Listen: Football, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh discussed on Huddle Up with Gus
"For the full full-back back. There maybe maybe maybe you don't carry a fullback. Maybe it's an offensive line. Maybe it's a deep sense of line or whatever you want you put put that behind the running back you give me you give me two tight ends three tight ends and then you line up and then you have a you have a you know you baby. I have a boot to the off side of where the way is maybe run play action to the to the tight end side where the wing is or you. Hand the ball. I promise Hugh you're going to convert more third one's doing that than you are with some of the formations that these coaches come up with. He had joe camel producer and and I were disillusioned when we were talking about that steelers. They were down twenty. Nothing's third one this in the debacle in New England and they're in a shotgun with no backfield. I mean like yeah I just do a play action too tight end. It's GonNa work while eighty percent of the time but no I listen I listen Yeah Kristie. I listened to Chris Collins make the same comment he said look at how the game has changed. Its third one. And they're in shotgun. Yes it's unbelievable. I mean well well I mean to to it. It's you know it's like the chances of first of all the chances of getting a holding penalty or good secondly some Guy Swan the ball and he knocking doc in the ball in the air knocking down but good the receiver. Not Being Open. All those bad things can happen you lined up in power formation. Do limit the bad things and I to me. I may be stupid but I've always thought about. How do you eliminate the bad things that can happen in the game and just have the positive things happen? I think we we want a super bowl because of it I mean yeah and John Brody John Brokers before one for us And made the difference in the game here right club. One of the classic plays and it's all history. Yeah no doubt. Here's a here's another one for you. How about the Seattle Seahawks in the New England Patriots Super Bowl and I don't I mean that's how you make that call and then and then in Atlanta's the same way all you know? Atlanta Falcons knelt down three three downs. It's it it said one. Yeah Matt Ryan a totally different person. Yeah absolutely I mean people. Would you know you're you're if you WANNA world championship. It's a small attorney. I think there's only thirty five US thirty four of us that have won world championships and When you think what fifty three super bowls and this is what we're looking at? I mean just just in in the thirties you still have guys course. Thomas sort of dominated it over time here match that you play half half your career. You've played in super super bowls. Yeah that's insane. I played fifteen years. I don't even get to get the one you know whether or not update amazing. Hey Joe going back to Notre Dame tell us what it's like you're you're in the glory years of Notre Dame. What's that experience experience like you with one of the greatest coaches ever have a team? Yeah I mean it was. It was really a great time to be A. Ah on the fighting Irish about that. Well you know when I nine hundred sixty seven I went to Notre Dame Like I said I committed to Notre Dame freshmen. Were ineligible. Go to play Varsity ball so We were we got the scrimmage with them but we never got we got to get beat up by but we never got to play so we had we got it. We had a home and home series against Michigan State of which and then Pittsburgh had three games. We played the Pittsburgh game. The Michigan State stuff got snowed out so we never had a chance to place. We had one game a freshman and like I said I'm a skinny little kid. I'm wondering Notre Dame had signed thirteen quarterbacks in the nineteen sixty seven seven class. I was one of. I was one of thirteen quarterbacks. But what they did is back in the late sixties. They you didn't recruit to specific positions like they do today. So some of those quarterbacks became defensive backs one became a tight end to became linebackers linebackers. They three became wide receivers. One became a running back. A couple became. DB's So you so you go after that athlete and then you make that athlete into something else. I was too skinny for them to do anything. But allow me to play quarterback and by the AH my first seven games of my sophomore year return punts my first two years in the NFL return punts but going they're going to the University of Notre Dame especially with all all guys And we had a curfew so it was like a military school to a degree. I guess and I wasn't a good student so I you don't like I spent went on two dates my first two years. same girl names Margie. broddrick still remember Margie. I guess rounded up become president of a bank can Chicago somewhere in children got married and all that but I just I had to. I played football. I studied and that's where that was my life the first two years of my college experience and then I I shot pool. Also that was my other thing is We had a pool. All Eh place called the huddle where I used to go and spend an afternoon. All my classes were finished at one. o'clock both semesters I just like that way. I'm an early riser. This or anyway I always have been so my classes were done and then And then you know I had the afternoon for either football practice or they're off off-season go shoot some pool and then go to study hall and and try and keep my grades up. I I wasn't. I wasn't a good student when I went in but I graduated. I think with the three zero when I left so I worked hard at trying to be a good student and this is the thing that this is the thing that when I think back on my career we see young guys coming out today and gus you play that Senior Year of college that Fourth Year College you grow physiologically you grow. Psychologically you grow physically you grow mentally That's such a critical period for young men and young women and we seat in particular young guys coming out after their. You know their redshirt juniors and they come out early and they're really not ready for our gain. You see it in basketball football more than anything that some of the tragedies and basketball young guys just not able to deal with the road and you know you're coming into a man's world it speaking specifically of of football world And you're you're coming into an adult world where all of a sudden you're a you're a kid really. which is your kid you? Don't you think if figured it out but you Abbott. I've always said that there's no way blake go right from high school and play in the NFL. There's just like basketball like there's a few. Yeah but like even a you name a shack or Lebron James or anybody they could never come out and play professional football they would just get an isolated. I remember there was talk about. lavar airing Jim. If there could have been someone it may be was him but it was not real no. I don't think anybody ever play the game now. I agree with you. It's not realistic Joe Do you remember the first. Snappy took his quarterback for the Irish she was at like your boss more year then or when did you when they would have been my sophomore year. Actually it was it was the seventh was against. I think Pittsburgh alert my sophomore year because what had happened. We were getting ready to play Pittsburgh in the seventh game. I was returning punts my sophomore year with Bob Legend Egede we were the punt returners and then Terry handwriting. who was a heisman? Trophy candidate you know. Rocky was in the backfield and Jerry was the quarterback be more in Stereo rate on the cover of sports illustrated as a dynamic duo right and then I think it was a Friday afternoon. Terry we were running short yardage and goal. Linux Terry got his knee rolled up on and era. Had Coley O'Brien who had quarterback Notre Dame in nineteen sixty six to national championship. And then he had a guy named Bob Belden were to seniors and meet. So the and Terry Wheeler Four quarterbacks Jerry was the starter got hurt era ahead Coley to go to if he wanted wanted to but he put me in and I asked him many years later why and he said I just felt like you were ready to play and I thought wow you know I just you know all of a sudden you go from punt returner which basically happened that in professional football for me to you step in the huddle. And here's here's a team. That had won a national championship two years ago. And you've got all these all Americans and now you know it's put up or shut up time right and and You know we. Fortunately the first two games only played the first half because we had like forty plus point leads and we played the University of Southern California out on the coast and replay them to a I believe it was twenty. One Twenty one tie played retired him twice once seventeen. Seventeen seventeen I think at our place and in twenty one twenty one that year and that was OJ Simpson. He was a senior. It's the lowest total in college that he was held to rushing in nineteen sixty sixty seven. Yeah we were a it was unbelievable. I mean so many guys if you look at take that national championship game between Michigan State and Notre Dame. I think there's somewhere in the neighborhood at twenty plus guys went onto professional football off those teams. It's like a racing game. It was. I mean it was it was it. Was You know it was unbelievable but I I don't you know it was. I do remember the game and I don't remember the first snap but you know the other thing that happened to me in college by name was changed a lot of people there in the story. You know I can tell it if you want. Yeah they've I had a really good junior year and so i. I only played three games by software. Your junior year. Roger vowed to Siri was our sports information director. So Roger Calls me in the office he says Joe Heading pronounce your last name I speed. He Says No. It's not it's actually seismic. I said no Rajasthan. They should know Joe Excitement as Gimme the phone so I call my dad back home in New Jersey and anytime I ever talked to my call. My Daddy always say faraway Joe Donaldson. I don't foresee pop. Got This question for you as far away during the dad telling you. How do you pronounce are less tame? There's like this dead silence on the phone and my dad comes said Sunday Sunday. You're all right. I mean you're a senior college. You don't know how to pronounce your last name. What's going on I said? No I'm okay that just I'll explain it later. He's telling me. How do you pronounce our last name? He said he's hung up to fly. Said rides what my last name is Steven. I know I just got phone. My Daddy suggested is a trophy out. There called the isotope does best college football player in the country. We we think you have a chance to win that trophy. But we're not just going to count on the reputation of the University of noting nor your athletic skills but we think just simply changing the pronunciation of your last name from appeasement so he's meant to rhyme with Heisman we can get you that trump and that's how I became Joe sized and have to. Well did I mean it's been about fifty plus years.."
