Listen: Alex Smith, Washington Redskins And Kirk Cousins discussed on Thursday Night Football - Jaguars at Titans
"Twenty one past the hour. I've always liked Alex Smith. I think he's a guy that kind of turned around the career way seemed to be an all time boss after being a number one overall pick by the San Francisco forty Niners added Utah use an urban Meyer guy, Utah. The first couple of years in the NFL, Alex Smith was flat out terrible. It really took Alex Smith. A long time to become a competent quarterback in this league. And he's been pretty good. Last year with Kansas City is really good. Ten games with Washington. He wasn't special nothing great better than Colt McCoy, obviously. But the devastating broken leg. He suffered a couple of weeks ago, and it looked bad. I mean, if you've seen the video of that injury, it it was bad question about it. And now we find out that he had developed an infection after surgery back in November. It's a broken fibula and tibia. And the report is that. I mean, he's dealing with incredible complications, and he's had to have multiple surgeries on that leg. And that as of right now, it seems that this potentially is career ending. This was week eleven when he was hurt. And he's been in the hospital since November eighteenth. So he's been in the hospital. I mean from November eighteen it's now December sixth going into December seventh. He's been the hospital now almost three weeks. It'll be who knows when he's coming back. Adrian Peterson said earlier today that that players on the Redskins visited him in the hospital last week. That's awful news. I mean that is terrible news. Unbelievable news. I doubt injury that he suffered and the pictures of his leg gist. Strange angle, it just looks like it's a question, Mark. It's just not good. And you know, Joe is one of the most devastating leg injuries in the history of football. Who's a legendary industry Lawrence injury with Lawrence Taylor sacked him. He came out and he said it reminded of his injury. Redskins releasing a statement earlier today saying quote on behalf of Alex Smith. We appreciate all the concerns in prayers over the injury incurred on November eighteenth against Houston Texans. Although this is a serious injury. Alex and his family remain strong. We would ask that everyone. Please honor the Smith family's request for privacy at this time. Wow. That's that's bad. You don't want obviously. You obviously don't want. This to end his career. And. I mean. You know, I'll just tell you you never want to see a player's career end in front of your eyes. He's thirty four thirty five years old. He has four more years probably. He's really come into his own the last couple years as I said to think that an injury like this would end Alex Smith's career would be devastating. And the fact is for the Washington Redskins is an organization, look, Alex Smith is in great. And I don't think you're gonna win a Super Bowl with Alex Smith. I don't but he brings stability to that position. And he's a guy that doesn't make many mistakes. Alex Smith isn't gonna turn the ball over a ton. He's not it's not as game. It doesn't take a lot of chances. He's not gonna toss the ball down the field left, and right, but he doesn't make a lot of mistakes and turn the football over and in today's day and age and football your quarterback is competent enough where he's not costing you games. Then you hold onto them. There's a reason why the Washington Redskins thought, you know, what we'll let Kirk cousins go. But we'll bring him in Alex Smith. So you know, I mean, that's what it comes down to. Ever washington. It's like this is a cursed organization. Right. It seems like it's a cursed organization every time they make a move, okay? Bringing RG three has a legendary rookie year. And you just say to yourself. My goodness. They finally got themselves that franchise quarterback. They haven't had since Joe FIS men, and we're gonna go, and you know, they're going to be fine for fifteen years at that position. Next thing, you know, RG three comes back down to earth. He's figured out. He's a gimmicky quarterback in they're terrible. And he's done and the Redskins are back to losing. Then they get Kirk cousins. Who by the way was in the same draft as RG three. And he's putting up big numbers. They kind of screw things up by not giving him that big contract. They keep franchising him to where it becomes financially impossible to hold onto him. They screwed that up. So, you know, that's their fault. Now, you bring it Alex Smith, you think. Okay. We've turned the corner we bring in a competent quarterback to take over from Kirk cousins. And okay, we're in first place right there in the first place the time in the NFC east. At six and six and three they lose that game to the Texans by two after Smith is knocked out. They lose to the Cowboys lose at the eagles. Next thing. You know, they're six six, and let's face it. We're not getting any better. So the Washington Redskins aren't gonna make the postseason. And if they had Alex Smith, you have to say to yourself, maybe there is a shot that they would have made the postseason. Maybe they'd beat the Texans that game. Even if they lose the Cowboys and eagles are seven and five a home game against the giants at the Jaguars at the titans hope for the eagles. Heck, they may have won ten games with Alex Smith this year, potentially won the division or wildcard. But obviously that's not going to happen. Now, if Alex Smith at this point, we don't even know if the guy's never play football again based on the fact he's been sitting in a hospital for over two weeks now dealing with multiple surgeries and complications and infections stemming from that gruesome broken leg suffered back on November eighteen you feel for the guy. No question about lot to get into the NFL."
