Listen: Derwin James, NFL And Pittsburgh discussed on WAOK Programming
"And from that point on the fourth quarter who was all drama the end result. Well, the chargers beat Pittsburgh had to rally from sixteen points down at the half but managed to get that win and stay within a game of the chiefs atop the AFC west improved to the rest of the NFL. They are a force to be reckoned with it's after hours with Amy Lawrence on CBS sports radio which is the game. You're most looking forward to week fourteen. We've already got one under our belts with a record setting night for Derrick Henry titans against the Jaguars. And that's just the appetizer. For what's to come. One. Of those games will be the chargers hosting the Bengals in week fourteen trying to get that tenth win on the season. And we're really excited to welcome Derwin James the rookie defensive back for the chargers who's got three interceptions in his Ma as among those players being mentioned in the breath of best rookies and rookie of the year endure when we're excited to get a couple of minutes with. Thanks so much for joining us that gave you guys played against Pittsburgh. Last Sunday night was really awesome. Can you tell me what was going on at halftime? When you're down on the road and facing that uphill climb. To remain. You know, remain calm. And you know, so just not look at the scoreboard, basically having a mindset of you know, that we're not playing the way with play for the opportunity. Second half display. We came out in the second half is cute it and finish the game. How finish? Yeah. For sure. Being able to come out of the locker room on the road in hostile territory back's against the wall. You hold the Steelers offense to only seven points in the second half. How did you feel like the defense perform differently in the third and fourth quarters? Yeah. Effort, you know, everybody stepped up on from beeline for the secondary. And then. Over great team win. Because like I said we had a big plays on special teams. And then we have also once you get involved. So it was a good win and such a huge moment to for Desmond king as you're trying to come back to even tie the Steelers. He breaks through seventy three yards for a punt return. Touchdown. Not sure what your perspective was Derwin, but what was happening on your sidelines. Everybody's going nuts. I mean, it was it was excitement everywhere. Okay. All year long. He's been a great return. And he's just been worn guy one block away scores. But we know space. The opportunity to happen. Guys. Great job locking for. And what you're seeing the crew hit it and also a great job of converting to charges in a relatively big back in the game sixteen you guys had obviously put together a nice win streak earlier in the season. And so you've had some success. But this is on the road against a team that's fighting for a division title hostile territory as I said how big was this win. Exactly derwin. To me was one of the biggest window season. I feel like it was it was one that we really need it. And like you say Rome with their Pittsburgh interplay. So, you know, like, I say if it a lot for our team, you know, getting w as we enter into week fourteen we're spending a few minutes with rookie defensive back Derwin James of the Los Angeles chargers after that huge victory in Pittsburgh their home to take on the Cincinnati Bengals and Derwin. You guys have had a bunch of success as I said, but what did you learn about your team as a whole after this win in Pittsburgh? That we don't just say fight each other. We don't just say it. Just being down in diversity owner roll with things. It's not more. Right. You know being able to battle back. It's such like Lao environment. He knows it was a. The type of thing we have. We have an under the lights and I good team. Good. And all of this happening in your rookie year. So your first year in the NFL coming from Florida state Derwin? What do you feel like has been the biggest adjustment for you? Biggest adjustment. Minutes because you know, what you're watching. You're practicing stuff is is like no more school when leaving. So it's like this job. Versus a nine to five. House is going, you know, you're actually going to work the play football. There's no better feeling. So you prefer studying the playbook instead of going back to class. Of course, I like to ask a rookies what the biggest difference is in the college game and the pro game. So what's the biggest difference for you? Biggest different. I'll say. A lot different. I'll I'll say that the speed of the quarterbacks because on some great quarterbacks out there. They started Tennessee. Like, you really got in on this. You can't just get away with doing stuff every week. You ought to change it up. So I'll just say the quarterback in a lot smarter is just the speed at which you got running four six four seven on the eternal college. So I say speed and the quarterbacks in college. Well, I'm glad you brought up quarterbacks because that's where I was going next. You obviously have one of the greats on your team and Philip rivers, plus an incredibly versatile running back. Melvin Gordon though, I know he didn't play last week. He gets the Steelers when you do have the chance to match up against those guys in practice. What's the first thing you do to try to contain not just Gordon but a quarterback who can hurt you in a variety of ways. I'll just say make sure everybody's going to have job because any little weakness or any little false step. You know, they can they can tell what you're doing. They'll take advantage of it. So, but that's. Gotta get those guys. It's great to have that often. Nope. Neighbor to cork and some training camp as know? Once a week. So, you know, it's it's good to have players and so far so good. You guys are nine in three just behind the chiefs in the AFC west taking on the Bengals week fourteen. We're spending a few minutes with rookie safety Derwin James of the Los Angeles. Chargers. It's after hours here on CBS sports radio. So I know you have three interceptions this season. But what's it like to snag one off of a guy like say, Ben Rothlisberger? Like you did in Pittsburgh last weekend. It's a great feeling 'cause. For me in a rookie this growing up. You know, you watch those guys, you know, they they become your idol show. Just to be able to make plays. You know? Flex is. Really exciting. It makes the game more. Much more fighting. Like, I said, I'm just happy to be NFL player. So did you have a welcome to the NFL moment that moment where you kind of pinch yourself and you realize holy crap. I'm actually here. I'll say in practice just dealing with those lines. Sometimes you they handle, you know, they they can welcome. You to say that. I mean, they're not gonna take it easy on you. You're a rookie. Welcome is what they're saying. How about in your locker room Derwin? Are there guys that have shown you the ropes a little bit that you feel like really helped you get acclimated with some wisdom that they could share. Really? Phillips. I'm the type of guy, you know. I think everybody so I'm learning. I thought that there. Both of you know, they they they know how to launch. They're not constantly learning. For different is I'm always that data's trying to learn as much as I can for my teammates, especially with those guys already been in the NFL football. I was just learning everything not only are you getting help from them. But you're getting a crash course with the team that's got a lot of promise in this next month of the regular season. But how much did going to a school like Florida state with so many guys who've made it to the NFL help prepare you for what you're going through? Now. Because I feel like I'm, you know, company NFL prepare, you know, just being on the coast Fisher system like you say play division, one gods and gods that you don't make it to the pros for like just prepare MIR Florida where I am now, you know, just how how practice Iran factors, and, you know, prepare yourself for the games, you know, it's a little different. It's different wording. But we kind of use the same kind of. Credits for there goes Kelly. And I'm sure they are really proud to watch what you're doing on the NFL's stage Derwin James of the Los Angeles chargers with us here after hours on CBS sports radio. So the most important question that I need to ask you is. Are you having fun? I know it's a lot of work. And I know that there's potential playoffs in the future. But I really want to know if you're having fun. It's so much fun. I can't I can't tell you how what type of locker room we have the type of type of chemistry. We have a team would put the worst because I've been in a lot of you to my career on different levels. And like I say this is one of the best ones. I haven't been there. Just guys in the people. You know, I look forward to going to work every day with the people that I work with. Just to be able to say that I place. That's awesome. When it doesn't actually feel like a job. Can't can't wait to go to work with those guys. Like, I said the coaches make it fun. But you know, we get the work that we need to get you know, so. I love LA. And you're back home in Los Angeles to take on the Bengals in week fourteen a chance to get to double digit wins rookie defensive back Derwin James of the chargers. Great to spend a couple of minutes with you. Thanks so much for the time. Thank you for having me. Well that is. It's a game that you think. Okay chargers. They're going to end up scoring a ton of points. Right. Because we know the Bengals defense is piecemeal now and Cincinnati is going the wrong direction. But it's also a game, which you look at as a sports fan, or as an athlete, and you think okay, I can't take my foot off the gas or my team can't take its foot off the gas because you just came up with this hugely emotional victory had to dig yourselves out of a hole in Pittsburgh. It's like a playoff game you prove so much to yourselves here. Irwin talk about what he's learned about his teammates, and how much fun the locker room is how how hard they're working, but how much they're enjoying one another's company. That chemistry is clearly a major part of their success. This year. But it could all go up in smoke poof, if they don't take care of business against the Bengals. And you're probably not going to circle this game and saying it's one of the ones I'm most looking forward to unless you happen to be chargers fan or you happen to be a Bengals fan. Actually, if you're a Bengals fan meager, not circling it. This is the NFL though. It's pro sports and everybody gets paid to play. And so they can't. They can't come off of that victory in Pittsburgh and have a letdown because then it goes into races all the work. They've done to this point. Not to mention if you look at their schedule coming up in week fifteen is the game on the road at the chiefs. And so inside the division. Of course, they've got to play the chiefs twice and they started out the season losing to them thirty eight twenty eight. But we fifteen they get to go to Arrowhead. You don't want to go in having had the misstep against the Bengals sue either get caught looking back at what you just did against Pittsburgh or looking ahead to the game against Kansas City. You wanna go into that game with major momentum and their case having a three game win streak, and that'd be huge. Right. 'cause they essentially a race. The tie-break if they would beat the chiefs then they would have split the season series. So the head to head wouldn't come into play. So they try to get that obviously major confidence boost and and another game. It would take approved themselves that they were major contender. But if you lose both those games to the then you have to win the division outright as opposed to just matching them stride for stride. So that's coming up in week fifteen. We're not there yet. What's the game? You're most looking forward to week fourteen. You can find me."
