‘Lockdown’ is a British dictionary’s word of the year.


Locked down. That's the word of the year, according to Colin's Dictionary lockdowns defined as the imposition of stringent restrictions on travel, social interaction and access to public spaces. Collins Corpus looks at both spoken and written material from things like books and websites to TV and radio and found a 6000% increase in usage of the word lock down from 2019 to 2020. Other pandemic related words and phrases like social distancing, furlough and self isolate, were also on the dictionary's top 10 list. Jennifer Jones Lee
