also using sport to like use this lens to change the women. You do have to do the one thing that everybody does, but nobody. Effects. Punish inquisition. Expects the Spanish inquisition Spanish position. That's right. Nobody expects it number one. What's the natural talent you wish you were gifted with? Oh my goodness. Oh, I wish I had hop. You had tight instead of running. It just makes you lose that different. On number two. Once your desert island album, you can only have one. Oh, this is going to be obscure and nerdy. So I play the violin and there's really awesome violent. If she does like experimental music and his name is Kishi Bashi and it would be one of his albums with a teacher answer. Answer on number three, which lives with anyone for a day, who would it be.."
