Listen: President Trump, President And Robert Muller discussed on KCBS Radio Afternoon News
"Time five twenty one busy afternoon in the KCBS news for we have been getting one revelation after another today with the release of documents related to the Russia probe our own Doug sovereign has been following it all we'll pouty and Jeff special counsel Robert Muller's now saying that former Trump campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, lied about five major issues after agreeing to cooperate with prosecutors, and they're also accusing prosecutors are also calling for a stiff sentence for Trump's former attorney Michael Cohen and making a significant statement, we think about President Trump's involvement in all of this for more on what we learned this afternoon. It all could mean we're joined on the KCBS ring central Newsline by Rory little professor at the college of the law. Former federal prosecutor supreme court clerk, thanks again for being with us Rory. And I want to ask you, you know, buried in in the sentencing memo for for Michael Cohen is this line where they just state as fact that his criminal payments to stormy Daniels and another woman were coordinated with and directed by Donald Trump. What what what do you make of that? I think the Coen memo turns out to be more damaging east today. You know, they don't name Donald Trump. Right. They call them individual one. And so I'm not sure that the president actually understand it. He's individual number one. But that's not a vindication now Cullens credibility is going to be attacked pretty severely, and he certainly has an unpleasant background in that regard. But that memo seems to be more damaging the Manafort memo, which is. Filed later today. Has a lot more redacted information and says a lot less specific about what it is. It Manafort may have been involved in no does say says individual one, but elsewhere in the memo says individual one who went on to be elected, president of the United States. So it's pretty clear lowers the odds through that might be right. And the president has tweeted totally clears the president. Thank you very much. Not the way you see it. Yeah. No his response. You know, there's gonna be a battle ideologically about the these memos in about the Muller reported. Some other report ever comes out at one side is gonna see it as sort of damning indictment, and the other side is going to say it is indication that there was no collusion. And so there's no problem. But this is a serious accusation of felony conduct. This is when President Trump was a candidate reimbursing these women, but but he's denied any involvement. So it's just a credibility fight between the two of them on on this particular point in terms of the linkage to individual one, which again, we can agree is is President Trump that is not necessarily suggest that the special prosecutor plans to go after Mr. Trump directly, correct? Right. I mean, this is this is not filed by Muller. This is filed by the southern district of New York. The US attorney up there who who by the way is as an appointee of President Trump, and they're not naming him because there is a policy of not charging a sitting president, no matter what your evidence may be. So this will all just be more fodder for the house of representatives, which will swing to the Democrats starting on January? So what comes next? Well, that's a good question. You know, she's always be on a Friday afternoon. But you know, they're sentencings to be done. So Cohen, we'll be sentenced at some point next week Manafort, we'll be sentenced the judge in the Manafort case may ask for further hearings on these allegations of of what amount to additional felonies lying under oath by Manafort or lying to federal law enforcement officials, which is a felony. And and there's lots of other things floating around there other people who've been alleged to be cooperating to be about to be indicted, and we have a new nominee for Torney general. So I mean, you know, the believe me we'll be busy through the holidays. We certainly will. Thank you ROY little UCA's things law and again, Michael Kohn supposed to be sentenced in New York next Wednesday live in the news center. Doug sovereign. Alright.
