Listen: This NYT bestseller has penned his most frightening novel to date
"Us. Now. Zirk our friend, the number one bestselling author in my opinion. Probably the best suspense novelist out there. James rollins. Jeez. Welcome back to the show forever. For having me again. Appreciate it. Yeah. Yeah. Well, great to have you on board and congratulations on the latest. The demon crown appreciate that of the street this debut. Yeah. Absolutely. We'll tell us a little bit about the book, and maybe how it fits into the rest of the cessation of sigma for series. And maybe how they're some departures in some new thrills in their. Sure. Well, this story is number thirteen in the series. Not that you have to read them in any order. No one's read my books in in the proper order. I wish they would. But they don't just totally fine. But in this book, and to quote, my editor she describes it as my most frightening book to date, and I'm not about to argue with her. I think it is one of the curious look I've ever written. But basically the story starts out when a group of scientists they travel to an island off the coast of Brazil, and they discover that all life on the island has been radicchio. It's gone. It's been consumed by species that's beyond imagination freaks them out before they report their discovery, the scientists all attacked and killed, but this one events blows up until into a global threat when the same species that was on the island. Unleashed as a weapon across the Hawaiian islands. And as people begin to die one hundred sit appears to to stop this from even spreading globally as the nuke those islands. But of course, my team of heroes sigma forces called in Detroit. Discover the origin of the species where came from and find a way to destroy it. But the species is still stubborn little guy. It's changing spreading surviving every time. Stop it. And what's sort of frightening about this book, and I'm sort of hedging myself a little bit by not revealing what that threat exactly is. It's one of the threats that homeland security is classified as prime danger against the US, I suppose for the seat for this novel was I had read this list of concerns of homeland security has for the United States in surprised to see this threat raised in the basically the biological threat. And it's one that concerns homeland security enough that I decided to write a book about it. Yeah. That's fascinating. So it's it's still good novel before Christmas, right? No, it takes place in Hawaii. So it's like a little Hawaiian vacation for readers. So it's perfectly time for Christmas. So that you want that little winter holiday, the little beach vacation. Of course this venture. You're not gonna get a little rest and relaxation during this trip. But hopefully, it will if nothing else entertained there you go. Yeah. I was getting a a love seeing the islands. Love seeing the different locations. You go to I was worried because why is obviously go along with everybody else when my all time favorite places. So I gotta make sure Hawaii stays in place. So glad force was on the scene. That's good. Tilson a little bit about maybe some of the characters that were familiar with from the the the past series as well as maybe some new characters in what they bring to the table. Sure, we'll sigma foresaw there for those that aren't familiar there. A group of special forces soldiers that were drummed out of the service for various reasons, but because it's such a aptitudes or skills or intelligence they recruited in secret by DARPA, which is the defense department department's defense and research and development wing, he answered it. They're basically retraining secret to be field agents for DARPA to protect the our shores and very short against I global threats so in this the usual team comes up to bat. But of course, they need to recruit a few extra skilled individuals to help them in this case, we find a Hawaiian firemen that sort of stumbled upon this adventure along with the members of sigma force that are called into play, and he gets sort of semi recruited. So he's funny sort of almost a comic relief character in the book a little bit. And we also have a Tamala just to sum that team C N demolished that works for the national zoo that is called in to explore this new threat. And of course, got the usual cast of characters there's commander Grayson pierces, the leader of the team he's along with his usual cast of characters sigma force and is a little bit of a little extra surprise for gray. In the fact that he finds out that his girlfriend maybe pregnant, but more than that. Major element to the story ovoid. Another twist turn. So let me envisioning you in your say at your office. We'll see it's a deep dungeon or your tree treehouse retreat. Whatever may be, but you're sitting there in your thinking about okay, I've got the series and it's thirteenth in the series. So I knew I have to bring back some of the characters that people are going to be familiar with wise. My fan base will kill me. So to do that. How do you go about planning the the whole plot in this scenario the locations in what the teams going to be doing this time compared to what they did last time. But what are they mission? I resisted doing series. I didn't wanna do a series. All my for stories. We're all individual adventures. It was only pond some pressure from my publishing house that I finally broke down and wrote a series because I had to call the Jessica Fletcher syndrome, you all seem. Fletcher. Cross dead bodies every week. I've never ever stumbled over a dead body. So I always had that sort of problem with serious characters. Why is that one series curated always getting into mischief unless of course, lasts revelations last episode of murder? She wrote that she was a serial killer. She's been framing everybody'll Paul along. Don't make sense. Resisted doing this series because of that problem. But if I make a furious based on a group rather than an individual that can have a little more fun for"
