Listen: Episode 118: surviving winter, with the Arctic Gardener
"And Go Leo Seven. Who all left reviews this week gave me that warm fuzzy feeling you so important to get me through these cold winter months? Because I'm I'm telling you it's cody mouth is right now. It's seventeen point eight degrees centigrade. That's sixty four point four Fahrenheit for those of you in the United States but I am guessing that conditions in Oslo in Norway are a lot more severe for most of the winter and I spoke to unders Reneburg okay who is a psychotherapist and a house. Plant grower extraordinaire. I'll let us introduce himself. My name is On the bank. I think I'm known as the Artistic Gardner on Instagram. I'm a farmer but I'm I live in the city center of also capital of Norway and the in my daily work. I were as a psychotherapist. Because I'm also psychiatric nurse and a dollar just but I have a huge passion for plants and And I just Came out with a book called the Green Joy Brilliant. And I'm really excited. Is it about this because I think so. Many of us are struggling right now with that shift from Moma times to cool the times and the effect it has on our plants. I know that Norway has perhaps a more extreme winter than we do here in the UK. Tell me what the conditions are like right now for you outside. And how do you keep your plugs from suffering come November December January time yes These are really the the icon the month of death on November December and January because especially in Norway. It gets really really dark during the wintertime. If you go up north in Norway the son is totally gone for a couple of months. So it's really hard conditions for the house plants So what I recommend people do when they asked me for advice. And what I do with my own house pence I said I get them as close as I can to the window. So they get the little Daylight that's available so they get the feeding from the lights And I also It's a simple rule that AH reduced everything in the wintertime. I reduced amount of water and I reduce the amount or actually stuck personalizing my plants from October. I'm so much and how good is other windows in Norway. Do you find that problem where we sometimes we get here in the UK with old houses where you get a really early cold area right next to though so although you want your plot to be close to the window the light. There's also the issue of the plant just getting too cold right next to that drafty old window. That's true but the actually Norway quite opposite problem because the new housing and the new apartments there so closed because of the cold So there's very little draft and what I see is that it gets drained or In Norway often. So that's that's a bigger problem than than draft Coderre from windows. Whatever you do? There's there's an issue isn't there a say here in the UK. Often a lot of us have got very drafty cold Window Sills where I want their plans to be on the one hand but also. I'm worried that they're going to. They're going to suffer. Are there any plans that you find. Do that. Really suffer particularly during the winter months. The ones that you really should be paying the most attention to this time. Actually most EC plants are the KOCHTA and the super limps because they are a desert plant so And they cope quite well because in the desert. It's quite cold during the nighttime so they're actually quite fine As long as they don't get too much water and and fertilizing and the more the tropical plants are difficult thing in Norway debate because of the dry indoor air but also of the cold so Tropical plants are are suffering. Is Everything that you recommend to people. With suffering from dry air in terms of improving air quality and making the Arab moisture. I recommend choosing the right plan choosing being in more of a cook. The soup lint these more district plants Because they can cope also better with the dry indoor air and the colds old so if you want More tropical plants it's Tien they might survive Especially if you've got a A bathroom with heating in the floor. And there's a lot of moisture from the shower and buffing That's a good place for the tropical plants but they can be hard it can be hard conditions for them during the wintertime in a in a normal living room. I think one of the plots that I've noticed on your instagram. That really piqued. My curiosity was a keen replugged a growing indoors. And I I never imagined that would would tell me more about your Indo Kiwi. Yeah actually I am I kept the indoor for awhile It will spring time and it was driving. It was green and it was popping new leaps but then the summer came and I all of a sudden look depressed week So I I have to bring it outdoors. And he's really Into my off my balcony and it's really enjoyed. You know what I do is that I keep it in my balcony for Summer season and in the in the winter season I bring adoptable my attic where it's cold and there's a small window with the lights so I I it Kinda sleeps there during The Monster Death during the winter time and I bring it back into my living room in the spring period and then it pops you leave and then I bring it onto onto the balcony again the in the summertime so it's only for short time indoors during the spring now Okay I see that makes perfect sense. I guess a bit like you might a treat to sit tracinda similar way where near cold but protection from really cold weather. The key is really beautiful. Plant became one of my favorites. But it's so thirsty and he drinks a lot of water so for a period. It was kind of a joke between my friends. That's I could not hang out in the evenings because I had to go home and water my TV. So Really thirsty them interesting. Unique poor a big bucket of water on its it's every single day Or get bigger planter. I guess that's well that's interesting. I guess the the fast growers in the they need lots of moisture ski gun. Tell me a little bit about your your Chinese money. Plants Pilot Pepperoni. Ah Now these have got a bit of a Norwegian connection these good plants for no no agent. How do they do they work? Well I guess they all because they seem very popular. I got several players and they have a long history Norway Anyway So I got a big family and they all came from the same mother And it keeps popping new player. I call them the play. Our babies All the time and it's a perfect gift to also give to to friends and family But as you mentioned it has kind of a Norwegian recent connection to play because Even though the originates from China it was brought to to Norway to Europe by on the weekend missionary that had to flee from China in nineteen forty six around the time And he brought these babies to Norway and he starts Hannington out to friends and family and and all of a sudden this spreads all over Europe so even though it originates from China it had ah Ho spent history for from Norway so and what I see them on Instagram as well as that became kind of a symbol of the new grain vape or or sheets or whatever you call it on on Instagram so again I was Kinda Spreading Green Gospel by by bringing it to Norway. I think think exactly. And what's the what's agents. Call this plot. Is there a common name. We often call it. Because of the Michener Richner Plant Michigan now called in. And and what I what I recommend with this plan because if you have a cold a bedroom and you like to have windows open in the nighttime Pity is a really good clump to choose because It's quite similar to areas. Where it's ridged? It's probably in China. So it's quite a draft tolerance so for me a good bedroom plant as well. Okay Hey yes I do hear from listeners. WHO liked to keep their bedrooms really cold at night I liked him? I bet you as warm as possible bedrooms James really cold and I'm thinking why why it's helps people sleep That's yeah that's just me I wanna go to bed with you know like many hot water autumn's around me as possible. Maybe that's just an English thing. One thing that I hear a lot about pilot pepperonis people saying that the leaves Sir yellowing and dropping off sometimes all of them but sometimes just the ones at the lower down the stem the base of the plant. Is that just a natural thing. The plot does as it gets taller. Or is there any way to keep your plant really bushy and degreen. I've seen your your plants Johnson. They look amazing. So you've obviously got some good Good techniques going on here yeah. The thing is What was what we show me ed the happy but the Pi quite hard I find it quite hardy in the wintertime because it colonel gets more yellow and some of the leaves will Dropped off and so yeah so the player Lehrer I have this one room with the cloud. And then of course quite goods is that I never water it before it. asks for water because when it Oscar water water it will The least will draw more. So that's a good rule because she would not be water too much and it will will tell you when it's time finds water it at least up my experience. I think that's very true. The other thing I hear about that plant is the people have problems with with the leaves kind of funny shapes. And there's lots of theories about why the leaves aren't flat and Pancakey as they should be but it seems to me that the leaves just kind of adapt back to the conditions there in possibly looking for light or adjusting to slightly different levels of humidity. And there's not a lot you can do about that I agree on that. The only thing I experienced with The player where as a window sill plant is that if it's in direct sunlight The leaves curl so that could be also a sign that it's The sunlight too heavy on it. So that's another experience. I go I see I did see the other day. I don't know if this is. This is available no way yet I did see a variegated Piia which is I think. It's CULTIVAR. Name is sugar. The variegation to be honest is not tremendously exciting. It's splashes of silvery what tiny splashes of silvery white but then and if that's reached here yet but that's something to yeah and I never heard of this before I will check it out. Check it out I mean I I I think one of the great qualities of this plant is just the simplicity of those round leaves. So I'm not sure I'm ugly sold on the variegated version but you you know if it's if it exists. I I want to find it and we'll we'll."
