Listen: The Last of Us Part II: Hands-On Impressions
"The mood a little bit about what the event that was like and which which dilapidated coffee shop you got to pretend you're and we're brought to the Hollywood modern warehouse of big big open space with like twelve. TV's in it and so we were brought in we had a brief presentation about the game with some helpful gameplay tips from game wicky expert Neil Druckman and he gives some advice on what we're about to play and then we sat down a few stands you may have seen photos online on my twitter other people's who pretended they had just like a rundown shack over here or restaurants coffee over there nothing that extravagant it was actually pretty low key as an event but they had a few of those stands and then just just a bunch of TV's and they said sit down play the last of us part two and what we played was two levels. I think both are pretty early in the game. They didn't tell US exactly specifics expert. They were not the intro to the game. They were called patrol and then there was a level called suburbs patrol was set in Jackson. Wyoming where Elliott and jeweler living post host last of US one they're living there. The this sequence took place immediately after the three twenty eighteen trailer where we I saw Elliot at the dance with DNA played by Shannon Woodward and the two of them kiss dance and then we see a next day which is basically a patrol day in their life of how they live at this encampment the second part was suburbs which was set in Seattle and Seattle has basically been turned into this militant overrun state by group WWL F. and basically basically if you're not a member of the WF or part of their regime the people that they look over the don't want you in Seattle and they will either take you prisoner or kill you as a result and Elliot's there to rescue some friend who shouldn't be there and that leads to a lot of terrible terrible interactions with terrible scavengers. Now you have an idea of before these are set sort of in the story following the trailer but you have a sense of her. They are sort of in the structure of the game. I think they were both act. One for sure I would say day so there will be some story spoilers throughout talk about I'll try to keep it as light as possible but the second chapter chapter the suburbs bit definitely split apart. They did not happen. Sequentially suburbs ended with that moment withdrawal at the end of the new release date trailer where he's there and keeps Sir safe from scavengers. Why what do you think I'd let you do this alone. That's how that demo ended and I think that's a hell of an act one to me. That felt like a great act one. Here's the end of the story okay. We're GONNA get into something totally different now because to me that implies. Joe Is Not really a big presence in the first third of the game at least you and I love how the tables will tend possibly in the second act. Where Joel is your companion. Yeah we still have this obviously the lingering bombshell from the end of the first game and does that feel like there's a mossy there does that feel like that will get addressed. It definitely does and I got to speak to kneel after as well in the way he described it was like in this game their relationship Asian chip is strained. This'll love each other but the events of the first game definitely impacted them and you know the end of the last US leave some ru open to interpretation of how Elliot took what happened and how much he actually knows. I think Elliot's a smart enough person to know what transpired but he would have figured it out by Nick and especially by now I think she knows it's tough to we'll. We'll try our best to not score that because it is a playstation plus game yes yeah I mean presumably if you're watching stuff about the last part to you played the last of us part one save on suffice to say the ending of the loss of original was very it lift Joel in a very morally gray area. Yes it it is I would say one of the best video I think yeah sure if and and for me that s probably Super Mario Brothers to where it's it's very Ming yeah which is very special and Conquers Bedford yes but yeah this actually has a lot of parallels with Congress Bedford Day but we'll get to that I once oh bed so yeah. It very much felt like these two chapters were in a pretty early on in the game. The first patrol level very much felt like here's how some of the new mechanics work. Here's the basics of combat so that that I would say is probably within the first hour or two after whatever the intro is and then patrols probably a little bit later on from there but Neil and then some of the other team members like they're all. They were very much reiterating this event. What you're seeing is a very small slice of this game like they were. They've been saying this is the the biggest game naughty dog has ever done in terms of scope on a gameplay complexity level on a world level on a story level and so which I'm a little I don't want to say like skeptical about I am a little apprehensive about because I did feel like on charter for awhile it had a ton of excellent stuff did have a little bit of bloat and oversight. Its welcome a little bit. I did appreciate that it allowed you in the story to sort of stop and smell the roses here and there but that game felt needlessly padded at times with a lot of puzzles stuff but that said this has always been a more story driven you know output from that studio so I do have faith that something cool pool come from all that I mean the my favorite seasons of TV. Shows are eight to ten hours. You know I would say that my least favorite shows are the ones that are twenty four hours a season and so so I do hope that there there is a a narrative justification for this being that long I know Gamers do ten a complaint longer with better because because it is a better value for sixty bucks but at the end of the day I do. I want them to have a very strong narrative driven reason to be here for the song that the tone of the last most of us is definitely more suited to a longer game. He does have those quiet moments. It's a sort of stealth game which encourages you to sort of like it's it's kind of it's brooding in its in its totally only much different from uncharted. which is you don't see many like popcorn action movies that are four hours long whereas dramatic prestige television goes on for you know he's take time yeah and the game play perspective? Utah show that Max like we were just chatting before the loss of us is very much it has the beating heart of us have a horror which means that you know instead of plowing through wave away the enemies like you doin'. China full which did grow and by the end like theoretically theoretically every encounter will be very considered like each combat encounter I hadn't we can get into combat and the second is very like brutal and I had to consider every every single opponent that I could run into but on the in terms of game length side. I'm definitely cautiously optimistic because right now we can only go on the eighth of what we've been told but talking to neil he very much like the thing that's the team about. The last of us is it's tension and that that never lets up you do have those quiet moments here and there but like as an overarching story it is constantly propelling you forward and he said that was the goal with this game like this is not a game where there patting out with like here's twenty fund side missions right now like he was like this is a ten game all the way through and we're keeping thing that tone in that pace in the sequel just happens to be larger because of the story necessitated that right it's like. Dina's missing and she's got to go collect ten flowers uh-huh so sorry guys just going to go through this and even said that is an example. He's like there's nothing worse than a game where you're like. Hey I need to save my best friend around but first let me find these five potions for you to go out on patrol look for survivors but also collect one hundred crickets because I want to impress a girl I mean me and Horizon Listen. I was like there's a lot to do but I should get the coffee mugs because I'm a sucker for for stuff like that. the environment speaking of which they feel like there was a little more room to swim around amount or not necessarily swim around 'cause. I couldn't swim in the first game and I saw no swimming swimming swimming. TVD I forgot to ask Neil about swimming. I've said this before she has nothing to do you and she has no school should lynn to swim swim sort it out yet environmentally. It's the approach that they're taking is that like white linear thing that everyone likes to say and as such a marketing term but essentially like it is a game that has forward momentum both on the story and your progression of the world but you'll get to areas that are larger and so kind of like you know like got a tomb raider which I was thinking that we don't actually have a a term for that. You just said why why they call it in the depth side because they hate this thing dibs when you talk to. Dave's because everyone's always angling for is it open well and they they like no. It's not open world but then they have nothing thing to kind of replace it with the finish finish. I think widely is probably I mean. I hate it but it's probably the best description we've got. I understand it. The the structure of the first last of us is very much rooted in last Chen like it. We got this you know. ps four in this generation has brought a ton of open world is almost standard and that that level of sort of of openness player freedom and we saw this with with uncharted forward. There's the big hold like deep area and you know big sprawling areas to explore but it's still a linear story. We almost have to rewind to be like how to talk about how it's how it's structured can talk about that a little bit yes so at least in the portions that I saw it was very much like a as you progressed through that level there are certain points where it closes off the back part of that level progressing through a story beat in the world and and so if you missed you know a couple of pieces of ammo back there or some medication to help like up your skills it's gone"
