Listen: Hurricane Florence, Hurricane Hugo, Hurricane Hazel discussed on AM Tampa Bay
"Hurricane Florence. And they say it could rival the biggest storm they ever had like the story said the last time the mid section of the east coast stared down a hurricane like this. Dwight Eisenhower was in the White House and Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio were newlyweds, but hurricane Florence. It's the worst. It's been seen in more than sixty years with rain and wind of more than a hundred thirty miles an hour and predicting some places could get forty five inches of rain. Yep. Because they're saying it'll probably stall when it comes on shore and just continue to pound North Carolina and South Carolina with rain, particularly North Carolina. They've been hit with only one other category. Four storm since the record keeping began back in the eighteen fifties. And that was hurricane Hazel in nineteen fifty four. And again that was when I was president and hurricane Hugo member. Hurricane Hugo made landfall in South Carolina as a category four hurricane back in nineteen eighty nine. And the interesting thing is in comparison, Florida, which is closer to the equator. Where storms normally occur and in line with a part of the Atlantic where the hurricanes are actually born off the coast of Africa. In Florida, we've had at least five hurricanes in the past century of category. Four or greater including Andrew big one in nineteen Ninety-two, but we've only had five in the past hundred years of category four or more. And that gives you an idea of how serious this storm is going to be that's going to be attacking the east coast of the United States can mess up my weekend. Well, there's only one and he's got a house theory actually, still lives back in our hometown, Logan, West Virginia, but we're all gonna get together at his I don't know if it's his winter home or what it is. But it's in a town called Milledgeville, which is near Atlanta. But we've pretty much backed out of it. Because a couple of the people were going to be driving from up north, and obviously they can't drive down through that. And so I think it's being called off. So I don't know what I'm doing this weekend. We'll party together. We'll have our hurricane part of here. I feel for anyone up there because we know a year ago exactly dealing with Irma having to go through the pain of shuddering, your homes getting everything in place, deciding do you want to evacuate? Do you wanna stay and hunker down? Here was the term we always use. It's a tough call and my wife still looking at me a scant because I'm messing around going from place to place trying to find out where we're going to do hurricane coverage while she's all alone at home trying to take care of the place. Anyway, it's fifteen minutes after five on AM Tampa Bay. And let's go to the storm teammate weather center in meteorologists Lee span and leave for us. I guess the heat continues. Yeah. Near record highs today. I mean ninety three this afternoon record highs ninety four so the the record high isn't that high? But the fact that we're still in the low nineties this late into the summer. I mean, yeah, we're kind of expecting it to start to cool down. And are just not seeing that anytime in the short term. What are the reasons as we won't see storms until after we've already hit ninety three. We usually rely on this norms to kind of cool this down. So we'll hit ninety three before the thirty percent. Rain chance really starts can't imagine. We're hoping for storms. Yeah. Sometimes you just wish you get a little cool break. Boy, that's truth. Well, come November. We will. I think it's sixteen minutes after five and let's get to the newsroom, and Chris Trink men more than a million people on the south eastern seaboard or being ordered to evacuate as hurricane Florence marches towards the Carolinas and Virginia the massive category.
