The birth rate in the United States remains well below the rates from before the pandemic The birth rate in 2020 was its lowest in nearly 50 years It went up by 1% in 2021 still below pre-pandemic numbers The lead author of a CDC report on births in 2021 says much of the increase was among older mothers and women who postpone pregnancy plans because of the uncertainty surrounding the early days of the pandemic with the largest increase 5% among women in their late 30s There were nearly 3.7 million births last year up about 100,000 from 2020 The rates rose for both Hispanic and white women but fell for Asian black Native American and Alaska native women I'm Tim McGuire
