Listen: Illinois, Wheaton, John discussed on John Williams
"I'm Steve Bertrand in the WGN radio newsroom, and these are the stories that matter on seven twenty WGN into one of those lists that they put out Steve. And I bet you they're going to get it wrong. Okay. It's the list of the best place to live in every state. The best place to live in each each. There's fifty places listed. Yeah. If you're in Kansas overland park, and I know overland park is lovely. But I like Lee would kiss a where would you guess they would say is the best place to live in Illinois does L. I don't even know where those places are. It's one place to sell. It's a little crossroad just a little bit west of Montana east of Wilmington. Oh, your old stomping ground. Well. That's it to the end of the day. People are gonna do places they know live love, it'd be maybe a better place in southern Illinois. But if you've never lived there, you don't know, let's not southern Illinois. And there was a story in the seventies. A church in the eighties. According to this article is CNN where they asked nobody important the best place to live in Illinois is Wheaton. Founded by a group of abolitionists the eighteen fifties and home to the Wheaton flag anti-slavery newspaper this safe. Well, educated suburb of Chicago has a rich history readily discovered the dupage county historical museum, but suburb of Chicago has a rich history readily discovered at the dupage historical museum and just recently almost all residents were allowed to dance. See, that's it. I mean, it's a safe prosperous. Monochromatic town, which is great. If that's if that makes if that's your vision of heaven, I'm happy for you. What if it's not? And I'm sorry. This is just such a weird sentence this safe. Well, educated suburb of Chicago has rich history that is readily discovered at the dupage county historical museum or at Google or I don't know a lot of the encyclopedia Britannica dot com. It was founded by John Quincy Adams in eighteen ninety one. Let's see I did not know that did, you know? I didn't know that either doesn't make me want to run over there. John. Look at some property. I'm having fun now. Chrissy. Mutton chops take a horse drawn carriage ride along lively downtown Wheaton. Okay. Up into some downtown's weight. And I love you. But I'm not sure that the first word that comes to mind is likely stopping at the little popcorn store. See that's just my point. Isn't it who put this out some dumb dumbs? I don't know. It's time time magazine time magazine, but you know, really, you can't fifty states. So they go. Hey, midwest guy, and he just goes, right? Let me get the demographics of Illinois high income low crime, boom waiting next. I would have guessed that it was a suburb close to the city. So you know, and a northern suburbs like Vernon hills or buffalo grove. That's wealthier and has a good school there. And it's easy to get city from. Okay. You're onto something there for me easy to get to the city from because as well as your suburb is like LaGrange park. My kids we essentially raise their they went to junior high and high school and the Grange park, and they went to Lyons township high school, which is kinda why you go there and you're near the train, but to me. I didn't go to L T. The reason I really liked LaGrange park was because I was close to downtown Chicago. Well, if I can just say again is only a forty minute drive from a metro station. So not only does Wheaton have the little popcorn store a nineteen twenties landmark building just forty nine inches wide here. Again, what they don't have a ball of yarn. Let's twelve foot tall. I really that amazes me too. And like they say great places to go in America like see the stops as you travel, the USA. Can you imagine going out of your way on a trip? And then saying there, we are porcelain moose. Okay, kids. Let's go. So it's a corn palace. Stop at the little popcorn store. Nineteen twenties landmark building just forty nine inches wide. Forego the Lincoln park zoo in Chicago and head to Wheaton's Causley zoo to learn about species native to Illinois really released. So that's the makes and a great place to live if you are in Wheaton, and you lived there. These are things that make you happy. But I think if you are neutral about the whole thing and you Lincoln park zoo on the right on Lake Michigan right off beautiful lake shore drive fund restaurants nearby. It's it's just lovely the boats on the on the harbor or this zoo and Weeden it doesn't take anything away from the zoo and Wheaton, but I'd like really are. You kidding me to continue? But if this if the Wheaton's Causley zoo, you learn about species native to Illinois, they'll median home sale prices in the first quarter of twenty to eighteen were around three hundred fifty thousand dollars. The median family income is one hundred nineteen thousand dollars. So that sounds pricey. You're probably making a good coin if you live in Wheaton to here again, if you're making a good coin. But if you're not. The way to do. This would be that you cannot pick a town that you grew up in her currently live in which would sort of ruined Steve's whole vibe here because seems to be going to places that are near and dear to his heart. I could say manuka, I could say, no, no, everyone knows you couldn't I can't even say manuka ride. I could say manuka as they say in manuka, but. Where's where's the great place to live in Illinois? I think the northwest corner of the state is underappreciated. Have you been up by Galina west of Rockford over there? Yeah, it's beautiful. There's some really great places far southern visiting what kind of life. You wanna lead that too that too? Yeah. Yeah. I, you know, I think a great place to live is on the lake in Chicago, maybe north of lake shore drive, but south of Evanston are in Evanston. But in one of those great big fantastic houses like a half acre yard. Oh. So you're north of Evanston. Yeah. But you're you're all shore really rich to the the best place to live some place where you're really rich. And you have a giant house that you can afford when the roof leaks stuff like that. So if you're really rich just about anywhere. You live is a pretty nice place. All right because you yourself some real estate of manuka, let me tell you. If you've got that kind of coin. John at least it. I don't know what this one is about actually look up, Indiana Carmel, Indiana. That's the place to live. If you want to live in Indiana. What's wisconsin? Do you have it? Yeah. Alphabetical? So it'll take a couple of page turns here, let's see Mississippi Bellevue. Nebraska Henderson, Nevada, Cary, North Carolina. Amherst New York. Hillsborough, Oregon Edmond, Oklahoma. Would it be funny? If just tell the truth Oklahoma did not make the list pass best place to live in Oklahoma is in Tennessee. It's in Oklahoma, Texas, Wisconsin, you've heard of this town where we live in this. This would be a better way to do it. We're familiar enough with Wisconsin. We could vote intelligently on this. If you live anywhere in Wisconsin. Where would you live Oklahoma walk? I'd say Madison or Managua or Milwaukee. Right. Yeah. Well, those are big ones. Milwaukee's a good town. Yeah. Milwaukee's a good town. You know? I mean, you got that pro sports there, you're on the lake they've got good music fest in the summer of it. It's not so overwhelming that you can't do it. They've got a couple of big universities, or, you know, people that don't Marquette, Marquette and. Wisconsin university of Wisconsin, Milwaukee is actually the second largest public school in the state. What does that mean people who know and love Marquette love Marquette? It means. I don't know anything about Marquette lovely. Yeah. But it's not a big school. It's not a big. It's not a big school. What's the word enrollment at Marquette, the undergrads, maybe eight thousand something like that? Yeah. The number one place to live in Wisconsin population. Two hundred forty nine thousand is Madison. I do think Madison is lovely that lake is big you got the school there. It has a campus vibe. But the state capital is there. So Scott that protester vibe not that whole. You've got knuckle headed politicians always going to be a protest. There's always some entertainment going on there. John. I think that they put the spindle from Berlin in Wheaton. Oh, you mean, the what did they call it the carbon the while the head of nicknamed the big spindle, the car kebab, the car kebab is that what they called it. I don't know. It was something like that. It was like a giant kebab skewer and it had four or five old cars skewered right through the middle. And I remember when that came down. I was so sad. And whatever that was called is that and we'd now John Wheaton has great schools and to mattress stops. John Wheaton is nothing special at least not anymore. I grew up there. And it was a nice town. You never had to lock your door. But not anymore waiting. No, no, no Naperville, of course. And I can't afford to live there. My favorite place where we can visit. I'm sure a lot of folks would save Naperville fun fact for film director, west craven went to Wheaton college. John if you have small children caused. Is easier and cheaper the zoo and Wheaton now that's fair Weeden was dry until nineteen eighty five. I thought it might still be it's it's known for that typical Chicago response. John people from Chicago think through the center think they're the center of the universe. But they're not galena the land. The glaciers forgot John. The very best place to live is where you are happy being. Well, isn't that profound and true, John? It's caramel like the candy not Carmel like in California. Thank you for that six three oh said John best place to live in Illinois a sandwich, Illinois. A stone's throw from the suburb rural living and the best oldest county fair in the state. I lived in sandwich, Illinois, freer, it's a stone's throw from York Ville, it's just east of psalm knock and its sister city or its neighboring town is plano. No as in plano sandwich. I lived in two different apartments in sandwich. Illinois, one by the high school and one above a shop in downtown. In downtown sandwich. Yeah. Sandwiches. Nice town. I used to describe it as Mayberry, and I still have a warm spot in my heart for sandwich. Hey, John, the wife and I live on crystal lake and the town of Lakewood, and it's a little slice of heaven. Well, I'm happy for y'all. I wish you nothing, but the best Madison Wisconsin, that's the best place to live in that state. According to time magazine, one of the one think Jani King John award from a man whose house was hit with eleven bullets two years ago anywhere that there's not gang violence in high crime is a good place to live. We haven't gotten to my thoughts about the Tommy hawk fight. And remember we've posted the fight with me and Tommy hawk WGN radio dot com. You can see it there. It's kind of fun elephants. Sarah on our staff felt that I took too much of a beating in the cutting of that video because we you will see some hitting going on. And I'm not kidding. There's two videos that we posted on our front page a story about that in a minute. Hey,."
