Listen: Jets, Sam Darnold And Todd Bowles discussed on WOR Programming
"Seven ten W O R sports zone with Pete McCarthy. Coming up. Our jets conversation. A couple of things one. We know Todd Bowles is on the thinnest device he's gonna have to see. So let's be real. Mike maccagnan. No a bowls have been fired. There'd be a lot more attention on the jets general manager, and I'll give him full props for landing Sam darnold that is a huge plus in his favor, but these other draft picks than he is had. And now Darren lose one of those picks that was starting to finally work out as Louis having a solid season for the jets up to this point. And now he's suspended the final four games violating the league's substance policy. Come on. Is not a good look for Mike mcalinden as we close in on the jets begging decision as far as his future goes in the next few weeks here, and Gordon Amani should seems Buchanan's likely to stick around. I really wonder why. Your landed. Darnold. That's great. But they haven't done anything late in these drafts. You'd think a couple of guys would stick around as backups or some kind of pieces for you. Find an extra linebacker off of lime defensive. I'm whatever in the third round and beyond. And they haven't done that at all. Jamal Adams keeper I Sam darnold keeper otherwise. And look at this roster. How many players d look at on the jets and say, oh, yeah. That guy's going to be a big part of the future, even Leonard Williams. Now, you start to wonder about going forward is he's going to start to get expensive. You have to make a decision you want to extend him or do you? Let him walk towards free agency. He just hasn't been the kind of impact player that you would have liked to see from a top ten draft pick offensive line a number of holes. The jets are going to have to go out and fill this off season at wide receiver. Yes, they've had a number of injuries, but nobody is truly separated themselves even Quincy a new law. Who's the most talented of that group hasn't been able to do that here running backs? Isaiah Crowell has been okay. But you don't feel great about him being the running back next year. A defense. You have so many holes to fill and when he has gone out and spent he spends it somebody like Jermaine Johnson who pick six this Sunday aside as been a disaster. And even after the pick six when the titans are on their game winning drive is picking up another fifteen yard penalty for grabbing a guy's ear hole. Come on Johnson. The single worst penalty and moment, I think for the jets this season when against the Cleveland Browns. The jets got a stop on third down and Tremaine Johnson. Shoves the ball into Jarvis Landry stomach and picks up a fifteen yard penalty that allows the Browns continue their drive. The jets had all of the momentum in that game. Up until that point. Then those are the things that drive you nuts about Todd Bowles too. Because this team just hasn't been disciplined enough under him and the players say they're not disciplined enough. And while they don't want to put it on the coaching staff. When you hear multiple guys say, we got to be more disciplined. There's only one place you can look for that. But mcalinden. Yeah, he hasn't been a prize either. And if you're gonna you know, the jets, they got commit one way or the other. I if you do commit to McCain, and he's got to be your guy for the long-term. He's got to be the guy with this head coach you have to them together. And that's what makes it scary to move forward mcalinden as the general manager because you don't know that he could truly do the job when you have this lack of faith coming from mcalinden in bowls to one another as far as you know, who's gonna make the correct decisions there, and they don't necessarily believe any or have the belief that the other has confidence in. Well. How would you neither one of them is exactly been terrific at this job? And I get you want to have stability. And you wanna you don't wanna be turning things over every other year? I get it. But these guys have been given ample opportunities, they're on their second contracts and things have gone further. In the wrong direction than get better. As we now are almost through year four. Bowls experience and the to put it all on bowls. I think is I think it's wrong. Now, it might be more on balls in mcalinden sticks around he gets to make the mex- coaching hiring. But that's a big higher, and it's a lot of faith mcalinden here. And again full props to them for getting Sam darnold and jets uniform. But these are key years for the jets you've looked at the teams that have been Super Bowl contenders. In recent years, they've done it with young quarterbacks young quarterbacks that are cheap. Now when you could go out and afford a terrific defense. Go out and afford weapons on offense. You wonder how the bears got good so fast this year, Zach Mitch Trubisky is great because Mitch Trubisky is decent, and he doesn't make Jack squat and you could spend all that money on Khalil Mack. And that defense and give him Allen Robinson out wide. That is what makes you a contender? The chiefs were Patrick Mahomes. They have weapons galore. Why is that because they can afford to have those guys on their team with a quarterback who's making anything yet? Russell Wilson Seattle up until he signed that big contract. They had a lot of talent around him. Now, they have to ask him to do it all it becomes a different situation. Look a Matthew Stafford in Detroit and make so much money. They can't win with that. The dolphins have experienced it to some degree Ryan tannehill. The ravens with Joe flacco. A lesser degree. The giants with Eli manning. If you hit your wagon to the right quarterback is making a lot of money. You'll be okay. But you gotta have a great quarterback in that situation. If you have a good quarterback, and you give him that much money. You're not going to have the town around them to actually win. And that's been the biggest competitive advantage in the league that separates teams of the last few years. The Rams Jared Goff is having a young quarterback than is inexpensive that you can win with Carson Wentz. And the eagles another one. So these next few years with Sam darnold you need him to develop quickly, and you need to be able to put star power around him. And so it's not about winning five years from now it's about winning as soon as next year. There's a lot of big decisions and the jets they've all that money to spend a hundred billion dollars against the cafe could spend. And they have to spend it wisely. They had the draft a whole lot better. And they have to nail this head coaching pick. Because if you get that wrong, you're wasting the big three years that you have with Sam darnold is after that, you'll be paying him, you know, market rate. And and what he deserves earns whatever it is twenty million dollars plus per year. And gets a lot more difficult to put a competent football team around a quarterback in that situation as the nature of a cap leak. It's also why you know, the games they're playing with Sam darnold. I just don't understand at all the guy needs to play. Now, he's been hurt. The last few weeks. He's had a strain in his foot. You don't want to put them in a situation where he's going to get hurt. Again. I get that. If he didn't practice during the week. You don't want to throw them out there on Sunday. He is still a rookie get it to some degree practice this week. He has to start on Sunday. What is the game of not making the decision as to whether or not he's going to start until Sunday, or at least not making a public until Sunday. Why why in the world would you bother with that? There's not necessarily a downside. But there's no upside either. This is say yes Sam Donaldson gonna play on Sunday, Bing, bang, boom. Everybody knows is a case. Anyway, I don't get why you want to be cutesy with this kind of stuff. It's a competitive advantage. Really? I'll see how. This is a playoff game anyway on Sunday stuck as playing and Donald might very well. No. But tell the world these plan was a big deal. I don't get that. And he has to play. You know, something now that you start to worry about with darnold. Did he's got guys reps. He's missed the last three games get out there and play just got to see some of these is in the division. And he's got to see buffalo for the first time. See New England week seventeen who knows what kind of game plan. The patriots be throwing out there. But that will probably be a meaningful game for the patriots considering they're playing for home field advantage. And they are you know, one of the interesting teams around the league this weekend, which will get to coming up. We'll get to the giants as well as they'll be dealing with a familiar face in this town. Mark Sanchez the starting quarterback for the Washington Redskins this weekend. And what the giants could be looking to do here is, you know, Dell Beckham junior's says they want to Wrexham seasons. That's the mindset that they're in. If we're not gonna make the playoffs. We're gonna take somebody else out of it. And you like to hear those kinds of things from the giants. So what can we learn about big blue this Sunday against Washington? And if you've reached a point where you just brute against both of these teams in try rooting for draft picks in the past. I've been in favor of that. I'm not so much in favor of that this year. We'll talk about that. When we come back sports."
