Listen: LA Clippers, League And James Harden discussed on Big Time Basketball
"Schedule week. You're a hater hater. Sorry sorry because if I could just look at seventeen and three and the bronze the greatest thing in the history of the world but you can kind of dive into their schedule a little bit. They've had some good wins. I agree but can we make this into the Luca Danni just five minutes. What about your boy against the clippers with some big strong physical defenders and I was kind of digging? I think Leonard and Paul George are guys that are like old school defenders kind of bigger with Luca if he was in the old school and he wasn't allowed to do whatever he wants whenever he wanted. We would see a lot more games like that CERRUTI. Yeah listen that was the first first real test and you know he. He didn't have a he he had an okay game. He didn't have a typical Luca game. I mean he was Oh and elevate from three like he wasn't very good but you know I think he's going to have the up and Downey's ts twenty years old scalise twenty years old. He's going against maybe two of the best perimeter defenders Interleague. So listen and we're going to be honest you know. That was the same clippers team even minus sir. Paul George. The shutdown the Lakers in the season opener. So I I you know I don't know I I don't. I'm not surprised by it. I just don't think that you know. I think when Luca is sort of a one man show that he sort of is in Dallas. And he's going against two great defenders I. I guess I wasn't very surprised by that. So let me. Let me clarify my comment. My point is I think when you think back and and by the way Danny Aines agrees with me on this there are some real dudes at play defense back in the day like their pride. They hung our hat on it. They chat they were like into a it. took the individual challenge night in night out. It wasn't like what we see now and I don't blame the players for being the way they are now. The officials don't allow guys to really get down and defend be two way players but I think when you talk about him being an all time great I kinda put him into the whole thing with metal bats and moving the fence in in baseball. Twenty eight or twenty yards or whatever. Maybe but my point is that these defenders back in the day they would like take that individual challenge and make make tough for him. I'm not sure you're allowed to do that anytime I see a player. Say All right. I'm going to stop right here. He cut the guy off one way. He cut the guy off the the other way. beep whistle blows all of a sudden now like it's almost like you're not allowed to play pressure deepens and the only guys I feel that pressure. The ball are the LA clippers. I feel like they play top hard nosed man to man defense and that is within the confines of the rules. So I'm not saying that every defender Leonard and Paul George and pat bed back in the day. I'm not saying that I'm just saying you were allowed to be more physical which as an offensive player will throw. Oh your rhythm off. If you're allowed to dance do whatever you want to get your rhythm. Yeah these we're GONNA have the PR's like we talked about with these guys through the roof but if you're getting everywhere or you go into hard fought game then it the end result is not going to be as pretty as what we see right now. We talk about James Harden's whether or not his style that works in the playoffs and obviously Luke only twenty years old and we anticipate is going to be in the playoffs. I am really interested to see how that works out. Because you know as the game slows down there your possessions and as you said Eh defense sorta ramps up like it does in the playoffs. Lucado has a little bit of harden game. I think his game is isn't as offensive to some people as James Harden's like because he does a little bit more the things he gets a little bit more of his of his teammates involved but I- amateur to see this mavericks team. Obviously we've got a long way to go. But how they look and how. Luca looks in a playoff series. Seven games against the Saint Ain't potentially seven games against the same team. They're able to sort of really game plan against what he wants to do. Offensively I it's I'm not saying he's GonNa get stopped heels. I certainly don't think he's going to be putting up. Thirty point triple doubles consistently and playoff games. I guess I'll say that so. I guess I'm a little bit with you on this Guy Ryan is that what is that what you think about. I WANNA ask Ryan this question question do you think the officials have been the most consistent in any year we've ever seen about staying true to the lack of physicality as the seasons going along and you know how it is you have these meetings in the preseason it starts out you're like what the hell is this. It starts to regular season. It goes for about two weeks aches and is slowly but surely start lightening up on these new rules in a game is the same in the playoffs but this year in particular it seems like they are staying inconsistent with their calls. In my opinion you see it the same way I do I do. They call more touch files. I think they call more flagrant files. I don't know if the the numbers bear that output games I watch around league. That's not a flagrant sure enough. It's a flagrant one. Somebody ends up shooting. Free throws also seem to me scale. They're calling more traveling's than they having your pastor calling that more consistently as you know in years past. That was a point of emphasis for those of us who go watch Summer League and sit in the gym all day in Vegas Frustrating because these young officials they call everything every touch file every time a guy slides his foot inch they call a foul or travel and the game takes forever and usually as you mentioned scale as time goes on you get into training camp camp and the preseason and then especially when you're at this point in the regular season basically twenty games in whatever was discussed over the summer among officials historically goes out the window and it's you know back to the way it always was that hasn't been the case this year and it's really I think that ties into what you were saying earlier about. What the three top? PR SEASONS IN NBA history of happened this year. I think that's a part of it as well. There's the contact is being enforced. It's being called consistently like it or not that James Harden and Luca and Lebron on these guys when they want to get to the basket put their head down they can shoot an insane amount of free throws and Seems like that will continue at least in the regular season but scale. I think it'll change in the play offs. I don't think we'll see a playoff games where it's Houston against Dallas and harden shoots nine thousand nine free throws and Lucas shoot seventeen. I don't see that happening. I don't think that's what the league like wants so it'd be interesting to see if that happens when that happens. How those star players adjust to the way? The game is being called when the playoffs. Come around Ryan. Let me follow up with this. WHOA during those meetings they superheated when you hear these coaches like? I can't coach like that. Who the WHO the hell could play defense like that? What is to get to the end result? What is the process like yes? The League has been very good under Adam. Silver's leadership about soliciting feedback from teams scale so so every year the general managers in Chicago at the combine. It's a three or four hour meeting Right before the combine get started and the League sends out an agenda. They'll have talking points that they I wanNA talk about whatever's Topical League. It could be officiating this year. I imagine to be instant replay and how that's working out. It could be whatever about the TV contracts tracks it could be about issues around the league. You know mandatory drug testing whatever it is but then there's also the team the ability to submit agenda items and if they they WANNA make a presentation teams given the ability to make a presentation about say officiating or about the way the Games are being called and as you can imagine what we've been talking about on this show relative to James Harden in particular. That's the one. That's a point of contention especially among teams in the Western Conference and even more so Oh among Western Conference playoff teams play James Harden into the playoffs teams. Do make presentations. They try not to make player specific. Because it doesn't you don't make it seem like you're airing in your grievances or just bitching about one guy getting all the calls but you would look at as far as how the rules are interpreted enforced. You can bring video evidence. You send a presentation to League advance if you could even put on film and watch it with Adam. Silver and people from the League office in the room and say is that a foul or not is that a traveller not and then it sparked some pretty robust and conversation that at times can get heated among people from the League office the officiating sector and team executives the bucks. Here eleven game winning streak one of the other guys were talking about. WHO's on record? You know who's record-setting pace pr wise Janas and he's a guy I think is is the favourite for the MVP right now. You've got a long way to go but I don't see that changing anytime soon but the interesting thing about the Buckeyes is the best record in the League now leads. I sat eleven game winning streak. But they're also they have a bigger point differential than they did last year which led the League. All all these statistical science will point to the bucks being the best team in the League and unlike the Lakers cours they beat a lot of teams with winning records including you know they beat the rockets. They beat They beat the jazz. They have some nice wins under their belt. They beat the clippers. Granted was out without Kawhi in that whole load management. It'd be Lasko I'll start with you Ryan like I feel really comfortable about picking the bucks in the finals. I had them against the Lakers in the finals. I feel really good about it. Are The bucks the best team in the the league. I mean it's it's hard to say because we don't know what the clippers are right now because they we've seen guys miss a lot of time but you can you comfortably say the bucks of the best team in the League right now. No I think the clippers the best team in the League now that they're at full strength watching them last night demolish Washington. I know. What's The Washington Wizards? And it's on the end of a long road trip. What they're the one team? I've seen that it full strength. Now that they have Paul George alongside Kawhi Leonard and Mantras Herald Lou Williams coming off the bench. I sit there and watch him play. And even though I'm not with a team anymore thinking thank God. I don't have to play against those guys you know. That's a formidable group with their talent in depth and we've talked about just how balanced balanced. They are how balanced they can be with their offensive defensive abilities and their bench strength so I think they're the team. I don't think that will play out over the course of the regular the season. I do anticipate that Milwaukee will have the best regular season record again this year as you guys know they want sixty games and had it a year ago but just look at the schedule guys. I I know my fired western conference GM. So I'm probably biased. But you know teams Milwaukee's GonNa have to play the rest of the season compared to what the Lakers have to play. Or the clipper schedule or really any Western conference team. So I think they'll continue to run through the regular season. I do think Janas will be in that leading pack you would be my mvp at the moment as well but just watching the games and looking at you know who. I would and wouldn't like to play against in the playoffs if I could pick any opponent. I'd pick Milwaukee to play against rather than the clippers because again the clippers scare me the death. If I'm going to on the other side are two things should. The Washington Wizards changed her name to the generals. And do I right now. Do I cap out on the Atlanta Hawks right. Well it's tap out. The fight might have been called me informed. Sixteen it might have been called call. The while ago scale. Cerruti and I had the bulls aren't doing a lot better. I think the Hawks are sixteen and the Bulls are six and fourteen So you know in the Western Conference is Davis visited. Excuse me in. The Eastern Conference is David Fidel. Says and only a few games out of the playoffs the right there right there but Atlanta. I'm watching that game against Houston. I know it's Houston You know but that was a little bit problematic to me. If I'm hawks fan or coach or executive I didn't feel like they competed. When you're down fifty four points and James Harden's doing his thing and it just didn't seem like they fully competed trae young as great Adjust the suspension to John. Collins really hurt the hawks but yeah I think they need to find a way to get better defensively. They need to find a way to play tougher. And Be Grittier. uh-huh so yeah this is not. I didn't think the hawks are GONNA be a playoff team this year. But I don't think anybody myself included. Thought they would be four and sixteen and getting blown out as much as they haven't. I mean scale I tried to give you get out of jail free card. I trying to help. I'm going with David Biz tail on this one. There are only three games but their three. I say this is that even possible. Now there's something wrong with the NBA. Hey when the hawks put together two good weeks and they could be back in. There are three games out. But you gotTa Orlando's in the eight spot right now on. Orlando's had their injury injury issues as well boot. She's been out. They've Lost Gordon who just recently came back so I don't I think that's a little bit of fool's gold for any of those teams the bottom of the Eastern conference like I the hawks. The hawks are so so bad defensively. Now I I mixed up the Hawks and the and the wizards earlier because obviously the wizards gave up one fifty last night to the clippers but those teams are like I mean they are the two of the worst.."
