Listen: Marcus Mariota, Tennessee Titans And Mike Gabel discussed on Howie Carr
"From your patriot days by fable the rookie head coach of the Tennessee titans with that win over Jacksonville on Thursday. They're seven and six and they're in a legit position to make the post season probably knocking overtake the Houston. Texans who have won nine in a row heading into this weekend in the AFC south. But depending on what happens with the Baltimore Ravens this week in the Tennessee titans may be in that number six spot the second wildcard spot before this weekend is up and I'll tell you what they haven't been a great team. But I watch ray-ban that sideline. I watched the highlights a him before games putting on a blocking pad working with defensive players. You know, what it is that guy motivates players to want to run as you say through a wall for him. And you got to be proud of your old teammate for what he's done there in Tennessee, very proud of Mike Gabel and everything that he's accomplished as a as a teammate. He was really the same way. The guy would run come in run on a treadmill? He would you know, go on special teams and the scout team and play defense rundown on kickoff. I mean, the guy just loves football. And he was very very very very, very smart. Very smart. He was one of the smartest players I've ever played with I knew Mike would eventually go into coaching. I thought eventually he was going to beat Ohio State head coach, which they probably should have made him. But just really proud of Mike man, and you could tell the relationship that he has with the players the players respond to them. They work hard. They respect him. They know that he's a good guy. Mike's a good guy, and I'm just really profit the success that he's having right now. Although I'm not a big believer in the Tennessee titans. Going anywhere. You know? I mean, you kind of look at their schedule to got the giants and they've got the Redskins and their toughest game will be against the colts. But you talk about the Tennessee titans. Gone far in playoffs. I'm just I'm not a big believer of that team. I agree. I don't think they'd go far in the playoffs. But to get to the play offs at the giants. And then home for the Redskins home for the colts. Yep. That's a worst nine and seven, right. I mean, they they might be ten and sixteen and depending on what happens with Baltimore who've won what three hundred north Lamar Jackson. The fact is they might get in. I mean. Yeah, they might not get far, but they may actually be playing playoff football come the start of the year here. My question is this question to you is this you look at Mark. Mariana. And and kind of like you get really excited he gives you opportunities. You really get excited about him. And then all of a sudden you like the same. Oh markets like where where are you at with him? Are you like a big believer in him? Is he a franchise quarterback? Are you giving them one hundred thirty million dollars? No, I'm not even sure I want to pay him twenty some odd million next year is a fifth year option. I don't think he's good. I don't I don't see it. I don't know. What people see Marcus mariota? Who think? He's good. What does he do? Well, I don't know. Rodney you watch the tape. Is there anything that? Okay. So you can move in the pocket. Okay. That's great. He's got some legs fine. But in terms of his passing abilities. I don't see any improvement. I don't think he's any good. I think he's a gimmicky type of guy that if he's got to stay in the pocket. He can't he can't do it. So is Marcus mariota franchise quarterback. I wanna pay five years one hundred twenty million wherever the heck the money would be the answers. Absolutely not. I don't think he's very good Rodney. Wow. Wow. Yeah. He's he's he's very mobile. A lot of times, you know, he'll scramble and he'll make an incredible player. He'll run for a first down you like. Oh, wow. And then he'll come and make the boneheaded play. And you like why would you do something like that? Do we give him a pass because he's such a good guy? And it's just such a really pleasure to to to know in and just because he just cares himself as opposed to Winston that. That's exactly the point. Because he is compared to Jameis Winston because Winston went one Mario to went to in that draft. And while both of them have not been good on the field. The fact is Marcus mariota has been a darling off the field and James Winston's name is the one that's been synonymous with problems. And you're right. I think we give Marcus mariota a pass because he's not Jameis Winston off the field, and it kind of masks the problems that he has on the field. But in terms of on the field. They'll let's face it. As as nice guys. He is Marcus mariota is never really. Learned how to play the position. And that was a worry coming out of Oregon with the spread offense is he had never taken a snap under center. He's he's he's still raw quarterback that isn't getting better. Don't you? What four years, and I kind of disagree with you. I think he's got the better this year. I think he's starting to see. And this is Matt Lauer floors offense coordinator his first year under him. He was with Sean McVeigh last year with the Rams as a quarterbacks coach, I think he has gotten better. I think things are starting to slow down a little bit. And I think when you have a new offense coordinator, you have a new system is gonna take time. And I think they're going to keep them because you're not gonna get very many quarterbacks that first of all he's got experience. I mean, yes, he's been hurt. He's got experience. This is his fourth year next year will be his fifth year. If you start over first of all, you're not gonna get someone in free agency. That's good enough to replace him. But then if you start over what a young quarterback, you never know what you're going to get at least, you know, what you got right now, and you can develop this guy. I do believe that he's going to be their franchise quarterback. I think if he can stay healthy. And if he could just continue to progress with his offense. Coordinator. I think he's going to be very very solid. I don't think he's gonna be great. So you have good expectations for him. You actually I do have to be a good NFL quarterback. Good kid works. Hard wants to be good. Good heart. I I think I think that all pays off. Or maybe a look they're gonna pick up obviously, he's going to be there next year because what's the risk? Okay. Paying twenty some odd million next year. Okay. It's a lot of money but quarterbacks make a lot of money. But in the end, they at least have some time to decide do you give him that major contract that we've been talking about? So. Yes.."
