Listen: FDA wins case against stem cell clinic that blinded women
"All around the US, there are clinics that claim to be able to cure ailments by using stem cells from your own fat. But for one Florida based company, their stem cell treatments have blinded at least four people now the FDA has won a legal fight to regulate such treatments, national health reporter, William Juan following it all for the Washington Post and spoke with komo's Tom hutler. So what is this company? What was the company US stem cell doing what were they promising patients for for years now? They've been doing this procedure where they basically liposuction. They suck the sat out of your belly. The it in a centrifuge to isolate a certain type of cells in there. And then they reinject in whatever part, it kind of ailing you, if you have a kind of a joint, if you have everything from like Parkinson's disease in your brain to people who are losing kind of slowly, losing sight to macular degeneration of so they would inject back the cells into and they said, you know, this treatment has helped people walk again has helped. People recover from longstanding injuries. But it has also led to further injuries Elliott for women who got this injecting. There is lost all site went blind. Wow. So there have been four cases of blindness here. So what has the judge ruled and what does that mean for this company? Sure. So the judge who'll just yesterday. She confirmed FDA has to regulate procedure, though is under dispute because there's hundreds of these clinks around the country doing procedure, so that's significant. And then she also ruled that DA is entitled to an court order, that basically tells company decision company you have to halt this procedure so that order is probably gonna come in the next few days. And the company has said today this morning and they've halted that procedure already with even without the court order. What about the process itself? We hear about it is there enough scientific evidence or is this anecdotal that these actually help the patients that they're supposed to help? The thing is that it's all anecdotal whenever a new treatment comes out like a new drug or a new procedure often what comes with. It is a lot of scientific data that says, you know, in double blind, trials and clinical trials. This is what has happened for these kinds of procedures. A lot of these clinics are kind of banking on the hype around stem cells, here's come so all the time about how they're the, the future of medicine, how they could lead to cures for banking on that kind of height, but not enough data not enough. Studies have been done yet to show. It works on any of this stuff, especially in the way they're doing it. Other types of stem cells embryonic themselves. And, and these are very different types of adult stem cells. Coming from your fat. It works in a different way. Very interesting into anxious to see what"
