Listen: Giants, Eli Manning And Odell Beckham discussed on WGR Programming
"Top story on ESPN dot com. Jonathan is that Odell Beckham junior. The giants is going to be out for tomorrow's game against the Redskins with a bruised quadriceps. I'll tell you this much saw OB J last week at MetLife stadium. I was there covering the bears and the giants and he played really well so disappointing for him. And for the giants fans that he's not gonna play tomorrow. I saw ally. Manning play one of the worst halves of football that I've seen a starting quarterback play. And remember, I covered the Chicago Bears for ESPN. The bears. I have had to endure the likes of a tod Collins a Jonathan Quinn. A Chad Hutchinson. The list goes on and on and on. So I am quite familiar with subpar quarterback play. Wow, Jonathan now he picked it up in the second half. And they won that game in overtime. He had a beautiful throw up Odell for a touchdown in the second half of that game. But cheese. They need a quarterback in New York. And there are several teams that are in the giants situation where they've got veteran players that just aren't doing the job well enough now, and they got to address this in the off-season some people say that allies the best option for the giants quarterback next year for me, man. I don't I don't see it. They gotta draft a quarterback with their top five pick. Otherwise, they're going to be in quarterback purgatory again next season. Many of us. Wait for veteran quarterbacks to age and quickly in this game right Rothlisberger. Brady drew Brees. Quarterbacks are thirty and older. And when I see align manning, I could see that the end is coming quickly. You know, that is the case because when you have to dynamic players like LBJ as well as saquon Barkley grind the football. You would think that ally would be able to have more of an reporter with those players. But when you see Eli out there, it's almost like you just a little bit of a step off. He's just does not have the timing as he wants did and happens to everybody everybody in that league. So when I watch ally, you could just tell that is just does not sync up with his players. Now what they utilize it offensive line. There's something that been talked about in New York for years like the offense allows gotta give you lifetime. But Eli manning to me just seems like that he is. It's accelerated on him to the point where I think the end is coming pretty soon here for him new team, maybe have a fresh outlook. But it doesn't look like he's going to be in New York for the long haul here based on. How he's played just he looks older than what he really is. He's got a roster bonus do the fifth day of the league year. So right now, there's nothing guaranteed on his contract. If they exercise the bonus, and they have them on the team next year at seventeen million, which isn't a lot. I starting quarterback, but they have to begin this process this long long overdue. You know, he's not playing like Ben Rothlisberger is playing he's playing like drew Brees is playing. Now. Look, we can have this conversation separate from the is Eli a hall of Famer conversation 'cause both you and I think he is no question about Mr. abilities remarkable. It's remarkable you pull up his career numbers. You can set your watch to ally. Manning playing fifteen sixteen games a year. It's amazing the yards on for the touchdowns. He has turned the ball over a lot. Any is a fairly is very average quarterback lifetime quarterback rating. But the guys are two times, we're VP. He beat the patriots twice of all teams if Kurt Warner's getting in getting in. Yes, you can had that separate. But the giants should've done what the ravens did the Jaguars should've done what the ravens did. It least. They've got Lamar Jackson. In New York. They're making a big deal. When I was there last weekend that Kyle the Letta was being bumped up from three to two right? Does that a long term solution to this problem? Jacksonville. The AFC championship game last year. It's all falling apart this year. They gave morals and extension. Was it the best money spent? No it'll end up costing them some cash because six point five million of his salary for next year is fully guaranteed. But there's no one waiting in the wings. It just shows you now more than ever you've gotta find the young quarterback. You gotta draft quarterbacks on a routine basis. I can't stand when these teams don't do it. And the bears did not do it for the longest time police, they found Mitchell Trubisky, but they neglected that position for years under Jay Cutler, and he just got lucky that they were able to get up and get your biscuit number two overall last season. It's the Ron woolfe theory as a general manager for many years with the Green Bay Packers of trying to draft or at least get yourself some quarterbacks in camp. So you could see with the next generation is what's the next guy that could be able to replace Brett farve Rogers. And I think that's always a smart way to go. You mentioned Beckham. We wanna make sure that we understand people understand. I think we all know that old L Beckham junior's a great player, but he has the more receiving yards and touchdowns and has almost as many catches this season as the rest of the giants receiving core combined. So this is what they're missing against the Redskins coming up on Sunday someone that that's much of a difference maker with seventy seven catches over a thousand yards six touchdowns this season. And so now it's up to Corey Coleman and Russell shepherd and Fowler to be able to somehow some way pick up the slack off pensively with ally slowdown and well the giants being four eight. Yeah. They're they're not a good team. You know, they got lucky against the bears. Were flat. And they were playing their backup quarterback last week. No matter your giants fan. This is a blessing in disguise that Odell Beckham junior's not gonna play. So you can lose some more games to end out the season and get a higher draft pick be look. Ally is it's almost over. They I understand the temptation to take saquon Barkley but looking back on it. If they don't get the quarterback they want in the draft this year was that the right choice over some of the other quarterbacks that were available this past spring. You will know when the giants find another head coach because if you're going toward the trend of trying to find offensive geniuses, and there's a number of them out there collagen pro that you can bring in to try to jumpstart your offense saquon Barkley can be as as viable as a receiver as years running between the tackles then. Yes, it is a good deal because you want your running back to be that ultra back. They could do multiple things because that's what it comes down to we talked about how the difference between the NFL say ten fifteen years ago. And now, Jeff and what you don't have running backs to score a run between the tackles and saquon Barkley can be that viable safety net or a quarterback. They can't get the ball down the field, but they can depend on Barclay to run after the catch, man. I mean now you got a real fine. Now, he's he's a terrific player. But if he's just one-dimensional, no that's not necessarily the pick. But I think the Barclay can do a lot more. I agree. I agree. I mean, there is there's question because of the position being devalued, and we talked earlier in the show about the Kevin Siefert. Mike Sando piece on ESPN dot com. There are fewer rushing attempts per game on average in the NFL this year than ever before. It's a passing league now. So teams are going away from that trend if you're going to take a running back that high. He better be the next Barry Sanders. That's all I'm gonna say, right? He better be berry Sanders. He's a very talented player. And if you do find the right quarterback now you've got to two pieces in place, and you could be a really special offense. They are by the giants already told you that ally was almost done when they gave owed Al the contract like they they showed you. We know does. I mean manning is trying to force that bell that ball to Beckham. And you could see back on put his hands up like what's going on? They are their timings off their rhythms off. And it's only a matter time, maybe he would have been better off in Jacksonville this year. Would have been better off drafting a quarterback and trading. Eli the Tom Coughlin in the Jags. That's not the upgrade though. That's moving sideways. Manning with the Jaguars think about that. Would you rather have ally manning or would you rather have Blake Bortles? I mean, I mean for all the things that just said about Eli manning. Yeah. It doesn't matter. Joe flacco will be the quarterback in Jacksonville next year. Anyway, I guess what we'd have to see it to know it, right? I mean, it's one thing to say I'd rather have him because he's a hall of Famer. And because he's he's a proven winner. I just like to see him in a new environment. See if he gets renewed refresh because otherwise it's going in the wrong direction Rogers in some ways, we're Aaron. We gotta get to that. We'll talk about a little bit about the Packers coming up next as well before we get out of here at the top of the hour. Speaking of the NFL tune in tomorrow for football doubleheader as the colts.
