"Field Sunday Michael wilbon on PTI Rams Jared Goff fifteen touchdown passes. Just to intercept over his last six games. Coming up Monday once the dust settles on week, fourteen in the NFL, we talk who runs the NFC Aaron Donald for MVP, and the playoff picture becomes clearer. Plus, we have a Heisman winner out of all of that who won Bowie can can we go Monday at six eastern ESPN radio is PNT. Under the hood with Jonathan. Under the hood with Jonathan hood, weeknights on ESPN one thousand. Hoodie. He's got the night off Chris black. Fred hubner. We've talked a lot of bears and Rams wanted to get into a little bit of baseball. You want to jump in three one two three three two three seven seven six the winter meetings begin on Sunday night. I've been watching all week long a watching MLB network and Bill Kenny. I watched him. They got a great show on tomorrow called the business of baseball. Okay. At it's with Brian Kennedy. Dan O'Dowd who used to be with the general manager of the Rockies? Now, he works for the network, and they have four general will they have Mike Rizzo recod? The Braves GM Alexandroupolis and also Dayton Moore for royals at a talk about the business of baseball. It's a Saturday show for an hour. But all week log on. Be it a boarding David show with clips of it, and it talks about how they do different things and put their scouting together at all the analytics and all the other things really good show. Whenever learning a lot actually watching it. But I've been watching also this week just to try to keep up with things that are happening. What that happened? The other day is that the St Louis cardinals got better. They side a Paul Goldschmidt. Who is a very very good player. One of the best players in the National League. One of the big power hitters in baseball. Would you say he's maybe top five in all baseball position players. Not that goes pretty close pretty close. He's pretty close outfielders. You there's good outfielders. But when you look at position players, he's pretty close. He's consistent. Yes. Pretty consisted. What he's there. I feel bad for the Diamondbacks. Here you see a guy k Bob, you get you. So to a certain point, and it goes away. But the NFL said Troy, you guys have asked this question throughout the course of the week. A lot of people say the cubs are still favorites. And things like that. If you agree with that. That's fine. Three one two three three two three seven seven six you agree with are you talking to cap right now anybody that's out there that thinks that asked him that question yesterday. Yeah. I I heard. Yeah. And he still thinks the cubs are the TV division. You know, if if a lot digs happened. Sure. But. You got the brewers cardinals get better. And the Dow the cubs could have to do something. But BUSTER oldie with Golic and weight goes, hey that National League central Thurgood we pretty active at this off season. I've heard from agents that they feel like the National League central teams. Generally, speaking of been some of the more active teams, you know, the reds also are out there trying to do things as well. You know, the cubs are not going to do as much because they're bumping up against their payroll, limitations. They're trying to be creative. They're telling other teams that they're open to talking about some of their young position players in a way that they hadn't been before. So we'll see how they respond, but. Yeah. And the cardinals strategy as well as proven from the past they liked to get in the stars. Is they near free agency. Like a guy like, you know, Mark Maguire a guy like Matt Holliday because they believed that the player will fall in love with the market, and then they can sign them to an extension. So this is. Just Paul Goldschmidt dropping in for one year. Perhaps. So he was interesting to way he said the cardinals do that they're doing they were Paul Goldschmidt who will become a free agent in a while. But the more important I think, and this is something that I'm not a fan of. But the White Sox are doing it. Everybody's doing it in all sports. And there's a reason behind it is that if you're not going to be I, you know, in the words of Ricky, Bobby if you're not first you're last, basically, if you're not gonna win it all you got to figure out ways to get better. And BUSTER all these said that there's a trend that the one thing in baseball. The worst place to be like this in all sports is in the middle. And there's also I think in baseball a trend up stay out of the middle. This is what the Seattle Mariners have done. You know, they one eighty nine games and they still finished fourteen games out in their division. And so they decided you know, what we're not going to be good enough to catch the Astros. We're not going to be good enough to catch athletics. So we might as well go to the other extreme. And I think that's what the. The Diamondbacks are doing as well. They're looking at their division saying we're not good enough to catch. The dodgers. We have to try to get our payroll and order, we have to try to build up the form system, and you know, Jerry DiPoto, the general manager of the mariner said last winter it's feels like there's almost as much of a race for the number one pick in the draft and baseball these days as there is for the top of the division in. So teams are trying like crazy to avoid that middle ground. And that's what the Diamondbacks are doing with this trait now as as an old timer. Yeah. The old timey guy. Oh, you're talking about yourself. Now. You know, this is something that I hate seeing it all sports. But there's nobody asked me they're going to do it. Anyway, they do it in the NBA. They they don't do it necessarily the NFL 'cause you really can't take the NFL. Okay. Yeah. Sixteen games you can't necessarily tank. He got fifty three guys. It's a little bit more difficult it baseball. He brought up the perfect example Seattle played really well last year. And now, what do they do with their movement guys all over the place the Arizona Diamondbacks? They finished third in the west. But they're not going to be able to catch the other teams of the dodgers. You know, they're not going to be able to catch these teams. It's like it's like what's the alternative? And it's get, you know, get rid the guys at start the rebuilt while the White Sox started that a couple of years ago, and I was talking to Sean earlier shot Davis, our producer and John. Did you say this is like a two year this two year anniversary of the White Sox rebuild? Yeah. Yesterday was actually the two year anniversary of the trade. Chris sale. That was the beginning of the full end for the rebuil-. Yeah. So it's been two years and a lot of people look at the White Sox roster. They've spent like I think the rosters like fifty billion dollars this year with teams are worried about state under the, you know, the the the number right now the luxury tax number, which is like way up there. The White Sox did spend one hundred twenty billion. It's still that be close to the number. Yeah. But the the the Saxon spent only like fifty, but you know, a lot of teams are starting to do this. So if you're the old guy on the young guy at the station, and this is where we both agree because this is terrible for baseball. And you mentioned, you know, we don't have to worry about it in the NFL because a parody and the team, right? So much bigger that teams on tank the NBA actually can get by with the tanking because the stars in the league derive the league. And what I mean is night tonight. You can have matchups of bad teams who may have a star to or some intriguing players and the league isn't necessarily suffering because people wanna see young Sacramento Kings team play young Phoenix Suns team because they like Devon Booker. And they wanna see this canes team if they're actually for like, there's all kinds of intriguing that the problem. Baseball faces. Because it's one hundred and sixty two games and the star power of baseball players isn't the same as other sports. When you tell people that a third of the league is taking that kills your sports. So like, you can do all the market research. You want on millennials generation y generation Z generation anything, right? You can do all this market research. Young people are on their phones. They don't want to go to baseball games because they are phones attached to their face look at that kid. He has a phone on his face. That's the problem with baseball is that you have what six teams that can waste off. Then you have thirteen teams. They're all racing towards the bottom. You've a couple teams in the middle. But so so play this out in your mind, right? If the majority of the teams are trying to lose what is baseball. It's every day. So have you tell me Kansas City in Texas are playing each other for four games set that is four days of someone paying no attention to that right because. Okay. Then take two more teams. Let's go to Miami. And let's go to Cincinnati. I know since aim might be a little bit better because BUSTER mentioned them in the car. Last year. They had sixty seven wins. Okay. You have sixty three wins in Miami and sixty seven and with Cincinnati. That's a four-game set. Four more games of two teams that no one cares about. And no star power in no entry any kills the sport. Chris. But you talk about that. You're absolutely right. But then you have I can't tell Houston Kansas City and any other team in Florida or Miami. They won championships doing it that way, you know. So I can't say that's not the right way to flip. Team trying to do it. Astros and the cubs too. Yeah. I understand. Why teams do it? Yeah. It's terrible for the long term future of the sport. Get why the franchises do it because it works because young players in baseball are the best players in baseball. Yeah. All of these teams have won recently. What's the main? Oh, yeah. They're all they're all young guys because they all are from teams have tanked hit the bottom. They get all these draft picks. And then boom, they're good for a few years. And it's it's frustrating because people want to cut the season short, right. They want to eliminate innings. They wanna put runners on second base when the gained extras all this stuff. That's not what baseball is losing phantom. Baseball's phantom because half the teams suck was the other early. This morning, George will was on at George will was interesting because he said, basically, he said, I write about politics. So that it could supply supply being off Twyford it could feed my baseball love. So. He was talking about it a couple of different things. And he mentioned he's for Washington. He talked about the nationals. And he said there's no reason to bring it Bryce Harper. He didn't say it outright. But he said what's the point in them trying to get Bryce Harper to stay? He said they have enough money. They're going to have to side Anthony read doled, and they have guys that showed that their young players who can play. Soto bless. At Eton in the outfield and Michael a Taylor. They have other guys why spend all that money at a guy like Bryce Harper. And what are the owners of the day? I show what are the odors, Mark leader? Yeah, he is. Yeah. He was on a one zero six point seven the fan in DC talked about the nationals. Basically they're out they made their offer. And we gave them the offer we told them. This is the best.."
