Listen: President, William Rehnquist And George W Bush discussed on Thom Hartmann
"Riday. Richard in Evanston, Illinois. Hey, richard. What's on your mind? All right. You were called back a while ago. I'm gonna I'm calling about the electoral college importing Japan with not import our beef. This is maybe fifteen twenty years ago. I was in the business. Yeah. This is during the mad cow scare. Yep. Yep. Yep. Thought it'd be we still, you know, have laws that don't allow people to photograph mad cows being slaughtered for our great option. So my call was we were talking about the voting machines. But I kind of think the steak is not too clued the electoral college when you're on that topic is well as putting it in the constitutional framework because it's our most sacred, right? Is the vote your vote counts? Yep. You know, you they can steal it. They can take away your right to vote. But even if people people to the president. The my phone ranks are even people the president of the electoral college factors, you're only when for the president. That's the only place for the HR colleges involved. That's the point you would it be acceptable vote for your governor. Such a way your Senator your house of Representative person alderman. Now, we need to do away with the electoral college. And there's this this fair vote dot org is the website. There's an organization that has put together this initiative and once enough states sign onto it that they represent a majority of electoral college votes than those states all commit to throw their electoral college votes toward whoever wins the popular vote, regardless of what the electoral college vote is regardless of how their state went. And so that would create a national, you know, the real vote, whatever you call popular vote for the presidency, and it would render the electoral college irrelevant. And without a without a constitutional amendment and the and the group that is blocking. This is the red states red states are refusing to go along with this. We just added one day. I think it was Colorado. Just added added themselves to this list recently. But we're still I think about seventy or eighty electoral college votes short yet. I was just going to say all those things whenever we talk. We shouldn't just talk about one of those three or four things that are have, you know, a the flaws that ought to be all put together and put under the Republicans would do talk about your sacred. Right. Right. And then pointing out that you don't really have a right, but your vote of the president and essence does not count. Well, as getting on the state, you're it as as William Rehnquist famously wrote in his decision in Bush v gore two thousand where George Bush claimed that if Al Gore that if the votes in Florida were actually counted as Florida Supreme Court had had demanded if the votes in Florida, we're actually countered it would quote cause irreparable harm to plaintiff, George W Bush. And of course, I mean, that's literally from the from the from the lawsuit. Right. That that if they got the vote it will cause irreparable harm to George Bush, and that's why Bush pursued gore and in that decision Rehnquist in his decision. William Rehnquist chief Justice of the US supreme court and who made his chops back in the sixties in Arizona big bear of guy six to two hundred pounds. Big guy used to stand outside of or in actually inside polling stations in Hispanic and native American communities and just give people hell if they were trying to vote and William Rehnquist wrote, and I quote from memory, but I'm pretty sure I'm quoting word for word. There is no right to vote for the president of the United States in the United States constitution, and and he was right through and it was. Yep. Yep. And we need to fix that Richard spot on. Thank you for the call Glenn in New York City, Glenn what's up. Yeah. I think we should call it FDR, socialism FDR. And they're making did and is near the word liberal making slender it. Yup. And and every case they get and if they let him argue enough DR. Yeah. I am an FDR liberal. I am an FDR progressive. I am FDR socialist. And that's going to cause particularly young people to go back and go who who is right? And and that's and that's a good educational process. Glenn spot on thank you for that Michelle in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. Michelle, what's on your mind? Anytime. I was calling to follow up from the discussion the other day about Fox News and the Colt light thing. And to just put out a story is my family about Pat Robertson. This Solomon has been added from the seventies and eighties. And if you're somebody who believes in his right-wing ideology, he says in a little bit of scripture, and Willie has some people totally convinced that he is the authority God speaks to him. And he really put out a lot of Willie people that who listen to him are not able to think for themselves and unfortunately in my family, I had some elderly elderly billing towards retirement relatives who lost a substantial amount of their savings because this lawn told people that God told him that the stock market was gonna crash and they went out and and some very poor financial decisions. And I see this with him. I."
