Listen: Ellen Reid, Pulitzer Prize And John Pulitzer discussed on All Things Considered
"New sounds. Hey, John, Jamie. All right, John Pulitzer prize award winners were announced just this afternoon. Who is the winner in music the winner in music. They're actually two winners this year. There's the usual annual prize which has been awarded to Ellen Reid specifically for her opera prison, which was debuted in LA. But then the the jury also awarded a special citation posthumously to Aretha Franklin. Now, people were watching this closely because last year, of course, the Pulitzer prize went to Kendrick Lamar, and this is a prize that has normally been the province of contemporary classical composers. So they've kind of reverted to form here. Although Ellen Reid is a very welcome winner. She's been here in our studio as a co founder of the Luna lab, which is a project that brings young women into the field of composition, but she's also a terrific composer herself. And I just wanna play an example of Ellen reach music. This piece is called Orlando anti-racists."
