Listen: NBA, Lani Walker And Spurs discussed on Pull Up with CJ McCollum
"I think they're in a position initiative to turn it around at some point but they have to act fast just as we. Do you know looking at the schedule. Looking at where. We're at twenty two games into the season. We're in ninth place right now. In the Western Conference and have won four lasts five. We have to continue to stay hot in win at home because if you wait too long to try to come back in the western Western Conference you'll you'll find yourself on the outside looking in because there's a lot of depth and a lot of teams who are capable of of getting that seat. Yeah what's interesting with San Antonio. I'm glad glad you hit on on L. A. and and derozen because as good as they've been over their careers both of them have similar games in terms of the mid range and that that one too lineup. Whenever there on the floor together has been about a negative seven net rating which is really surprising? Considering you know how effective active they've been but the the NBA is we know every year shift more and more toward perimeter place spacing. And I just wonder like how much more they can dan chains given the DNA of that team. I love Lani Walker. I think he's really talented. He was terrific. He basically now that he's playing you you can see how he infuses a different type of athleticism and Creativity to them. But is it just a the roster itself because they don't shoot a lot of threes make a lot of threes In because defensively. Cj they're not very good I I guess I'm I just wonder like what what's the upside for them. Like how much better can they get. Do they need to make a move Giving that their two best players are very much based in the mid range and both of them have actually maintained very good. True shooting percentage manages. Both ALTURAS and Rosen. which to me is even scarier? Because they're still not a very good offense. I think they definitely can improve in terms of health right now. I think that's played. Eight a factor. LA's been injured. Hasn't played the last few games. I think there's a contract dispute you going on between the rows in Spurs. I think there was talks about an extension extension. They're going through the negotiation process. Obviously he's due for an extension if he wants one and they have been giving him that so I think that's one of the trade whispers kind of started trying to figure out is is he a long-term fixture there or do they move him for for other acids rumors about him go onto the raptors and things of that nature so it's yet to be determined what they're going to do in terms of trying to blow it up and start from scratch and play young guys in find assets or trying to make their push for the playoffs nick. They're caught at a cross road in kind of in between but they definitely have the talent to turn around with what they have. They just have to figure out rotations grouse spacing. How much do you play a guy like Lani Walker? Would you do in our guy like Marco Belletti. Nellie really you've got rudy gay. You have some pieces here. Who have played in the playoffs who have been elite for a long time? So it's just about figuring out how turn this thing around but I think like you said before. They have to figure out the future of the franchise. DO THEY WANNA do they WANNA kinda start from scratch or do they want to make that play. Push and if that's what they want to do in terms of making that playoff push they have to get their rotation in order to figure out the spacing and try to get back to playing spurs basketball running the wedge running San Antonio Weeks Antonio strong some of that flow offense to where it expires in a pick and roll and you have gray spacing on the backside but if they don't I look to see them make some trades Around mid commit to late January just wonder tier point. See about like how long it can go on where it gets to the point where it's not salvageable It's still early enough. They can absolutely try to fix this. But you know you're you talked about. They have a lot of guards and You know we haven't really seen a Lotta Lani Walker. Because he's been out but now that he is in there you see he needs minutes Pearls been very good But there just doesn't seem to be the identity of of the Spurs that we've known for so long they blown a lot of leads I just wonder like I guess you're you're you're you made the point of just you know waiting a another month or two to see if they can fix it but you know at some point you just have to say okay. Well this is not this is not the season we don't have the personnel and we have to start thinking about the future. Sure so spurs fans. I know you've been very spoiled by a lot of success and They certainly have treated you two championships. This is unfortunately for a lot of teams life life in the NBA. Finding that try not to be the middle ground of like not a contender but now rebuilding. It's very very difficult and The NBA right now is You know it's a top heavy league so there's a line there's a lot of teams there's a lot of really bad teams right now. This is why I think why we're seeing so much scoring by the way we haven't talked about the scoring scoring or exotic control. Cj these one forty one fifty games one thirty eight points at halftime. It's crazy. I know you like it but I think it's nuts. It's a combination Asian of a lot of things though people will talk about the defense or how the game is evolving. But I think jet to understand. Is that a lot of guys in the NBA or essentially unguardable. You have a a lot of players where you can play good defense just better offense the spacing. They know how to manipulate pick and roll guys that know how to draw. Thous- makes it extremely hard it to guard certain types of players in this league with how fast the game goes. You've got guys who can shoot from thirty feet out off the dribble and catch and shoot so the spacing. The dynamics of the game are changing. Obviously you would like to see more defense being performed. But it's a credit to a Lotta guys who've worked on their talent who improved. The pace is something that is changing the game. You know historically compared to where the pace was that in years past there's more possessions if there's more possessions more opportunities to score chances are you're going to score more points so there's a lot of things that are factoring factoring into why the scores are outrageous. You look at a team like the Washington Wizards. They're great offensively. Bradley bills getting out running. He's Avin Basically thirty points a game. He's efficient. They got wings that can score. They got the Thomas they got big second shoe and I think you look at a lot of teams now to where therefore they're fours and fives. I have three point range and you have four. That can shoot. Three's the spacing dynamic changes completely and I think that's why you're seeing you know some of these outrageous scores scores although we're only give it up like only like one hundred and fourteen points which is which is top ten in the NBA in terms of points given up."
