Listen: Blake Bortles, New England Patriots and Jacksonville Jaguars discussed on ESPN Radio
"Seven to nine three seven seven six. So the second slate of matchups or you know, usually the games where you're trying to figure out how bad or good. Your your local team was and then you get into the prime time before you get into Sunday night football on Sunday. We got at four thirty the Jaguars and the New England Patriots the quintessential important matchup of the weekend. Ain't no bigger moment than week to. I heard that once before Jalen Ramsey talking big big, you know, what out there to rob gronkowski. And Tom Brady. I don't think Tom Brady and those boys fall for it. They go about their business as usual now if they win or not that you know, that that still remains to be seen Len. Four net. If you look at that injury report, there's not a lotta guys on his injury. Poor for the Jacksonville Jaguars. In fact, there's only one and that's Leonard fournette who was questionable with a hamstring. If he can't go you've got what Corey grant and TJ Yeldan and Blake Bortles, ladies and gentlemen here have have at Jacksonville offense. Now. Now, we know that if you go into scheme up a defense Bill bell is one of the best to ever do it. And he's also a guy who seen this Blake Bortles character in the in the AFC championship last year. He's seen him before he knows what he's going to provide the wide receiver core is a bunch of young guys. I don't think anybody who's really separated themselves yet. They signed Dante Moncrieff in the off season. Still haven't seen him breakthrough. I don't know if it's all going to be on special teams and defense. But if the Jacksonville Jaguars win this game they're going to have to hold that that New England Patriots team the under twenty points. I don't know if that's going to be the case this Sunday. Yeah. I mean, the defense is going to be tested obviously against this patriots team not having for net. Obviously a huge factor. They won four games last year with Leonard fournette, not hitting a hundred yards from scrimmage. You know, one of those games against the charges a really good team south team last year. But for the most part they didn't beat the best teams in the league compete with the elite teams without a great game for for net. The easy thing to do is just say, no Frenette jazz don't have a chance, and obviously that's a major factor. But how about somebody putting some pressure on Blake Bortles prove that he's more than a game manager? This was a team that was right there. They were right there. They were beating the New England Patriots on the biggest stage sort of the Super Bowl. They had it right there. And they decided to go conservative now. Dave Ramsey things. They went conservative because it was a coaching here. I think the Jags went conservative because nobody trusts Blake Bortles at some point. I understand that there still isn't a ton of confidence in the Blake Bortles. But if you want to Super Bowl if you're going to get to a Super Bowl, he's got to be something more than just the average game managing quarterback into me. Sunday is more about who is Blake Bortles since last season. Then for net for net is huge. He's a huge factor, obviously. But Blake Bortles with or without for net was going to have to win this game on Sunday. And if he doesn't step up and decide to make plays decide to freelance a little bit freestyle do things maybe that aren't in the playbook make plays then the data. We're going to have a problem either way. And I think that to me should be a bigger storyline. Blake Bortles, and the fact that he has to be something more because if he's not this is just another playoff team. It's not the team that was right there with the patriots last year hoping into Super Bowl. See I think the the decisions and the things that you talked about Blake Bortles is who he is. You know, he'll have a game every once in a while. But what separates the decent quarterbacks from the really good ones in the really good ones. From the great ones is the consistency of those performances. Now, you can you can ask yourself. What does he had around him? The the last few years to really talk about that, you know, Allen Hearns now Robson, of course, island Robinson gets hurt. Last year gets a big contract to go to Chicago. He doesn't have any him anymore. Dede Westbrook is a guy who still trying to learn his way as an NFL receiver after his rookie out Oklahoma last year. There was some things some things that you saw there DJ Chuck they've got some guys, but there's nobody who really you can count on as a young player. And and I hate to talk about Blake Bortles in the sense of being a young player. Because now he's like a young veteran three or four years league. You know, Pat, Mahomes has Travis Kelsey Carson Wentz last year had Nelson galore and alshon Jeffery and Zach ertz and Trey Burton on that stable running backs. I think Blake Bortles is only good enough. And when you're only good enough, you gotta have something to to complement and the complement has been Leonard fournette, and even Leonard fournette coming out LSU, the reason why a lot of people were not souring on him. But you know, he was saving himself because of the amount of touches he had as a collegiate player because a high school player. I mean, you look at how many times he he was asked to to be the best player on his team in take teams. Two state titles, and then to ask you see championships and all the other things he was asked to do a lot of a lot of miles on those. Yes, so and you're saying it now with a hamstring pull whenever you see these soft tissue issues that the players had this early in the season. You can either talk about what they did in the off season. Or how healthy they were coming into this season. If Blake Bortles going to be at thirty plus touchdown guy, then you're definitely going to get fifteen plus interceptions. And that's what separates the really good ones from the average ones in the end. I don't know if it proves they're legiter not in a in a regular season game because I still expect Jacksonville especially because of that division. I still expect Jacksonville to be one of the players when it comes time to get into this playoff action. Jacksonville defense is good enough to carry them through a sixteen game season. Do you have a quarterback that can sustain or when when you're when you defense or special teams go away? Do you have a quarterback that you can look at and say, you know, what we we we we busted to coverages we getting gashed on def- on in the running game. We've got a specialty. Teams turnover. We got too many penalties and special teams. Can you win this game force? And a lotta SE teams turnaround that aren't New England and our Pittsburgh and say, no, we can't. So I think Jacksonville is is is one of those teams in that situation. Let's go all the way out to Hawaii. Dan wants to jump in on this Jags conversation, Dan, you're on Freddie and Fitz on ESPN radio with Myron and Jason what's happening. Hey, how's it going? Love the show guys. Thank you. Yeah. I was just calling to say that the Jaguars won three games last year. Without Leonard fournette whatsoever. Okay. Do you think that when this one? Going to be tough for sure obviously the best team. They're gonna see all season. But about like they haven't done it, especially recently regained by. And they want all three of them. So yeah. But winning patriots. I mean, the patriots is a different. It's a different deal. Listen markey's. Lebron out is a big factor. Too many injury to Marquis leaves. I see a big factor. Blake bortles. So you can't forget that. Blake Bortles to me. However, you gotta make a decision about who this guy is. I understand we say that he is who he is. He is gay manager. This is a franchise that had a chance and an opportunity offseason to taste. Somebody else. Does say look we're going to go out and get a quarterback because we've got this. Great defense this great running back. We're going to get a guy in here who can throw the football. They instead said we're going to stick with Blake. And with that comes an expectation that you can somehow advance and continue to grow as quarterback. This is a team that was right there with the New England Patriots. And I understand the easy thing to say is it's a regular season game. It's week to no big deal. How deflating will it be fourteen? If you lose the AFC championship game that you should have one. And now you come on Sunday, and you lose to this team again to me it becomes a factor down. On the line. If I'm a teammate of Blake Bortles, and I know I've got a running back who can't stay healthy. And I know I've got receivers who are missing. And I know I've got challenges with this offense. If I look at Blake Bortles in this moment on Sunday, he can do nothing. I've got zero confidence in him going forward. If we see a team like the patriots in the playoffs. Again, Blake Bortles has to at some point a certain himself at the dude who's going to lead these guys to something more than what they've been in the past. That is the assignment that's why they kept him and didn't go after someone else we need to start talking about Blake Bortles and that expectations which should be on top considering everything that has been invested in him. And the fact that they could have got someone else. Nikola got someone else to lead this great defense, and they didn't do it because they invested in blackboard. I think going into the season. I had limited confidence in him. So I think I'm just getting reassured. And by the way, for Dan in Hawaii those three wins last year came against a Houston Texans team that that did not have the Shawn Watson Cincinnati team that syncing. Natty and a trash Indianapolis Colts team. So they have three wins last year. Nothing that you could stay up stapled to the board say, yeah. Seeing that I know they can go out and beat the patriots this week. I'm just saying seven new coaches when Owen seven in week one. What does that mean if anything we'll talk about it next right here on Freddie and Fitz Simons on ESPN radio?."
