Listen: A new era begins for the Boy Scouts of America
"There's an interesting story. That's been unfolding. I want to say for the last couple of years where the boy scouts of America changed their name their now known as BSA, right? And they're inviting girls to be part of the BSA the boy scouts, and we have girls from Livingston county as the first female scouts to join the B S A troop, I've got some questions about this particular story and checking in on our phone line. Now, the scoutmaster of this troop three ten in Pinkney, Michigan Heather Hudson. Now Pinkney is known for cheese to be sure as we stopped going up north on the I seventy five to get some. But now you kind of made news being the first. Scouts BSA with girls in it. Give us a little bit of the background as to how this unfolded, and what kind of impact it's having up there. And to those who are members of the troupe. Well warrant. Things are kind of exciting here in picky. We're all really excited about the new true. And I am hurt or assistant scout master with troops three twelve. Which is our linked true. So. A couple of different models. There's a all-girl troupe or you can have a link to which is the way we're doing things. So we have our three twelve which is all blade troop. And we have a troop three ten which is the all girl. True. We share a committee and are chartered organizational breath as well as yes assistant scout masters and all the troops trailer and all the gear. So for us troop three twelve it was an easy transition to make the decision. Start the girl. True. We had many. Well, there's girls right now and of them they've all had siblings. Either in a boy scout troop right or in our troop, specifically three twelve and they were watching what their brothers were doing things are. Well, the things they were doing and the places they were going, and they decided that they wanted to be a part of that. When the question I have and keep in mind, I'm the father of four daughters. But why wouldn't they want to be? And I know you were involved in scouting with your sons, but why wouldn't the girls wanna be in girl? Scouts. What is it about? The boy scouts are. Now BSA that they want to be part of. Well, like, I just said. These girls have been watching her brothers were doing right and the do the scouts BSA program. And maybe these girls are also in girl scouts and yet. They have also chosen part of the scouts BSA program. So it's really no different than them to saying they want to be part of a basketball team or volleyball team some of them on the swim team. It's all about choices and what they wanna do. And so some of the things that we've been doing and that your all the girls receive a nice from our the Lynch through twelve so we've gone over nice safety. How to whip infused rope. How to certifier safely? These are all things that the girls wanted to do. And they've been doing them in our meetings made them working at meal plan going Campo to do the shopping. So there. Campout just a really great program. And unfortunately, I don't know. What the girl scout program has to offer because I'm not part of that program, and I just know all the wonderful benefits at the scouts BSA program has to offer the one thing I saw suggested that the only thing for example, girl scouts couldn't. Get is a what was it? They kind of a leadership role and become what does that special thing in in the boy scouts were. They could become the eagle scouts go right there. That was the only thing I thought that girls couldn't achieve is be getting that eagle scout. Does have a gold award. And we in the boy scouts has the eagle scout award. And so now the girls that join starting your first in two thousand eighteen will have that opportunity to get the eagle scout award as well. Let me I was looking back and and recalling a story that I saw on good Morning America was two years ago when the boy scouts of America decided they were gonna change their name to BSA, and that they were thinking about having girls joined the BSA, and this was the breaking story. And I just and I know you mentioned, you know, a lot about the girl scouts, but listen to the breaking story that good Morning America ran about two years ago when this announcement came out, but leaders of the girl scouts are outraged in a strongly worded statement, they condemn the boy scouts move to include girls, telling ABC news the boy scouts. House is on fire instead of addressing systemic issues of continuous sexual assault, financial mismanagement and deficient programming. BSA senior management wants to add an accelerated to the house fire by recruiting girls. Girl scouts generate half of their annual revenue needs through those famous cookies selling two hundred million boxes a year, which generate almost a billion dollars in sales. No word if the scouts will attempt their own cookie franchise now, what what did you make a necessary thing that was like a two two years or so ago have there because obviously everybody was not on board on this decision for girls to join the boy scouts or the BSA. Oh, go ahead. No, you go ahead. Okay. It's interesting. You know, hearing that I just know what the scouts USA has to offer. And you know, I'm proud to say, it's a wonderful program. And that that's something that these girls have chosen to do. And you know, and I I don't really understand why everybody wants to, you know, make decisions for other people or tell these young ladies and their parents, what's right for them. Or what's not right for them. Or, you know, what type of program they want to be part of all I know is the scouts BSA, you know, once women and young men to join scouts BSA. And they're also, you know, backing them in any choices that they make join any type of program that they would like to join. So I don't really pay much attention to the media because a lot of attacked skewed one way or the other all I know is our cheap is really happy the parents and pick me you're really happy and everybody's proud of their sons and daughters, and it's gonna be a great achievement. When these girls reach the"
