California - LA school shutdowns raise stakes of digital divide for students

The Los Angeles unified school district is working to make sure all students are connected online learning an estimated one hundred thousand students in the nation's second largest school district are not connected according to superintendent Austin Bruner the great big digital divide many of spoken about his very real in the communities we serve since campus is closed two weeks ago he says only about sixty eight percent of high school students have been participating in online studies on any given day in addition he says there has been no online contact with about fifteen thousand high schoolers although a couple thousand have been connected in recent days due to the district partnership with Verizon it's simply not acceptable that we lose touch with fifteen thousand young adults for that many students aren't getting the education they should be viewed here says they also continue to operate more than sixty grab and go food centers for those in need they will remain open during spring break and until at least
