Vision Loss, American Academy, Europe discussed on Dr Bernie Portner, The Moving Body
American Academy off demolished recommends by the time you're forty if you've never had an eye him to get one. It's these subtle changes. Can even start these signs. We can see on exam. You may not notice anything wrong with your vision. Like like Europe patient who had twenty twenty vision, which we considered to be pretty good, right? However with the loss of the side vision, that's a lot of vision that you can lose before you even notice it and even if you have twenty twenty vision. You may not be able to get your driver's license. If you have a lot of side vision loss so best to catch this early. So that we can do something about it. So if you haven't had an eye exam and around in your forties or over getting that baseline exam is a good idea. Not only to check for glaucoma but for other conditions. All right, like cataracts macular degeneration, which we can actually see on exam, and you may not even notice that you have it. So other things that people ask us about glaucoma is can anything be done to fix that vision loss? You know, we we have a lot of patients who come in. We diagnosed with glaucoma they've already lost some of that side vision. And they wanna know if you if you start trading it will that improve over time, right and. And. The the pardon me. The short answer is unfortunately, not. And that's why we actually really feel that you screening eye exams and seeing people early running these tests this laborious as they can be sometimes to to sit there and take the test, and it it is a really good idea. Because for instance, something like cataract if your vision gets bad from cataract I've seen Dr Riyadh Dr Torah juice, doing amazing cataract surgery work, and I've spent time quite a bit of time in doing cataracts myself, you can improve vision from almost nothing back to full vision. A lot of times it's just a miracle almost and it's such a privilege to be part of that to return site because that's sort of like taking the lens out of your camera and putting a new lens in this this clearer and can get a better, focus glaucoma is more. Like, it's kind of the wiring system of the eye. And it's the way I think of it. It's it's. It's everything between the I were you receive the light and the brain where you process that light. And so you can have a perfectly healthy I perfectly healthy brain by glaucoma hits that passageway in between. And essentially if you can't get the light signal from the of the brain, you can't see the cable is broken. Yeah. You can't send the message to your brain. Or it's it's going to be an inadequate message. So once that damage is done since it is nerve tissue. Unfortunately, it doesn't regenerate reversible damage, and so the earlier we catch it the more we can slow it down. But if you wait like the gentleman, I talked about until you have just those little islands of vision laughed. That's the best you'll ever have, unfortunately. And at that point, we we really have to go full court press all how to try to stop any further loss. But it's just such a better idea to stay ahead of it. And to you know, if you treat it early you can prevent yourself from having to get to some of the more advanced treatments for glaucoma, and there are certainly people who've lost all of their vision from glaucoma and gone entirely blind. The good news is most forms glaucoma slow. But it doesn't mean that they might not catch up with your eventually. And so again, it's it's good to get in and get screened. Entertainment screening, I guess tests that we do in the office. You know, we all test your vision, we check your eye pressure. Of course, the pressure is one of the vital signs of the is something we always check in our patients, even.
